VIII. MAIN BODY:

Exodus 10:27 (King James Version)

But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go.

A. The LORD can change hearts

"But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart,"

After the word "hardened" comes the signature of ALEPH-TAV, the BEGINNING and the END, the FIRST and the LAST. It's placed in between the words of "hardened" and "Pharaoh". No doubt about it, only the LORD can harden or soften a man's heart.

Proverbs 21:1 (King James Version)

The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

Proverbs 21:1 (Amplified Bible)

THE KING’S heart is in the hand of the Lord, as are the watercourses; He turns it whichever way He wills.

The LORD is in the business of changing heart towards Him, the people around us and towards any circumstances or situation.

Hardened or "chazaq" in Hebrew means:

1. to fasten upon

2. be strong (courageous, strengthen, cure, help, repair, fortify)

3. to bind, restrain, conquer

We see the fourth definition of hardened or "chazaq" that leads us to the conclusion that if Pharaoh's heart will continue to be hardened, it is to bind, restrain and conquer his heart. The LORD aims for the heart for the person's heart to be changed toward Him, but Pharaoh missed GOD's goodness and therefore he's easy prey to be bound, to be restrained like an animal and to be conquered by the LORD.

Purpose of hardening the heart of Pharaoh:

1. That the LORD might display His signs and wonders (the 10 plagues) before Pharaoh.

Exodus 10:1 (Amplified Bible)

THE LORD said to Moses, Go to Pharaoh, for I have made his heart hard, and his servants’ hearts, that I might show these My signs [of divine power] before him,

Exodus 3:19-20 (Amplified Bible)

And I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go [unless forced to do so], no, not by a mighty hand.

So I will stretch out My hand and smite Egypt with all My wonders which I will do in it; and after that he will let you go.

2. To lay the LORD's hand against Egypt

Exodus 7:4 (Amplified Bible)

But Pharaoh will not listen to you, and I will lay My hand upon Egypt and bring forth My hosts, My people the Israelites, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment.

The LORD's purpose is for the Pharaoh's destruction for he persecuted the people of GOD: the Jews. This is how GOD treats the scoffers and mockers like Pharaoh.

Jeremiah 44:27 (Amplified Bible)

Behold, I am watching over them for evil and not for good; and all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by famine until there is an end of them and they are all destroyed.

Exodus 14:17 (Amplified Bible)

And I, behold, I will harden (make stubborn and strong) the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall go [into the sea] after them; and I will gain honor over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and horsemen.

3. To give the people of GOD favor and respect in the sight of the Egyptians

Exodus 3:21 (Amplified Bible)

And I will give this people favor and respect in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be that when you go, you shall not go empty-handed.

4. That the LORD's name might be declared throughout all the earth

Exodus 9:16 (Amplified Bible)

But for this very purpose have I let you live, that I might show you My power, and that My name may be declared throughout all the earth.

Romans 9:17-24 (Amplified Bible)

For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, I have raised you up for this very purpose of displaying My power in [dealing with] you, so that My name may be proclaimed the whole world over.

So then He has mercy on whomever He wills (chooses) and He hardens (makes stubborn and unyielding the heart of) whomever He wills.

You will say to me, Why then does He still find fault and blame us [for sinning]? For who can resist and withstand His will?

But who are you, a mere man, to criticize and contradict and answer back to God? Will what is formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus?

Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same mass (lump) one vessel for beauty and distinction and honorable use, and another for menial or ignoble and dishonorable use?

What if God, although fully intending to show [the awfulness of] His wrath and to make known His power and authority, has tolerated with much patience the vessels (objects) of [His] anger which are ripe for destruction?

And [what if] He thus purposes to make known and show the wealth of His glory in [dealing with] the vessels (objects) of His mercy which He has prepared beforehand for glory,

Even including ourselves whom He has called, not only from among the Jews but also from among the Gentiles (heathen)?

5. For the LORD to gain honor and glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.

Exodus 14:18 (Amplified Bible)

The Egyptians shall know and realize that I am the Lord when I have gained honor and glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.

B. The LORD can make you do things that seemingly you want but it's His plan

"and he would not let them go"

Isaiah 55:9 (Amplified Bible)

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

The LORD GOD's promise is in effect in the life of Pharaoh then, and still in effect until now. If you mess up with GOD's people, GOD will mess you up.

Exodus 23:22 (Amplified Bible)

But if you will indeed listen to and obey His voice and all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

Genesis 12:3 (Amplified Bible)

And I will bless those who bless you [who confer prosperity or happiness upon you] and curse him who curses or uses insolent language toward you; in you will all the families and kindred of the earth be blessed [and by you they will bless themselves].

If unbelievers and skeptics of the bible can see a "merciless", "killing-machine" GOD, on the contrary, I can see a peaceful, loving GOD, because the LORD have given the Egyptians and Pharaoh 10 chances to repent.

Revelation 9:20 (Amplified Bible)

And the rest of humanity who were not killed by these plagues even then did not repent of [the worship of] the works of their [own] hands, so as to cease paying homage to the demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor move.

In spite of these that the LORD knows the future from eternity past, already know that Pharaoh and the Egpytians will never repent of what they've done to Israelites.

2 Corinthians 7:10 (Amplified Bible)

For godly grief and the pain God is permitted to direct, produce a repentance that leads and contributes to salvation and deliverance from evil, and it never brings regret; but worldly grief (the hopeless sorrow that is characteristic of the pagan world) is deadly [breeding and ending in death].

Romans 2:4 (Amplified Bible)

Or are you [so blind as to] trifle with and presume upon and despise and underestimate the wealth of His kindness and forbearance and long-suffering patience? Are you unmindful or actually ignorant [of the fact] that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repent (to change your mind and inner man to accept God’s will)?

How many times Pharaoh spoke in hypocrisy?

1 Timothy 4:2 (Amplified Bible)

Through the hypocrisy and pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared (cauterized),

Actually 10 times after every plague has been removed from him, Pharaoh will speak lies to Moses and Aaron, here's the tenth as a sample.

Exodus 10:28 (Amplified Bible)

And Pharaoh said to Moses, Get away from me! See that you never enter my presence again, for the day you see my face again you shall die!

Pharaoh's heart or mind never calculated or known that he will not win over the LORD.

Proverbs 21:30 (Amplified Bible)

There is no [human] wisdom or understanding or counsel [that can prevail] against the Lord.

IX. CONCLUSION:

Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for a heart and mind that can be renewed by Your WORD.
