I. EXORDIUM:
Are you focus on the LORD? Do you have any concerns?
Yes, I'm focus on the LORD. No concern at all, it's given to the LORD.
Hebrews 12:2
Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
1 Peter 5:7
Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believers
III. OBJECTIVES:
To show that GOD takes care of us as we take care not to be loaded with the affairs of this world and only the affairs of the LORD.
2 Timothy 2:4
No soldier when in service gets entangled in the enterprises of [civilian] life; his aim is to satisfy and please the one who enlisted him.
IV. TEXT:
Luke 21:34
But take heed to yourselves and be on your guard, lest your hearts be overburdened and depressed (weighed down) with the giddiness and headache and nausea of self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries and cares pertaining to [the business of] this life, and [lest] that day come upon you suddenly like a trap or a noose;
V. THESIS:
Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for I only please You and satisfy You who have enlisted me to be like You in this world.
1 John 4:17
In this [union and communion with Him] love is brought to completion and attains perfection with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment [with assurance and boldness to face Him], because as He is, so are we in this world.
VI. TITLE:
Cast worldly worries to the LORD
VII. EXPLICATION:
A. Author: Dr. Luke, The Beloved Physician (close friend and traveling companion of Paul)
B. Audience: Theophilus (Greek means friend of GOD, a Christian)
C. Purpose: To give a connected and orderly narrative of the life of CHRIST as seen by eyewitnesses
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. Take heed to yourselves so that your heart will not be overburdened and depressed
"But take heed to yourselves and be on your guard, lest your hearts be overburdened and depressed (weighed down)"
Take heed or "prosecho" in Greek meaning:
1. hold the mind towards
2. pay attention to
3. to be cautious about
4. apply oneself to
5. adhere to
6. attend to
7. have regard
We are advised by GOD's WORDS to take heed or pay attention, or be careful of the ffg:
1. Make our alms (compassion) in secret
Matthew 6:1
TAKE CARE not to do your good deeds publicly or before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise you will have no reward [reserved for and awaiting you] with and from your Father Who is in heaven.
2. False prophets
Matthew 7:15
Beware of false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inside they are devouring wolves.
3. Men who will bring me to councils and flog me in their synagogues
Matthew 10:17
Be on guard against men [whose way or nature is to act in opposition to God]; for they will deliver you up to councils and flog you in their synagogues,
4. Teaching of extremes - (Pharisees) self-righteousness and (Sadducees) unbelievers of GOD
Matthew 16:6
Jesus said to them, Be careful and on your guard against the leaven (ferment) of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Matthew 16:12
Then they discerned that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Luke 12:1
IN THE meanwhile, when so many thousands of the people had gathered that they were trampling on one another, Jesus commenced by saying primarily to His disciples, Be on your guard against the leaven (ferment) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy [producing unrest and violent agitation].
a. what are these teachings?
(1) self-righteousness
(2) unbelief in GOD
(3) hypocrisy
(4) pride
(5) belief in self, anything or anyone rather than GOD
Luke 20:46
Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes and love to be saluted [with honor] in places where people congregate and love the front and best seats in the synagogues and places of distinction at feasts,
5. Look out for one another
Luke 17:3
Pay attention and always be on your guard [looking out for one another]. If your brother sins (misses the mark), solemnly tell him so and reprove him, and if he repents (feels sorry for having sinned), forgive him.
Review, take care of the following:
1. Make our alms (compassion) in secret
2. False prophets
3. Men who will bring me to councils and flog me in their synagogues
4. Teaching of extremes - (Pharisees) self-righteousness and (Sadducees) unbelievers of GOD
5. Look out for one another
B. Traps to take care of:
1. giddiness, headache and nausea of self-indulgence - surfeiting
2. drunkenness
3. worldly worries and cares pertaining to the business of this life
"with the giddiness and headache and nausea of self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries and cares pertaining to [the business of] this life, and [lest] that day come upon you suddenly like a trap or a noose;"
As a CHRISTian believer we are not advised to take care of our life, or our enemies but take care of ourselves.
Luke 21:34
But take heed to yourselves and be on your guard, lest your hearts be overburdened and depressed (weighed down) with the giddiness and headache and nausea of self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries and cares pertaining to [the business of] this life, and [lest] that day come upon you suddenly like a trap or a noose;
Take care that too much pressure from this world will lead you away from the LORD.
Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].
Deuteronomy 29:19
And lest, when he hears the words of this curse and oath, he flatters and congratulates himself in his [mind and] heart, saying, I shall have peace and safety, though I walk in the stubbornness of my [mind and] heart [bringing down a hurricane of destruction] and sweep away the watered land with the dry.
Stubbornness or stiff-necked against GOD's WORDS. If GOD's WORDS warned you, then take heed to the warning.
When GOD'S WORDS say go right, go right and then go left. Always choose to go with GOD's WORDS and not contrary or against it.
Deuteronomy 30:19
I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live
DISCUSSION OF THESE TRAPS TO TAKE CARE OF:
1. giddiness, headache and nausea of self-indulgence - surfeiting
Surfeiting or "kraipale" in Greek meaning:
a. headache
b. seizure of pain
c. caused by drunkenness
d. debauch - to lead astray, like seduce, to corrupt with lewdness, to seduce from duty or allegiance
The Greek word used here was only mentioned on our text and the LORD never repeated it again. It's interesting to note that the LORD will not push Himself to us, we are the ones to seek Him and run to Him, not the other way around, the only time He ran is when He met us as a sinner, now that we are sons, we are to run to Him.
Luke 15:20
So he got up and came to his [own] father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity and tenderness [for him]; and he ran and embraced him and kissed him [fervently].
John 1:12
But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name—
Psalms 53:2
God looked down from heaven upon the children of men to see if there were any who understood, who sought (inquired after and desperately required) God.
Psalms 14:2
The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men to see if there were any who understood, dealt wisely, and sought after God, inquiring for and of Him and requiring Him [of vital necessity].
Inquire after GOD, require GOD in your daily devotions, don't stop unless GOD meets you or you have encountered GOD. EGR (Encounter GOD Retreat) does not happen once a year or once in your life, it happens moment by moment you realized that you need GOD's Presence.
Abide in GOD'S Presence always.
John 8:31
So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples.
The difference between a mere believer and a disciple, is that the latter abides in GOD's WORDS and the latter's life is made sure he follows GOD's WORDS in faithfulness and obedience.
2. drunkenness
Drunkenness or "methe" in Greek meaning:
a. an intoxicant
b. intoxication
Romans 13:13
Let us live and conduct ourselves honorably and becomingly as in the [open light of] day, not in reveling (carousing) and drunkenness, not in immorality and debauchery (sensuality and licentiousness), not in quarreling and jealousy.
Galatians 5:21
Envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
You can be drunken not from wine alone but from the cares of this world.
3. worldly worries and cares pertaining to the business of this life
Cares or "merimna" in Greek meaning:
a. distraction
b. solicitude
c. care
What are cares of this life as enumerated by the bible:
a. cares, riches, pleasures of life
Matthew 13:22
As for what was sown among thorns, this is he who hears the Word, but the cares of the world and the pleasure and delight and glamour and deceitfulness of riches choke and suffocate the Word, and it yields no fruit.
Mark 4:19
Then the cares and anxieties of the world and distractions of the age, and the pleasure and delight and false glamour and deceitfulness of riches, and the craving and passionate desire for other things creep in and choke and suffocate the Word, and it becomes fruitless.
Luke 8:14
And as for what fell among the thorns, these are [the people] who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked and suffocated with the anxieties and cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not ripen (come to maturity and perfection).
Whatever care is that, we are sure that our body is not designed by the LORD to carry burdens or cares, but we give it to the LORD all of it so the focus of our lives is the LORD alone.
1 Peter 5:7
Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.
IX. CONCLUSION:
When you focus on the LORD JESUS and be JESUS-conscious and not concern, burden, and cares of this world focused, then all becomes distraction to you and the LORD strengthens you to complete His will in your life.
Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for I only please You and satisfy You who have enlisted me to be like You in this world.
