If you sit down to a piano and play one key you create a sound. Now if you strike another key at the same time, you will have one of two tones. You will hear a harmonious tone, or you will hear a dissonant tone. You'll know right away which tone you hear. If you strike two keys at the same time that create a harmonious tone, it sounds good. If you strike middle C on a key board, and at the same time, strike the E key, you will hear a harmonious chord. It sounds good. It sounds like these tones go together. But if you strike the middle C on a key board and then at the same time strike the D key right next to it, you'll hear dissonance. The tone will not sound good. These two notes will not sound like they go together.
In music language when two notes are played at the same time that create dissonance and then one tone goes up or down and lingers or stops on a harmony, this movement from dissonance to harmony is called resolution. The chord has been resolved.
Keeping our attention on the keyboard let's create an analogy. Let's say that the trinity of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are in harmony. When God created Adam and Eve the Scripture says that God would walk the garden with them. God kept the harmony together. That would be like striking the middle C and the E key at the same time. It sounds nice. This is a harmonious tone. But we also know from Genesis that Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Sin creates dissonance. So Adam and Eve slipped down from the E key to the D key. If you play middle C and the key next to it this is dissonance. Where there was harmony, now there is a really annoying sound. We're told in the Bible that Jesus resolves the dissonance between us and God. Romans 5:18, "Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone." God doesn't move. In the Old Testament, when God demands repentance from His children He begins by saying, "I don't change." God is always C, people without Jesus are D and they are in dissonance with God, and those who follow Jesus are E and are resolved through Jesus back into harmony with God.
Spiritually, this process is called Reconciliation. In short we can say God reconciles us through Jesus in that He takes us from dissonance with God to harmony.
For those of us who are in harmony with God there are benefits in this relationship. Paul discusses a few things that are blessings for Jesus followers who live in harmony, or who are reconciled with God and he begins this outline at the beginning of Romans 5.
I am blessed to be right with God because...
I enjoy peace with God. Romans 5:1-2 "Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have PEACE with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory."
Peace is confidence. Think about a time when you were in a situation that you didn't feel prepared for. When we moved to Canada we had never moved to another country before. Even though we had all our paperwork together we knew there might possibly be complications to crossing the border with all our possessions. The church hired an immigration lawyer who had walked us through the process of making sure all our documents were in order, so we felt confident about that, but, what if something was out of order? How could we be sure? We weren't. I can tell you the closer we got to the border the more nervous I got. For days Kristi and I prayed that God would provide an efficient and quick border crossing. I struggled to have peace about the border crossing for days.
We don't feel at peace when we are in conflict. We don't feel at peace when we lack confidence. This is one of the amazing blessings of Jesus gift. Jesus is responsible for our border crossing from death to life. Because of what He did for me I can have confidence, peace, that I'm right with God. "And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever" Isaiah 32:17
I am blessed to be right with God because...
I can be happy that my problems and trials are endurance and character builders. Romans 5:3-4 "We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation."
There are a lot of verses in the Bible that say those who love God are happy to suffer for Him. That we consider our trials and suffering an opportunity to show the power of His Spirit in our life. James 1:2-3; 2 Corinthians 12:9-10; Philippians 2:17-18; Luke 6:22-23; 1 Peter 3:14; Hebrews 12:10-11 These are just a few of these verses.
Nobody looks forward to suffering. I certainly don't. But everyone suffers. Kristi and I have a friend who suffered a stroke last week and he passed away yesterday. His son in law posted this on facebook and I quote, "Today we lost a great Man - An amazing Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Dad-in-law, Friend, Pastor, Mentor, Teacher, Preacher, Youth Camp Director, Archer, Hunter, and lover of Jesus. We love you so much and will miss you beyond words. Father-God, we praise you for Him. We are in agony that he is gone.. but we rejoice that he is with you!" I was friends with this man who passed away and I can guarantee you that his funeral will be full of joy.
How can we rejoice when someone we love and care about dies suddenly and without any sign of illness? If that person loved Jesus, followed Jesus and obeyed Jesus we are confident in his salvation. My friend is with Jesus now. For his daughters, his wife, family and friends, this trial, this suffering of his loss, is our opportunity to grow in our confidence. We are happy that through this, as with any other trial, we are building endurance and confidence.
I am blessed to be right with God because...
God has given me His supernatural power to share His love with others. Romans 5:5 "And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love."
You know those people who are hard to love. You know who I'm talking about. Of course I'm talking about me, right? I'm hard to love. Paul teaches us in this chapter that God thinks that I'm ungodly. God believes that I'm a sinner. But He loves me and this is why He sent Jesus for me. Even though I'm hard to love. The Holy Spirit provides us the power to love the ungodly as God does and to love sinners as God does. The big Spiritual word for this is 'compassion'. Jesus tells us the most important command is to love God and to love others. The Holy Spirit is the power that fills us up with this love.
Trying to follow the command of Jesus to love God and others without the power of the Spirit would be like trying to fill a bucket with water that has holes in the bottom of it. The bucket won't fill up. A Christian person can say they love God and they can claim to love others, but, John tells us that a person who says this proves it by the way they live. "And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us." 1 John 3:23-24
I pray you are reconciled with God and that you are experiencing the blessing of Romans 5. Are you at peace with God? Are you happy when you are able to build endurance and character through trials and/or suffering? Are you full of the Holy Spirit loving others as God loves you and sharing His compassion?
I pray you are in harmony with God.
