VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Don't remember your former sinful nature

"If they had been thinking with [homesick] remembrance of that country from which they were emigrants,"

Mindful or "mnemoneuo" in Greek meaning:

1. to exercise memory

2. recollect

3. to punish, also to rehearse

4. make mention, be mindful, remember

Philippians 4:8 (Amplified Bible)

4:8 For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].

Hebrews 12:2 (Amplified Bible)

12:2 Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Abram came from Ur of Chaldea. Chaldees are all astrologers by profession (Source: Strong's Greek and Hebrew Dictionaries)

Genesis 11:31 (Amplified Bible)

11:31 And Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth together to go from Ur of the Chaldees into the land of Canaan; but when they came to Haran, they settled there.

If Abram continues to remind himself where he came from, he could have returned. This is why the LORD used the stars to illustrate to Abraham regarding his descendants. So that when Abram will look to the stars, he will not remember that he is an astrologer but he will remember GOD's promise to him. That when he look to the stars, he will no longer remember that he's an astrologer but he's a father of many nations.

Genesis 15:5 (Amplified Bible)

15:5 And He brought him outside [his tent into the starlight] and said, Look now toward the heavens and count the stars—if you are able to number them. Then He said to him, So shall your descendants be.

Hebrews 11:12 (Amplified Bible)

11:12 So from one man, though he was physically as good as dead, there have sprung descendants whose number is as the stars of heaven and as countless as the innumerable sands on the seashore.

Abraham does not want to return to his former country Ur of Chaldea, because his country now is Heaven, that's why He taught this to his slave and Isaac.

Genesis 24:6-8 (Amplified Bible)

24:6 Abraham said to him, See to it that you do not take my son back there.

24:7 The Lord, the God of heaven, Who took me from my father’s house, from the land of my family and my birth, Who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, To your offspring I will give this land—He will send His Angel before you, and you will take a wife from there for my son.

24:8 And if the woman should not be willing to go along after you, then you will be clear from this oath; only you must not take my son back there.

Examples of people who want to return because they thought of it:

1. Israelites after Exodus - they always think of the food they have in Egypt, when they lusted for meat, GOD gave them meat, when they lusted for bread, GOD gave them manna. But they still chose to remember Egypt and not GOD who provided all these things.

Numbers 14:4 (Amplified Bible)

14:4 And they said one to another, Let us choose a captain and return to Egypt.

Numbers 11:4 (Amplified Bible)

11:4 And the mixed multitude among them [the rabble who followed Israel from Egypt] began to lust greatly [for familiar and dainty food], and the Israelites wept again and said, Who will give us meat to eat?

Exodus 16:31 (Amplified Bible)

16:31 The house of Israel called the bread manna; it was like coriander seed, white, and it tasted like wafers made with honey.

2. Simon Peter - the LORD saved him and reminded him that every time he will look at the fishes, he will remember that he's a fisher of men.

John 21:3 (Amplified Bible)

21:3 Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing! They said to him, And we are coming with you! So they went out and got into the boat, and throughout that night they caught nothing.

Matthew 4:19 (Amplified Bible)

4:19 And He said to them, Come after Me [as disciples—letting Me be your Guide], follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men!

3. Judas Iscariot - when he looked at the bag he always remember the money inside, nothing else, so he committed suicide without the LORD.

John 12:6 (Amplified Bible)

12:6 Now he did not say this because he cared for the poor but because he was a thief; and having the bag (the money box, the purse of the Twelve), he took for himself what was put into it [pilfering the collections].

4. King Asa - started right but ended up wrong. He removed the remembrance from the LORD's temple, a remembrance that will say GOD's glory and honor.

1 Kings 15:11 (Amplified Bible)

15:11 And Asa did right in the eyes of the Lord, as did David his father [forefather].

2 Chronicles 16:10-12 (Amplified Bible)

16:10 Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in prison [in the stocks], for he was enraged with him because of this. Asa oppressed some of the people at the same time.

16:11 The acts of Asa, from first to last, are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.

16:12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was diseased in his feet—until his disease became very severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but relied on the physicians.

Reason: 2 Chronicles 16:2 (Amplified Bible)

16:2 Then Asa brought silver and gold out of the treasuries of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house and sent them to Ben-hadad king of Syria, who dwelt at Damascus, saying,

5. Pharaoh of Egypt - he promised Moses to let them go but he consumed all the 10 plagues over and over again. Temporary relief reminded him not to let go the Israelites.

Exodus 8:15 (Amplified Bible)

8:15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was temporary relief, he made his heart stubborn and hard and would not listen or heed them, just as the Lord had said.

B. So you don't have opportunity to return to it

"they would have found constant opportunity to return to it."

Opportunity or "kairos" in Greek meaning:

1. occasion

2. set or proper time

3. season, convenient

Returned or "anakampto" in Greek meaning:

1. to turn back

When I first became an intern pastor, I was in a college, but my conviction led me to burn all bridges so that I can't return again to being an engineer but only a pastor.

Proverbs 26:11 (Amplified Bible)

26:11 As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool returns to his folly.

Exodus 8:15 (Amplified Bible)

8:15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was temporary relief, he made his heart stubborn and hard and would not listen or heed them, just as the Lord had said.

Matthew 12:45 (Amplified Bible)

12:45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there. And the last condition of that man becomes worse than the first. So also shall it be with this wicked generation.

So this wicked generation always goes for temporary relief, that's why they want to get relief but not permanent in accepting the LORD JESUS as their LORD and SAVIOR.

Apostle Peter said these people who have backslid have become entangled in them again. Their focus is the pollutions of this world not JESUS CHRIST.

2 Peter 2:20-22 (Amplified Bible)

2:20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through [the full, personal] knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they again become entangled in them and are overcome, their last condition is worse [for them] than the first.

2:21 For never to have obtained a [full, personal] knowledge of the way of righteousness would have been better for them than, having obtained [such knowledge], to turn back from the holy commandment which was [verbally] delivered to them.

2:22 There has befallen them the thing spoken of in the true proverb, The dog turns back to his own vomit, and, The sow is washed only to wallow again in the mire.

IX. CONCLUSION:

1 Corinthians 10:31 (Amplified Bible)

10:31 So then, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you may do, do all for the honor and glory of God.

Let everything remind you of the LORD, that we give Him the glory and honor that He deserves alone.

Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for You fill my heart to overflowing with Your Presence.
