Set Apart
August 17, 2014 Morning Service
Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK
Rick Boyne
Message Point: We are set apart from the world and commanded to be holy.
Focus Passage: 1 Peter 1:13-16
Supplemental Passage: Abstain from every appearance of evil. (1 Thessalonians 5:22 MKJV)
Introduction: Describe the feelings and traditions of the church sanctuary. Tell about the weddings, funerals, salvations, etc. Explain how we do certain things in this room and certain things in other rooms. Talk about times past when people would have had a hissy fit if someone brought something to eat or drink into the sanctuary. Transition to talking about our lives; how we, too, are set apart (from the world) to be special and holy.
I. Not like the world
a. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2 NASB)
b. But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (1 Peter 2:9 NASB)
c. Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation. (1 Peter 2:11-12 NASB)
II. Like Christ
a. because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY." (1 Peter 1:16 NASB)
b. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-8 NASB)
III. For God’s Glory
a. "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 NASB)
b. For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; (2 Corinthians 2:15 NASB)
Application/Invitation: Are you walking according to your own desires? Or are you walking a walk that is pleasing to God? Forsake the world and take up the cross of Christ!
