Message Point: We should obey the commands of God because we love Him, not because we have to.
Focus Passage: John 14:15-21 (Pew Bible page 1242)
Supplemental Passage: "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17 NASB)
Introduction: Talk about the advent of the “seat belt” law and how hard it was to get used to, but now, you feel naked without a seat belt and will buckle it, not for the law’s sake, but because you don’t feel comfortable without it.
I. Obedience of the Law
a. Compulsory Obedience
b. Results in frustration and legalism
c. You can’t pick and choose; you must obey ALL of the Law
II. Obedience out of Love
a. Voluntary Obedience
b. Results in God’s glory and rewards
c. Christ’s example: Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8 NASB)
d. … you are not under law but under grace. (Romans 6:14b NASB)
e. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. (Galatians 3:24 ESV)
f. Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men. For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. (Titus 3:1-3 NASB)
