Introduction:
Exodus 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?
This is a line in the Triumphant Song of Moses after they had crossed the Red Sea on dry land
glorious in holiness: He is worthy to be magnified, worthy to be honored in His holiness (or because of His holiness)
His holiness had shone forth through delivering His people
The holiness of God is His glory
Holy does not have a synonym but the translated Hebrew word means sacred, pure, undefiled, set apart
It is the righteousness, the perfection, the goodness and the blessedness of His nature
It is primarily by this glorious perfection that all creation knows Him
This is why He is called the Holy One, the Holy One of Israel.
God is more often prefixed Holy than Almighty.
God is more often described as Holy than any other part of His nature.
The name of God is rarely if ever referred to
-His wise name or -His mighty name
But always His holy name!
This is His greatest title of honor
Holy God, Holy Name, Holy One, Holy One of Israel
Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit
1. Holy Ground
Back up a few verses from the I AM text and we see where it begins...
Exodus 3:1-6
1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law , the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked , and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt .
4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
5 And he said , Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
We serve a Holy God, His presence is Holy
His presence should be valued, there is a reverence, God is to be revered, the things of God, the presence of God there is a reverence
No need for shoes, this ground is perfect and pure
2. We Can Trust Him Bc Of His Holiness
Psalm 145:17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.
His holiness permeates all of His ways, all of His works!
Psalm 89:35 Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.
God has actually sworn by His holiness that He will not lie
He has laid His holiness down as a pledge for assurance of His promises
Its as though, He is saying “This is my most perfect attribute, there is nothing higher that I can point to, and by this I pledge and swear by that I will not lie to David”
3. God Defends His Holy Reputation
Ezekiel 39:7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
Holy = Pure, Unblemished
1 John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
Psalm 5:4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
He is good!
Everything He does is pure and good!
4. God Is Worshipped In Heaven Based On His Holiness
Revelation 4:1-8
1 After this I looked , and, behold , a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said , Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold , a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.
3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting , clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying , Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was , and is, and is to come .
In this amazing description of the throne room Heaven, God is worshipped based on His Holiness
They could have worshipped Him for His creation, His power, His wisdom ---
But all those attributes would be terrible without holiness!
5. Righteousness of God is revealed to us on Earth from Faith to Faith
Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
6. Because He Is Holy, He Can Lead Us In Holiness
Psalm 5:4-12
4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
8 Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies ; make thy way straight before my face.
9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.
11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice : let them ever shout for joy , because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.
12 For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
Leviticus 20:26 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.
7. Because He Is Holy He Can Give It To Us
2 Corinthians 5:16-21
16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away ; behold , all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
8. As Obedient Children... Ultimately Faith & Hope In Christ!
1 Peter 1:14-16
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 Because it is written , Be ye holy; for I am holy.
2 Timothy 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Conclusion:
Matthew 6:31-33
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
