INTRODUCTION
• SLIDE #1
• We all face seasons of chaos and turmoil in life. There are times when we live life on the edge and we desperately seek rest and peace.
• There are times when there is a stirring in the depths of our soul, yet the frustrating part is that we cannot put a finger on why our soul is being stirred.
• We know something is not quite right, yet we do not know what it is.
• We know the outside pressures of life are affecting our inner peace, yet we do not know what to do to correct the issue.
• This brings us to Psalm 62. Psalm 62 was attributed to David.
• David was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), yet his life was very chaotic. David had many self-inflicted wounds, yet he had the wherewithal to understand the longing of his soul.
• David writes Psalm 62 during the rebellion of his son Absalom. Absalom was seeking to kill David, David had to flee for his life while his son flaunted his rebellion for all of Jerusalem to see.
• David has a lot of outside noise going on in his life at this time.
• It is under these circumstances that David was inspired to write the 62nd Psalm.
• I believe, particularly for those who are Christians, that our soul is possibly waiting for us to do some things.
• Today we will open the curtain to Psalm 62 as we examine what our soul is waiting for.
• Let’s begin with verse 5.
• SLIDE #2
• Psalm 62:5 (HCSB) Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from Him.

My soul us waiting for me to…
I. Find my rest in God. (5)
• We can all imagine the noise of life and how it can drown out our peace. He can all relate to the bad feeling at the pit of our stomach when the noise of life gets too loud.
• Imagine the position David is in, his son has taken over the throne and is actively seeking to kill David.
• In verse 1, which we are not covering today, David realizes that even in the midst of the difficulties that have beset him, that he finds his rest in God alone!
• He speaks in verse 1 of how his salvation comes from God, therefore he can be at rest in God.
• Now as we drop down to verse five, which we are now examining, we see that David offers another reason for resting in God.
• Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from Him.
• In verses 1 and 5, when David speaks of REST, he speaks of the fact that he is able to rest because of his conviction that God is sufficient.
• How many sleepless nights have you had because something was weighing on your soul?
• You were asleep but you never were able to rest because the noise of life was simply too loud for you to be able to tune it out and relax.
• David, in the midst of life screaming at him, was able to rest in God because he knew that God was sufficient! David’s confidence lies ultimately in God.
• In verse five, David tells us his HOPE comes from God.
• His hope is built on the underlying faith his has in God to defend and protect him.
• When we find our rest in God, life is good!
• Hebrew word for HOPE denotes an eager waiting upon God that looked forward to his intervention.
• SLIDE #4
• Philippians 4:6–7 (HCSB) Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
• Until you are able to let go and let God have it, you will struggle with finding rest.
• Just maybe you are not able to enjoy peace and rest because your soul is telling you to find your rest in God.
• Take another look at the Philippians passage on the screen, wouldn’t you like to enjoy the peace that surpasses all thought and understanding?
• Let’s look at verses 6-7.
• SLIDE #5
• Psalm 62:6–7 (HCSB) — 6 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken. 7 My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock. My refuge is in God.
• SLIDE #6

II. Make God the mainstay of my life. (6-7)
• David is able to allow his soul to find peace in God because he was able to make God the mainstay of his life!
• A MAINSTAY is a thing on which something else is based or depends on.
• Look back at verse 6 where David describes how God is his ROCK, his SALVATION, his STRONGHOLD.
• Our natural tendency would be to act impulsively, taking these matters into our own hands. David understood that God alone was his rock, salvation, and fortress, the one who could protect and defend him.
• God was his sole deliverance. God alone would uphold his honor.
• God was David’s rock, in the center of the storms of life, David could anchor his life to God.
• Some many times the noise level of life disorients us in such a manner that we cannot find our rock and we then float out to be lost at sea.
• When God is your rock, your foundation will be strong.
• Jesus uses this same though pattern in Matthew 7 when he speaks of the one who builds his house on the sand versus building on the rock.
• SLIDE #7
• Matthew 7:24 (HCSB) — 24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock.
• Jesus equates building on the ROCK with carrying out His words in one’s life.
• God was David’s salvation. David knew even if Absalom killed him, God was his salvation.
• A stronghold is an impenetrable fortress! What is your stronghold in life? Where do you go when you are in need of protection and security?
• SLIDE #8
• Matthew 6:19–20 (HCSB) “Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal.
• If you are placing your trust and security in the world, you will be disappointed one day.
• David said he will not be shaken! His foundation is strong and he could withstand the storms of life with his relationship with God intact!
• These verses are a call to acknowledge my dependence on God.
• Maybe your soul is restless because is it waiting for you to anchor to the rock of Jesus Christ?
• Let’s look at verse 8.
• SLIDE #9
• Psalm 62:8 (HCSB) Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.
• SLIDE #10
My soul us waiting for me to…
III. Fully trust my life with God. (8)
• For one to be able to ANCHOR their life to God, they have to first trust Him.
• In verse 8, David urges people to trust God at ALL TIMES!
• The noise level of life and block out the still small voice of God, we can forget He is calling us to trust Him all the time.
• Here David is being pursued by his son, yet the high level of noise around David does not cause him to tune out God.
• In verse 8 David uses an interesting phrase in the Hebrew. It is translated POUR OUT.
• Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.
• The PHRASE POUR OUT is a Hebrew term that denotes the complete pouring out of a liquid from a container until there is NO reserve left, nothing is held back.
• Now in the context of trust, isn’t that what real trust Is built upon, the ability to hold nothing back, the ability to pour everything you have into the object of your trust?
• For those of you who have sky dived, or as I put it, have a fascination with a crash and burn death!
• What level of trust MUST you have in your equipment before you jump out of that perfectly good airplane?
• 10%? 20%? 30%? 40%? 80%?
• I think when you jump out of that plane, you are placing 100% faith in the fact that chute is going to deploy! By the fact you are jumping means you are holding nothing back.
• If you cannot FULLY invest yourself in your spouse, your relationship will suffer.
• If you hold back with God, your soul will be begging you not to do that!
• In Matthew 6:33 Jesus reminds us that we are to seek first His kingdom if we want God’s provision.
• In Luke 16:13 Jesus tells us we CANNOT serve two masters.
• This is a call to find stillness in relation to God. David is urging people to have a CALM TRUST in God.
• With God, make sure you have no PLAN B! It is God or nothing!
• Maybe your soul is disturbed because it is waiting for you to fully trust in the Lord?
• Let’s look at verses 9-12
• SLIDE #11
• Psalm 62:9–12 (HCSB) — 9 Men are only a vapor; exalted men, an illusion. Weighed in the scales, they go up; together they are less than a vapor. 10 Place no trust in oppression, or false hope in robbery. If wealth increases, pay no attention to it. 11 God has spoken once; I have heard this twice: strength belongs to God, 12 and faithful love belongs to You, Lord. For You repay each according to his works.

IV. Realize that nothing compares to God. (9-12)
• For one to be able to completely trust God, one must understand that NOTHING COMPARES TO GOD.
• Human relationships are like this. In High School, many dating relationships work this way. I love them, there is NO other for me, UNTIL THE HOTTER ONE WALKS BY!
• In marriage you will NEVER go astray if you realize NOTHING compares to your spouse. If you are continually comparing your spouse with others, you will eventually get into trouble.
• You will never fully commit to your spouse.
• It works the same way with God, if you think there are other things better than God, you will never fully commit to Him.
• Without hammer this nail too long, David in verse 9 basically says you cannot put your trust in man, mankind is temporary on this earth.
• Humans are compared to a vapor in verse 9.
• The idea of weighing a vapor on the scales of that day was crazy. Even the most famous or the best of us is nothing but a vapor who in comparison to God, is a vapor!
• Verse 10 speaks of the folly of trusting in wealth.
• Once we realize that trusting in anything other than God is futile, we will be able to fully trust Him!
• Maybe your soul is waiting for you to acknowledge that is the only way!
CONCLUSION
• What is keeping your soul in a state of disarray? Maybe it is waiting for some things to change in your life.
• The peace that surpasses all understanding in found in a relationship with Jesus Christ!
• Your soul can find rest in Him!
• Next week we will examine how we can carry out a relationship with Jesus in our message “Follow Me.”
