VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. GOD slows down the process of judgement
"In the morning therefore, you shall present your tribes. And the tribe which the Lord takes shall come by families; and the family which the Lord takes shall come by households; and the household which the Lord takes shall come by persons."
Hierarchy of people:
1. Tribes by tribes
2. Families by families
3. Households by households
4. Man by man
The LORD certainly, and infinitely knows all things from eternity past, but why does He have to go into the trouble of doing this before He pinpoints Achan?
1. Because of His Great Mercy and Love to people even His enemies
Romans 5:8 (Amplified Bible)
5:8 But God shows and clearly proves His [own] love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for us.
2. Because of He wanted Achan to repent
Romans 2:4 (Amplified Bible)
2:4 Or are you [so blind as to] trifle with and presume upon and despise and underestimate the wealth of His kindness and forbearance and long-suffering patience? Are you unmindful or actually ignorant [of the fact] that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repent (to change your mind and inner man to accept God’s will)?

17:30 Such [former] ages of ignorance God, it is true, ignored and allowed to pass unnoticed; but now He charges all people everywhere to repent (to change their minds for the better and heartily to amend their ways, with abhorrence of their past sins),
B. If you don't become living sacrifice, you're better for a dead sacrifice
Achan prioritized his pride, while GOD was doing the process of selection, he can step out of the crowd and volunteered to be the guilty one because that's the true case with him. And he admitted to the crowd and begged for GOD's mercies in his life, but he does not want to do it. He loved his life and so he losed it.
John 12:25-26 (Amplified Bible)
12:25 Anyone who loves his life loses it, but anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. [Whoever has no love for, no concern for, no regard for his life here on earth, but despises it, preserves his life forever and ever.]
12:26 If anyone serves Me, he must continue to follow Me [to cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying] and wherever I am, there will My servant be also. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
Rather than serving the LORD alive and enthusiastic, he wanted to die. There's always a choice GOD places in our hands. Only 2 choices: death or life. You can be a living sacrifice. For example, if the doctors has already pronounced death sentence on you, you can be alive that is, if you choose to serve GOD in your remaining life, and GOD will extend your life, as it happened to King Hezekiah.
Isaiah 38:1-6 (Amplified Bible)
38:1 IN THOSE days King Hezekiah of Judah became ill and was at the point of death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, came to him and said, Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.
38:2 Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord
38:3 And said, Remember [earnestly] now, O Lord, I beseech You, how I have walked before You in faithfulness and in truth, with a whole heart [absolutely devoted to You], and have done what is good in Your sight. And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
38:4 Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying,
38:5 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; behold, I will add to your life fifteen years.

GOD in His Mercies the only way out of sin is through Him. He wanted us not to become robots but human in accepting our fault so we can claim forgiveness from Him. There's no forgiveness if there's no acceptance and you still deny that you are a sinner, CHRIST can't come into your heart.

Achan chosed to cling to his pride and so his fall (death) came on him.

Did Achan know that GOD knows all things? He can't escape GOD. He could have saved his life and his family with his confession of his sins. GOD could have forgiven Him and cleansed him from all his unrighteousness. Like Judas he ran away from JESUS, but unlike Peter ran towards JESUS for forgiveness.

7:24 And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan son of Zerah, and the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them to the Valley of Achor.
7:25 And Joshua said, Why have you brought trouble on us? The Lord will trouble you this day. And all Israel stoned him and those with him with stones, and afterward burned their bodies with fire.

The only way out of sin and punishment (death) is admission of your sins and the rest is easy because there's no pride that will hinder. In your eyes, you're already dead, but in GOD's eyes, you are made alive. Hallelujah!! Dead people don't have prides, they don't have any feelings any more and gets hurt. Only alive people in the world have prides.

Achan lived out his name, for his name means "trouble, troublesome" but like Jabez, he could lived out a different life, for Jabez means "pain, grieve, sorrowful" but instead he became honorable for GOD honored him, while his mother cursed him to a life of pain.

4:9 Jabez was honorable above his brothers; but his mother named him Jabez [sorrow maker], saying, Because I bore him in pain.
4:10 Jabez cried to the God of Israel, saying, Oh, that You would bless me and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and You would keep me from evil so it might not hurt me! And God granted his request.
Yes, it's possible that among your neighbors, even your relatives, yes even the mother that bore you, to them you are a pain but in GOD's eyes you are honorable. Which opinion is important to you? GOD's or people? I prefer GOD's opinions.
IX. CONCLUSION:
GOD loved us from eternity past even before the foundation of the world BUT GOD needed our "change of mind" (repentance) so we can receive more. GOD is not withhelding from us, He lavishes us with His Grace.
