Scripture: 1 John 4:7-4:12
Have you ever known one of those guys who are into restoring cars? Most of us do. They scour the junkyards and the abandoned farmsteads looking for old wrecks. When we see a dilapidated old rust bomb sitting out in a field with weeds growing through the rusty floorboards they see a classic car. Though there is no paint remaining, they imagine that there is. Though the tires have long since rotted away, they see it in white side walls. Though the seats are nothing but rusty springs, they see them with perfectly stitched and piped upholstery. They giggle like little children on Christmas morning when they find such a wreck. As they haul them home on big trailers, they do so with big smiles on their faces. They smile even though they realize they’ve taken on a big project. They smile even though they know They will invest countless hours and no small amount of money to bring it back to life. But they will do it. And we don’t understand them.
But when, at the last, we see their perfectly restored car driving down the road, we finally do understand. We finally see what they always saw. Everybody is delighted at the sight of a perfectly restored car. Everybody’s head turns, everybody smiles and says “That’s cool.” Wherever they park, they gather crowds.
Well, God is kind of like one of those car guys. He sees each person, no matter how broken, no matter how morally decayed, as valuable, important, and worth saving. He remembers what they were meant to be. He remembers his original design for them when he knit them together in their mother’s wombs. He remembers his original design for each person and he works to restore them to that design.
And he spares no expense. John put it this way in the text: “This is love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” The restoration begins when God gives them his holy Spirit and they come to faith in Jesus. With that, he takes them out of destructive elements and brings them into the loving care of his “garage”, the Holy Christian church. They are saved. But it doesn’t end there. Having been saved, the Lord begins to work at rebuilding their lives. He sanctifies them through the application of his word and by the power of the Holy Spirit. All of their lives become a time of restoration.So,With that said,We can truly say that we are under constant construction.
At the end of time, when all is completed and Jesus returns, these “classic” people, the people whom God designed and built and then restored will be revealed in all their glory. On that day everybody’s head will turn, everybody will smile and see what God has always seen in them. Not all will be the same. As a matter of fact, no two will be alike. But all of them will be classics, worthy of admiration. So it will be when the “sons of god are revealed”. (Rom. 8:18)
But in this text, John speaks to us where we are now. He speaks to make us more aware of who we are and who other people are. As people who believe in Jesus and are saved by grace, we are now in the “garage” of our creator. He is now using the events and people of our lives to weld, sand, grind and polish us. And among the many things that need to be fixed in us is Love. Love was meant to be an integral part of our “Chassis”! And in this text John is tweaking us; bringing to our recollection how we personally have benefited from Love, and more specifically the Love of God. If John were speaking in the terms I’m using today he’d be saying: “Hey, God loved you, You’ve experienced God’s love! You were the wreck out in the field! You were the one who was destined to rust away to nothing. But out of love for you, God found you and introduced you to his Son Jesus who died for your sins.” “You ought to be loving others who are in the same situation as you”
You really ought to be! When you don’t, you put yourself in an altogether different class. And as you separate yourself from other sinners you forget that it is only by God’s grace that you are saved. You forget God’s love.
Let me tell you what happens when you forget God's Love,and fall out of his Grace.....
1.First you find yourself back in that old,rusted-out,heap that God took you out of, Only by Grace,and your out-ward appearance is,now saying to people around you that your comfortable in this life style that once was a light in the dark,that was marveled by many,but now,looks like a train wreck!!
2.And you go as far as putting a tag on the front of this ride that says "GOD IS MY CO-PILOT" and in fact your saying that God is no longer First in your life,and your putting him in the passenger seat or worse,in the back seat!Which is finally saying....God,I don't need you to steer anymore,I've got this....But God says,Ok,Go... But you'll reap what you sow!! Galatians 6:8
3.You gave up the Battle over the enemy,to endure, to persevere, That you threw in the Towel,YOU FORGOT GODS LOVE! That scares me to death!! God forbid that anyone of us be so influenced by the ENEMY that we turn away from the love of the Father!With this said,We need to be in the scripture,Ephesians 6:10-20 Put on the whole Armour of God!!
John goes so far as to say “Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:8) Loving others is the result of God’s love working in us. As John further says “....if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” (1John 4:12) If you have no love for others, it is obvious that the Love of God is not working in you and that is a rather scary thought. It should scare you. Because it means that you are not actually in the protective garage as you might think. It means that you are out in the field, rusting away even now. Those who know God and his love will love. It’s that simple.
Matthew 7:1-4....Judge Not!!
Open your eyes! See who you are! Are you always right? Are you always justified in your actions? When others become angry and level criticism against you, is everything they say always wrong? So you imagine yourself having reached a state of perfection? If that is true, then you most certainly should be receiving the admiration of many. Everybody admires a perfectly restored car. I know what you were thinking as I said that. Your thinking “People mistreat me because I am doing the right thing...I’m being persecuted by those sinners out there because I’m right”. I’ll admit that’s possible. But do you always do the right thing? And do you always do the right thing in the right way? Do you “speak the truth in love” for instance? Or do you speak it from a different perspective? Is it possible that the way you see yourself is quite a bit different than how others see you? Is it possible that the way you see yourself is different than the way God sees you? Is it possible that you are, in fact riddled with all manner of sinful pride and arrogance and others are detecting it and treat you accordingly?
God Forbid!!
Get back in the garage! And I’ll have you know that you are welcome to come back. Come back, and once again, kneel before your loving lord. “Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God.” And he will truly restore you. Don’t be so confused. Cars do not restore themselves. Cars are restored by the mighty but loving right hand of God...namely Jesus who died for your sins....And specifically, in this case, your sins of pride and arrogance.
Come back to the garage and join the other cars! We are all in this together. “There is no difference, All of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace that came through the redemption of Christ Jesus.” (Rom. 3:23) So what will you see in the Lord’s shop. As you look around , will you see some cars in disrepair? Of course you will! That’s what’s going on here in the Holy Christian Church! Broken cars are being restored! Broken lives are being healed. Broken hearts are being mended. You must learn to see people, whose lives are in varying states of repair, in the way that God sees you: with love, and with the understanding that they can be and perhaps are being restored in Jesus; even as you, yourself are being restored in him.
