I. EXORDIUM:
Do you keep and do GOD's WORDS?
Yes. Do what you know from the WORD. But first priority is know the WORD so you can apply it. James 1:22
James 1:22
But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believers
III. OBJECTIVES:
To show that even the mother of JESUS in the flesh is not a doer of the WORD.
IV. TEXT:
Luke 2:19
But Mary was keeping within herself all these things (sayings), weighing and pondering them in her heart.
V. THESIS:
Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for in and through You, we keep Your WORD to remember it and apply it in our daily lives, and our minds are renewed by Your WORDS.
Hebrews 12:2
Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].
VI. TITLE:
Mary remembers but cannot renew mind
VII. EXPLICATION:
A. Author: Dr. Luke, The Beloved Physician (close friend and traveling companion of Paul)
B. Audience: Theophilus (Greek means friend of GOD, a Christian)
C. Purpose: To give a connected and orderly narrative of the life of CHRIST as seen by eyewitnesses
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. Mary can remember
"But Mary was keeping within herself all these things (sayings),"
Kept or "suntereo" in Greek meaning:
1. to keep closely together
2. to conserve
3. mentally to remember (and obey)
4. keep, observe, preserve
Illustration: Like the new wine is kept on new bottles, both are preserved (KEPT). New testament methodologies need to be kept in the New Testament. We can't keep old testament ways of worship in the New Testament.
Matthew 9:17
Neither is new wine put in old wineskins; for if it is, the skins burst and are torn in pieces, and the wine is spilled and the skins are ruined. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.
Luke 5:38-39
But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
And no one after drinking old wine immediately desires new wine, for he says, The old is good or better.
Illustration: Old dogs can't learn new tricks. It's the same with believers who keep on holding to their own old traditions. That's why we are highly advised by GOD's WORDS to always re-NEW our minds.
Mary does the right thing in keeping GOD's WORDS in her heart, but she ended there. She never did it, she never applied it.
The LORD JESUS said in front of many people that His mother and brothers does not listen to His WORDS to obey it.
Luke 8:20-21
And it was told Him, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to have an interview with You.
But He answered them, My mother and My brothers are those who listen to the Word of God and do it!
John 7:5
For [even] His brothers did not believe in or adhere to or trust in or rely on Him either.
Matthew 13:55-58
Is not this the carpenter’s Son? Is not His mother called Mary? And are not His brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
And do not all His sisters live here among us? Where then did this Man get all this?
And they took offense at Him [they were repelled and hindered from acknowledging His authority, and caused to stumble]. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.
And He did not do many works of power there, because of their unbelief (their lack of faith in the divine mission of Jesus).
B. But she can't renew her heart
"weighing and pondering them in her heart"
weighing, pondering, pondered or "sumballo" in Greek meaning:
1. to combine
2. to converse, consult, dispute, (mentally) to consider
3. to aid, (personally) to join, attack: - confer, encounter, help, make, meet with, ponder
But pondering can't get you nowhere. The Bible clearly states and commanded us not to just ponder on GOD's WORDS but to renew our minds with it.
Ponder - to weigh in the mind; to consider and compare the circumstances or consequences of an event, or the importance of the reasons for or against a decision. To view with deliberation; to examine.
People in the bible that pondered but were never changed:
1. High priests, military commander and Sadducees - they pondered about JESUS but still they put in prison Peter and John, servants of the LORD JESUS.
Acts 4:1
AND WHILE they [Peter and John] were talking to the people, the high priests and the military commander of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
Acts 4:15
But having ordered [the prisoners] to go aside out of the council [chamber], they conferred (debated) among themselves,
2. Epicurean and Stoic philosophers - they "pondered" on Paul's preaching but still they worshipped idols.
Acts 17:18-23
And some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him and began to engage in discussion. And some said, What is this babbler with his scrap-heap learning trying to say? Others said, He seems to be an announcer of foreign deities—because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.
And they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus [Mars Hill meeting place], saying, May we know what this novel (unheard of and unprecedented) teaching is which you are openly declaring?
For you set forth some startling things, foreign and strange to our ears; we wish to know therefore just what these things mean—
For the Athenians, all of them, and the foreign residents and visitors among them spent all their leisure time in nothing except telling or hearing something newer than the last—
So Paul, standing in the center of the Areopagus [Mars Hill meeting place], said: Men of Athens, I perceive in every way [on every hand and with every turn I make] that you are most religious or very reverent to demons.
For as I passed along and carefully observed your objects of worship, I came also upon an altar with this inscription, To the unknown god. Now what you are already worshiping as unknown, this I set forth to you.
3. Mary, the mother of JESUS - she pondered JESUS in her heart for 33+ years but never did what it says. Her name after JESUS was gone never rose up as a leader.
Luke 2:19
But Mary was keeping within herself all these things (sayings), weighing and pondering them in her heart.
Luke 8:20-21
And it was told Him, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to have an interview with You.
But He answered them, My mother and My brothers are those who listen to the Word of God and do it!
4. John, the Baptist
It was already prophesied that JESUS will heal blind eyes.
Isaiah 29:18
And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and out of obscurity and gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.
Isaiah 61:1
THE SPIRIT of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound,
Luke 7:22-23
So He replied to them, Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the good news (the Gospel) preached to them.
And blessed (happy—with life-joy and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, apart from outward conditions—and to be envied) is he who takes no offense in Me and who is not hurt or resentful or annoyed or repelled or made to stumble [whatever may occur].
5. Governor Herod
Matthew 14:1-6
AT THAT time Herod the governor heard the reports about Jesus,
And he said to his attendants, This is John the Baptist; He has been raised from the dead, and that is why the powers of performing miracles are at work in Him.
For Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison [to stow him out of the way] on account and for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
For John had said to him, It is not lawful or right for you to have her.
Although he wished to have him put to death, he was afraid of the people, for they regarded John as a prophet.
But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst [before the company] and pleased and fascinated Herod,
6. Pontius Pilate - he already encountered GOD in the Person of JESUS, but he never got saved with his encounters.
John 18:37-40
Pilate said to Him, Then You are a King? Jesus answered, You say it! [You speak correctly!] For I am a King. [Certainly I am a King!] This is why I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the Truth. Everyone who is of the Truth [who is a friend of the Truth, who belongs to the Truth] hears and listens to My voice.
Pilate said to Him, What is Truth? On saying this he went out to the Jews again and told them, I find no fault in Him.
But it is your custom that I release one [prisoner] for you at the Passover. So shall I release for you the King of the Jews?
Then they all shouted back again, Not Him [not this Man], but Barabbas! Now Barabbas was a robber.
7. The rich young ruler
Matthew 19:16
And behold, there came a man up to Him, saying, Teacher, what excellent and perfectly and essentially good deed must I do to possess eternal life?
Matthew 19:21-22
Jesus answered him, If you would be perfect [that is, have that spiritual maturity which accompanies self-sacrificing character], go and sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; and come, be My disciple [side with My party and follow Me].
But when the young man heard this, he went away sad (grieved and in much distress), for he had great possessions.
Illustration: Encounter GOD Retreat is man's way of reaching out to GOD, thinking they can "control" or put in one place all believers of their church and for them to have an encounter, it just don't happen like that, encounters with GOD are a personal thing. There are varieties of encounters, yes they may say successful, we have an attendance of 300+ and they all paid their meal stub, breakfast, lunch and dinner but are they really successful? If all the believers can show a nail painted red and testify that they have bowed and kneeled before the cross of CHRIST? Is it really the CROSS of CHRIST? or just antique wood made to look like a cross and not a tree? A cross beautified by men's traditions can't bring encounters with GOD, encounters with GOD all started with the heart, because the heart is the issue, not the cross.
1 John 5:10
He who believes in the Son of God [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] has the testimony [possesses this divine attestation] within himself. He who does not believe God [in this way] has made Him out to be and represented Him as a liar, because he has not believed (put his faith in, adhered to, and relied on) the evidence (the testimony) that God has borne regarding His Son.
Hebrews 10:22
Let us all come forward and draw near with true (honest and sincere) hearts in unqualified assurance and absolute conviction engendered by faith (by that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness), having our hearts sprinkled and purified from a guilty (evil) conscience and our bodies cleansed with pure water.
Hebrews 3:12
[Therefore beware] brethren, take care, lest there be in any one of you a wicked, unbelieving heart [which refuses to cleave to, trust in, and rely on Him], leading you to turn away and desert or stand aloof from the living God.
The issue is the heart and it needs to be changed by GOD so it will renew every time we read the WORD of GOD.
Jeremiah 7:19
Am I the One Whom they provoke to anger? says the Lord. Is it not themselves [whom they provoke], to their own confusion and vexation and to their own shame?
Hosea 10:2
Their heart is divided and deceitful; now shall they be found guilty and suffer punishment. The Lord will smite and break down [the horns of] their altars; He will destroy their [idolatrous] pillars.
Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
If your meditation of the WORD does not transform you, then you will end up just like another "mary" always pondering but never a doer, never transformed, never changed.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
James 1:22
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
1 Timothy 2:4
Who wishes all men to be saved and [increasingly] to perceive and recognize and discern and know precisely and correctly the [divine] Truth.
2 Timothy 3:5
For [although] they hold a form of piety (true religion), they deny and reject and are strangers to the power of it [their conduct belies the genuineness of their profession]. Avoid [all] such people [turn away from them].
2 Timothy 3:7
[These weak women will listen to anybody who will teach them]; they are forever inquiring and getting information, but are never able to arrive at a recognition and knowledge of the Truth.
2 Timothy 3:7
always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth.
