I. EXORDIUM:
Are you a good shepherd who is an associate of the LORD?
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believers
III. OBJECTIVES:
To show that shepherds need to act like associates of the LORD. Sheeps are helpless and wandered because of the fault and problem with shepherd.
IV. TEXT:
Matthew 9:36 (Amplified Bible)
9:36 When He saw the throngs, He was moved with pity and sympathy for them, because they were bewildered (harassed and distressed and dejected and helpless), like sheep without a shepherd.
V. THESIS:
Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for You always taught us to be like You in caring for the sheep. Thank You that You have given us same motivation and heart for the sheep. LORD of the Harvests, send in workers for the vineyard of the LORD for the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.
VI. TITLE:
Sheep without a shepherd
VII. EXPLICATION:
A. Author: Matthew (also called Levi)
B. Date written: 60 A.D.
C. Purpose: To show that Jesus of Nazareth was the kingly Messiah of Jewish prophecy.—Thompson Chain - Bible Book Outlines
D. To whom written: Jews
E. Main Theme: Jesus is God's promised anointed Messiah, the King of the Jews.—Thompson Chain - Bible Book Outlines
F. Keywords: Fulfilled
G. Key verses:
Matthew 16:16-19 (The Message)
16:16 Simon Peter said, "You're the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
16:17 Jesus came back, "God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah! You didn't get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am.
16:18 And now I'm going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.
16:19 "And that's not all. You will have complete and free access to God's kingdom, keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth, earth and heaven. A yes on earth is yes in heaven. A no on earth is no in heaven."
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. JESUS was moved with pity and sympathy for them
"When He saw the throngs, He was moved with pity and sympathy for them,"
Multitudes or "ochlos" in Greek meaning:
1. vehicle
2. throng as borned along
3. rabble
4. class of people
5. riot: company, number of people
Compassion, pity or sympathy or "splagchnizomai" in Greek meaning:
1. to feel sympathy, to pity
2. to have the bowels yearn
JESUS will just feel compassion on them or sympathy but will never attempt to teach or preach to them because of Matthew 7:6. JESUS practices what He preached.
Hebrews 4:15 (Amplified Bible)
4:15 For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning.
Hebrews 5:2 (Amplified Bible)
5:2 He is able to exercise gentleness and forbearance toward the ignorant and erring, since he himself also is liable to moral weakness and physical infirmity.
Matthew 7:6 (Amplified Bible)
7:6 Do not give that which is holy (the sacred thing) to the dogs, and do not throw your pearls before hogs, lest they trample upon them with their feet and turn and tear you in pieces.
B. They are bewildered (harassed, distressed, dejected and helpless)
"because they were bewildered (harassed and distressed and dejected and helpless),"
JESUS has specific nation to minister and win, that's the lost sheep of Israel, not just any sheep.
Matthew 15:24 (Amplified Bible)
15:24 He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Matthew 10:5-6 (Amplified Bible)
10:5 Jesus sent out these twelve, charging them, Go nowhere among the Gentiles and do not go into any town of the Samaritans;
10:6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
What these multitudes needed to do is just they need to go home.
1 Kings 22:17 (Amplified Bible)
22:17 And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills as sheep that have no shepherd, and the Lord said, These have no master. Let them return every man to his house in peace.
It's not the problem and fault of the sheep but it's the problem and fault of the shepherd.
Characteristics of evil shepherds:
1. They are blind, without knowledge, dumb dogs; they can't bark, dreaming, lying down, they love to sleep.
Isaiah 56:10 (Amplified Bible)
56:10 [Israel’s] watchmen are blind, they are all without knowledge; they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; dreaming, lying down, they love to slumber.
2. They are greedy. They can't understand. They turned to their own way, each one to his own gain.
Isaiah 56:11 (Amplified Bible)
56:11 Yes, the dogs are greedy; they never have enough. And such are the shepherds who cannot understand; they have all turned to their own way, each one to his own gain, from every quarter [one and all].
3. They led the sheep astray. - Reason: lack of teaching
Jeremiah 50:6 (Amplified Bible)
50:6 My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray [to favorite places of idolatry] on mountains [that seduce]. They have gone from [one sin to another] mountain to hill; they have forgotten their [own] resting-place.
4. They don't feed the sheep.
Ezekiel 34:3 (Amplified Bible)
34:3 You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, you kill the fatlings, but you do not feed the sheep.
5. They did not do their pastoral work. Instead they rule the sheep with force and hardhearted harshness.
a. strengthen the diseased and weak
b. healed the sick
c. bandage the hurt and the crippled
d. bring back those who gone astray
e. find the lost
Ezekiel 34:4 (Amplified Bible)
34:4 The diseased and weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, the hurt and crippled you have not bandaged, those gone astray you have not brought back, the lost you have not sought to find, but with force and hardhearted harshness you have ruled them.
Zechariah 11:16 (Amplified Bible)
11:16 For behold, I will raise up a false shepherd in the land; the lost and perishing he will not miss or visit, the young and scattered he will not go to seek, the wounded and broken he will not heal, nor will he feed those that are sound and strong; but he will eat the flesh of the fat ones and break off their hoofs [to consume all the flesh].
6. They are absent.
Zechariah 10:2 (Amplified Bible)
10:2 For the teraphim (household idols) have spoken vanity (emptiness, falsity, and futility) and the diviners have seen a lie and the dreamers have told false dreams; they comfort in vain. Therefore the people go their way like sheep; they are afflicted and hurt because there is no shepherd.
Good characteristics of good shepherds: Shepherds are associates of the LORD.
Zechariah 13:7-8 (Amplified Bible)
13:7 Awake, O sword, against My shepherd and against the man who is My associate, says the Lord of hosts; smite the shepherd and the sheep [of the flock] shall be scattered, and I will turn back My hand and stretch it out again upon the little ones [of the flock].
13:8 And in all the land, says the Lord, two-thirds shall be cut off and perish, but one-third shall be left alive.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Proverbs 27:23 (Amplified Bible)
27:23 Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and look well to your herds;
