Nothing but the Blood

Message Point: Only the blood of Jesus Christ can wash away our sins.
Focus Passage: Hebrews 9:11-14
Supplemental Passage: Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. (Hebrews 9:22)
Introduction: I was talking with someone the other day about my eye disease. For those of you who don’t know, I have a rare corneal disease called Fuch’s Dystrophy. It is where the cells in the 6th layer of the cornea are dying and, to make a long story short, I will eventually go blind. The only “cure” for this disease is a corneal transplant. The person I was talking to said, “So, the only way for you to be cured is for someone to die.” That got me thinking about my sins and how the only way for my sins to be forgiven is that somebody had to die…
I. The Old Covenant
a. Required blood sacrifices of blemish-less goats and calves
b. Completed by priests
c. Presented in a earthly representation of heaven
d. Required to do over and over because it wasn’t good enough
II. The New Covenant
a. Required the blood of Jesus who was without sin
b. Completed by Jesus, Himself, serving as the ultimate High Priest
c. Presented in Heaven, not in a mere representation
d. Completed this action once for all, never having to be made again
III. Implications of the New Covenant
a. Not by works
b. Not through others (priests)
c. Cannot be “undone”
d. Only through faith in Jesus Christ
Invitation:
so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him. (Hebrews 9:28)
