Two Invitations
Proverbs 9:1-18 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
3 She hath sent forth her maidens:
she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy
is understanding.
11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied,
and the years of thy life shall be increased.
12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
14 For she sitteth at the door of her house,
on a seat in the high places of the city,
15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:
16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither:
and as for him that wanteth understanding,
she saith to him,
17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread
eaten in secret is pleasant.
18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

INTRODUCTION
1. In his discourses on the value of seeking after wisdom, Solomon has varied his approach...
a. He makes his own appeal, as a father.
Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
Proverbs 4:1 Hear, ye children, the instruction
of a father, and attend to know understanding.
b. He personifies wisdom as a lady who invites people to pay heed.
Proverbs 1:20 Wisdom crieth without;
she uttereth her voice in the streets:
Proverbs 8:1 Doth not wisdom cry?
and understanding put forth her voice?
2. His discourse presents a picture of two women, both extending invitations...
a. One, The Lady is Wisdom - Pr 9:1-12
b. The other, The Woman of Wickedness 13-18
Whose invitation will we accept? The Call of the Wild or the Call of the Wise
The Lady of Wisdom or the
Woman of Wickedness
I. THE INVITATION OF
The LADY of WISDOM (9:1-12)
A. HER PREPARATION...
1. Her beautiful home: “Heaven’s Sounding..”
a large house “Jn.14:2 mansions” with “7” pillars
a. The number seven suggests to many,
the principal of completeness.
b. Compare the seven-fold qualities of wisdom described by James - Jm 3:17
James 3:17 However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure. Then it is peaceful, gentle, obedient, filled with mercy/good deeds, impartial, and sincere.
2. Her sumptuous feast: meat and wine,
a furnished table – Carefully and Beautifully
Psalm 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
Luke 22:29-30 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
30 That ye may eat and drink at my table
In my kingdom, and sit on thrones…….
B. HER PLEA...
1. She wants to be heard - Pr 9:3
a. She has sent out her maidens
(reminding us of Jesus, sending His apostles)
b. She cries from the highest places of the city
2. She invites the simple and those who lack understanding vs the proud/educated - Pro 9:4-6
a. To eat and drink of her prepared feast
b. To forsake foolishness and live,
to go in the way of Understanding & Godliness
3. She won't invite scoffers - Pr 9:7-9
a. Correcting a scoffer only shames
and harms the one doing the correcting
b. The wise and just appreciate
and learn from correction
The Lady of Wisdom makes great effort
to reach those who will listen.
C. HER PROMISE... She promises…..
1. Wisdom and understanding - Pr 9:10
a. To those who fear the Lord
b. To those who know the Lord
2. Long life and peace - Pr 9:11
Proverbs 3:2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
Proverbs 3:16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
a. Days will be multiplied
b. Years will be added
3. To reap the benefit of blessings - Pr 9:12
a. Wisdom will bless you with God's help.
b. Scorn, on the other hand, will hurt you, you will bear everything alone.
The Lady of Wisdom wants you
to have the best life possible!
The invitation of the Lady of Wisdom is good.
But now let’s consider the alternative...
II. THE INVITATION OF The WOMAN of WICKEDNESS (9:13-18)
Wicked, Immoral, Egotistical, Reckless, Senseless
A. HER PREPARATION...
1. She really makes no preparation
2. She is "loud, seductive and knows nothing"
3. The Woman of Wickedness is loudmouthed, empty-headed, and brazenfaced"
B. HER PLEA...
1. She sits at the door of her house - Pr 9:14a
a. Unlike the Lady of Wisdom
b. Who “sent out” her maidens to be heard
2. She sits on a high seat “by” the high places.
The Lady of Wisdom cries out but, The Woman of Wickedness cries out “seated” “” lazy “”???
3. She calls to those who pass by - Pr 9:15-16
a. Especially the simple
b. And those who lack understanding
The Woman of Wickedness competes with
The Lady of Wisdom, for the “souls of men”.
C. HER PROMISE...
1. That stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant - Pr 9:17
a. An allusion to solicit intimacy/sex.
Proverbs 5:15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
b. But it is a false promise.
Proverbs 20:17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth is be filled with gravel.
Proverbs 5:3-5 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth
is smoother than oil:
4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. 5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
2. The truth is unknown to the simple minded.
a. Her home is the house of the dead.
Proverbs 2:18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
b. Her house is the way to hell.
Proverbs 7:27 Her house is the way to hell,
going down to the chambers of death.
The Woman of Wickedness is known for her adulterous ways, promises much but delivers “O”
CONCLUSION
1. Whose invitation shall we accept...?
2. Lady or the Tramp
3. Call of the Wild or Call of the Wise
a. That of the Lady of Wisdom, who prepared much and delivers what she promises?
b. Or that of the Woman of WICKEDNESS, who promises much and delivers nothing?
c. The choice should be obvious, even to the simple and those lacking understanding!
Matthew 24:4-5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Matthew 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Ephesians 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
Proverbs 4:7-13 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. 8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. 9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. 10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. 11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. 12 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. 13 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.
