I. EXORDIUM:
Who are you like? Martha or Mary?
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believers
III. OBJECTIVES:
To show that we need to be busy with the LORD and not for the LORD. To show different standard of living or lifestyles of faith, we pattern our lifestyle of living according to Mary.
IV. TEXT:
Luke 10:38-42 (Amplified Bible)
10:38 Now while they were on their way, it occurred that Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha received and welcomed Him into her house.
10:39 And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching.
10:40 But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]!
10:41 But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things;
10:42 There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.
V. THESIS:
Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for You've enabled us to pray in tongues every time and everywhere so we will never leave Your Presence.

VIII. MAIN BODY:
1. Mary receives the LORD in her heart while Martha received the LORD into her house
Mary's account:
Luke 7:37-48 (Amplified Bible)
7:37 And behold, a woman of the town who was an especially wicked sinner, when she learned that He was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment (perfume).
7:38 And standing behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with [her] tears; and she wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed His feet [affectionately] and anointed them with the ointment (perfume).
7:39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw it, he said to himself, If this Man were a prophet, He would surely know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching Him—for she is a notorious sinner (a social outcast, devoted to sin).
7:40 And Jesus, replying, said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. And he answered, Teacher, say it.
7:41 A certain lender of money [at interest] had two debtors: one owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
7:42 When they had no means of paying, he freely forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?
7:43 Simon answered, The one, I take it, for whom he forgave and cancelled more. And Jesus said to him, You have decided correctly.
7:44 Then turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, Do you see this woman? When I came into your house, you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
7:45 You gave Me no kiss, but she from the moment I came in has not ceased [intermittently] to kiss My feet tenderly and caressingly.
7:46 You did not anoint My head with [cheap, ordinary] oil, but she has anointed My feet with [costly, rare] perfume.
7:47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, many [as they are], are forgiven her—because she has loved much. But he who is forgiven little loves little.
7:48 And He said to her, Your sins are forgiven!
Martha's account:
Luke 10:38 (Amplified Bible)
10:38 Now while they were on their way, it occurred that Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha received and welcomed Him into her house.
There was an encounter with the LORD JESUS of Mary before she was able to sat at LORD JESUS's feet, her sins are forgiven as well before she was able to listen with focus on the LORD JESUS's teachings. But with all due respect to Martha, she welcomed LORD JESUS's at her house but it was never said that her sins are forgiven or anything that she met LORD JESUS before this event. You can serve the LORD JESUS but make sure you are converted or a believer first before doing that.
John 3:7 (New International Version)
3:7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'
Nicodemus tried serving the LORD JESUS before being converted or born again but he was confused all the more.
John 3:4 (Amplified Bible)
3:4 Nicodemus said to Him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother’s womb again and be born?
2. Mary sat at the feet of LORD JESUS while Martha was distracted
Luke 10:39-40 (Amplified Bible)
10:39 And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching.
10:40 But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]!
Mary still needs to stand and help in the kitchen, she have to do that, but before anything else, she still needs to be in GOD's Presence, looking up and hearing GOD's voice, this major part was always forgotten by CHRISTians who are already ministry involved. Out of their busyness for the LORD JESUS, they forgot their devotions. She was distracted by another co-worker: Mary, because she's not focused on the LORD JESUS Himself. Martha was busy for the LORD but not the LORD.
Hebrews 12:2 (Amplified Bible)
12:2 Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Ephesians 2:6 (Amplified Bible)
2:6 And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] in Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
Ephesians 1:21-23 (Amplified Bible)
1:21 Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come.
1:22 And He has put all things under His feet and has appointed Him the universal and supreme Head of the church [a headship exercised throughout the church],
1:23 Which is His body, the fullness of Him Who fills all in all [for in that body lives the full measure of Him Who makes everything complete, and Who fills everything everywhere with Himself].
Remember the place of power, rule and authority is at the feet of JESUS. I prefer sitting at the LORD JESUS's as my Master, because the LORD JESUS is not my equal.
He's my LORD, and I'm the servant.
He's my Helper and I'm the helped.
He's my Master and I'm the slave.
He's my GOD and I'm His worshipper.
He's my Savior and I'm the saved.
If you will notice the I'm is I am, LORD JESUS is "I am". We're able to do our spiritual position in life because it's LORD JESUS's performance not ours that made the difference.
Philippians 2:13 (Amplified Bible)
2:13 [Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight.
Illustration:
While I was serving as a bible study leader in a church, I was talking with the associate pastor who was very stressed and tired, and I asked him "pastor, how many bible study do you handle every week?" and He answered "1"(proudly), and I smiled and nodded and I hurried up to turn my back from him appearing as if talking with another person. I never bothered telling him how many bible studies I'm handling every week, because I'm handling 10 bible studies and I felt like humiliated before talking with the pastor, because I treated myself lazy, because I know before I can handle 20 bible studies per week but never did so.
My testimony:
Every time I hold bible studies, I get strengthened, because when I'm teaching, I'm treating myself sitting at LORD JESUS's feet and learning all over again from Him, that's the secret. After every hour of bible study, it's like I drank an energy drink that boosted and strengthened me for another bible study.
3. Mary listened while Martha talked.
The LORD JESUS knows all the answer and everything, He needed not to learn anything from us because HE'S GOD-ALMIGHTY. The LORD JESUS knows what we're thinking, imagine the LORD JESUS replied to what Simon, the Pharisee was thinking.
Luke 7:39-40 (Amplified Bible)
7:39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw it, he said to himself, If this Man were a prophet, He would surely know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching Him—for she is a notorious sinner (a social outcast, devoted to sin).
7:40 And Jesus, replying, said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. And he answered, Teacher, say it.
Mark 4:25 (New Century Version)
4:25 Those who have understanding will be given more. But those who do not have understanding, even what they have will be taken away from them.“
We hear GOD's WORDS with a goal to understand so we can be doers not just hearers.
James 1:22 (Amplified Bible)
1:22 But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].
We can't hear and talk at the same time, because our mouth will surpass our hearing. That's why we have two ears and 1 mouth with a goal to listen/hear more and talk less. And since we're still on earth, we have to work and our time with the LORD JESUS is maybe 2 to 4 hours a day is not enough for me, or sometimes 2 hours if I'm really tired, but it's very limited that's why we never waste it and hear intently from the LORD JESUS.
Matthew 6:8 (Amplified Bible)
6:8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
In a relationship, each are given opportunity to talk while in a GOD-man relationship we are also given opportunity to talk and our "talking" part is in the praise and worship.
4. Mary listened to LORD JESUS's WORDS while Martha listened to what her mind is saying
Our goal why we come in services is to increase our faith. A series of hearing and hearing the preaching is what increases our faith, not the praise and worship part. There are other church members that will not miss the praise and worship part of a worship service but will go to their cars when the preaching starts. The best way is to go to church early minister to other believers as well, prepare your tithes and offerings and when the service starts, give all you got in praise and worship and when preaching starts "sit at JESUS's feet and hear"
Romans 10:17 (Amplified Bible)
10:17 So faith comes by hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the preaching [of the message that came from the lips] of Christ (the Messiah Himself).
Luke 11:28 (Amplified Bible)
11:28 But He said, Blessed (happy and to be envied) rather are those who hear the Word of God and obey and practice it!
Hebrews 4:12-13 (Amplified Bible)
4:12 For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.
4:13 And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, naked and defenseless to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do.
Every WORD of GOD that comes out from the pulpit is for you for that day, it's for you to strengthen you physically and spiritually. If you will not listen to the LORD JESUS then you've already decided to listen to other things such as your heart, our heart also talks, and it even condemns us, that's why we learn that the LORD is greater than our hearts, so our priority to listen and hear is the LORD, even if 12 apostles and 1 LORD will come to your house unexpectedly choose to listen to the LORD JESUS not to the 12 apostles.
1 John 3:20 (Amplified Bible)
3:20 Whenever our hearts in [tormenting] self-accusation make us feel guilty and condemn us. [For we are in God’s hands.] For He is above and greater than our consciences (our hearts), and He knows (perceives and understands) everything [nothing is hidden from Him].
1 Corinthians 4:4 (Amplified Bible)
4:4 I am not conscious of anything against myself, and I feel blameless; but I am not vindicated and acquitted before God on that account. It is the Lord [Himself] Who examines and judges me.
Ephesians 1:18 (Amplified Bible)
1:18 By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones),
Be JESUS-conscious not self-conscious.
5. Mary came near to listen to LORD JESUS's WORDS while Martha came near LORD JESUS to rebuke Him
Luke 10:40 (Amplified Bible)
10:40 But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]!
If the LORD JESUS can hear what Simon, the Pharisee was thimking, of course the LORD JESUS can hear Martha's heart. Our heart and mind is the same in the bible and the heart part of Martha was this "Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone?" but of course women say what they are thinking much faster than men can do. Even if Martha never said a thing but continued to self-pity, the LORD could heard her and will bid her to come near for a rebuke. But it was the other way around, this time the slave and servant rebuked the Master and the LORD.
Remember the protocol in a church setting if someone wrongs you? You approach that person privately and not a third-party. Martha approached a third party and that third party happens to be the LORD JESUS. Oopps. wrong Person. After Martha rebuked the LORD JESUS, she commanded Him.
Matthew 18:15-16 (Amplified Bible)
18:15 If your brother wrongs you, go and show him his fault, between you and him privately. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother.
18:16 But if he does not listen, take along with you one or two others, so that every word may be confirmed and upheld by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
Martha came near the LORD JESUS, expecting to have her way, but the LORD JESUS is always infinitely higher than our ways, so she received a rebuke.
Isaiah 55:8-9 (Amplified Bible)
55:8 For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord.
55:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.
Luke 10:40-42 (Amplified Bible)
10:40 But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]!
10:41 But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things;
10:42 There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.
6. Mary rested while Martha was anxious and troubled
Luke 10:41-42 (Amplified Bible)
10:41 But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things;
10:42 There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.
How can we rest in this world if we have many things to do? At the feet of JESUS, that's the answer. We rest in our faith.
At the feet of JESUS, there's peace.
At the feet of JESUS, there's faith.
At the feet of JESUS, there's healing.
At the feet of JESUS, there's salvation.
At the feet of JESUS, there's comfort.
At the feet of JESUS, there's life.
At the feet of JESUS, there's solutions.
At the feet of JESUS, there's strength.
Martha only need ONE - the LORD JESUS for at the feet of the LORD JESUS, everything you need is already there.
At the feet of JESUS - is a type of Presence of the LORD, we always go to the Presence of the LORD in our devotions. On top of everything, we need to have our devotions first and foremost. As a pastor, you don't need to counsel first, you don't need to pray for the sick, you don't need to teach in your bible study, you don't need to minister to your associate pastors. Come to the LORD JESUS first and foremost, be counseled first by the LORD JESUS, be comforted first by the LORD JESUS, be ministered to by the LORD JESUS first.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (Amplified Bible)
1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of sympathy (pity and mercy) and the God [Who is the Source] of every comfort (consolation and encouragement),
1:4 Who comforts (consoles and encourages) us in every trouble (calamity and affliction), so that we may also be able to comfort (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, with the comfort (consolation and encouragement) with which we ourselves are comforted (consoled and encouraged) by God.
Psalms 95:11 (Amplified Bible)
95:11 Wherefore I swore in My wrath that they would not enter My rest [the land of promise].
Because these stiff-necked Israelites never approached GOD in faith, but they approached GOD in complaining and murmurings.
7. What Mary got will not be taken away from her, while Martha needs to rest sometime from all her work.
Luke 10:42 (Amplified Bible)
10:42 There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.
We have free will to choose what's best for us. Unbelievers don't have a choice, whatever they do or not, they will go to hell, not because they are wicked but because they rejected JESUS as LORD and SAVIOR.
Deuteronomy 30:19 (Amplified Bible)
30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live
1 Peter 1:4-5 (Amplified Bible)
1:4 [Born anew] into an inheritance which is beyond the reach of change and decay [imperishable], unsullied and unfading, reserved in heaven for you,
1:5 Who are being guarded (garrisoned) by God’s power through [your] faith [till you fully inherit that final] salvation that is ready to be revealed [for you] in the last time.
Colossians 3:3-4 (Amplified Bible)
3:3 For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.
3:4 When Christ, Who is our life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in [the splendor of His] glory.
No one can separate us from the love of GOD, that's our treasure - JESUS is our Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price.
Matthew 13:45-46 (Amplified Bible)
13:45 Again the kingdom of heaven is like a man who is a dealer in search of fine and precious pearls,
13:46 Who, on finding a single pearl of great price, went and sold all he had and bought it.
6 LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM MARY AND MARTHA:
Position of Mary that we need to be in our spiritual position with the LORD JESUS:
1. Sat at JESUS's feet - Mary never considered herself equal with the LORD JESUS, the slave's position is at the feet of their master. We can never be equaled to our LORD, because He's our Savior.
Matthew 10:24-25 (Amplified Bible)
10:24 A disciple is not above his teacher, nor is a servant or slave above his master.
10:25 It is sufficient for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant or slave like his master. If they have called the Master of the house Beelzebub [master of the dwelling], how much more will they speak evil of those of His household.
2. Looked up at the LORD JESUS - We look up at JESUS as our Model and Pattern and not to any pastors in the church. Problem with this if the pastor dies, then what will happen to you? Yes, we choose our mentors in the church, but still they are mentors because they follow JESUS. But what if, there are no other persons to look at, I'll go for JESUS.
3. Listened with complete focus, no distraction, no trouble, no anxiety. Get understanding every time you hear and hear the preaching of the WORD.
Ephesians 1:18 (Amplified Bible)
1:18 By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones),
Matthew 15:10 (Amplified Bible)
15:10 And Jesus called the people to Him and said to them, Listen and grasp and comprehend this:
Position of Martha - these are overworked, stressed out CHRISTians of today:
1. Distracted - Don't be distracted with cares of this world, wealth/riches of this world or lusts for other things. Give them all to JESUS.
1 Corinthians 7:35 (Amplified Bible)
7:35 Now I say this for your own welfare and profit, not to put [a halter of] restraint upon you, but to promote what is seemly and in good order and to secure your undistracted and undivided devotion to the Lord.
Mark 4:19 (Amplified Bible)
4:19 Then the cares and anxieties of the world and distractions of the age, and the pleasure and delight and false glamour and deceitfulness of riches, and the craving and passionate desire for other things creep in and choke and suffocate the Word, and it becomes fruitless.
1 Peter 5:7 (Amplified Bible)
5:7 Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.
2. Martha never sat at the master's feet, that's why she's able to rebuke JESUS, she considered LORD JESUS as equal to her. If you are a servant of CHRIST, then prove it by serving other believers.
Matthew 7:21 (Amplified Bible)
7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven.
Ephesians 6:7 (Amplified Bible)
6:7 Rendering service readily with goodwill, as to the Lord and not to men,
Colossians 3:23-24 (Amplified Bible)
3:23 Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men,
3:24 Knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [and not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [real] reward. [The One Whom] you are actually serving [is] the Lord Christ (the Messiah).
3. Anxious and troubled - We are not anxious and we're not troubled what we do, we pray. It's very easy to pray rather than worry. Replace your worries with prayers. If you have cares, cast them to the LORD so you can pray.
Matthew 6:25 (Amplified Bible)
6:25 Therefore I tell you, stop being perpetually uneasy (anxious and worried) about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; or about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life greater [in quality] than food, and the body [far above and more excellent] than clothing?
Philippians 4:6 (Amplified Bible)
4:6 Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.
1 Peter 5:7 (Amplified Bible)
5:7 Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for You've enabled us to pray in tongues every time and everywhere so we will never leave Your Presence.
Ephesians 6:18 (Amplified Bible)
6:18 Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people).
Jude 1:20 (Amplified Bible)
1:20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit;
1 Corinthians 14:2 (Amplified Bible)
14:2 For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].
When serving the LORD:
Ephesians 6:7 (Amplified Bible)
6:7 Rendering service readily with goodwill, as to the Lord and not to men,
Colossians 3:23-24 (Amplified Bible)
3:23 Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men,
3:24 Knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [and not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [real] reward. [The One Whom] you are actually serving [is] the Lord Christ (the Messiah).
1 Corinthians 15:58 (Amplified Bible)
15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be firm (steadfast), immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord [always being superior, excelling, doing more than enough in the service of the Lord], knowing and being continually aware that your labor in the Lord is not futile [it is never wasted or to no purpose].
