Message Point: We must make sure our attitude towards others honors God.
Focus Passage: Philippians 2:3-8
Supplemental Passage: Sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all." (Mark 9:35)
Introduction: The noted English architect Sir Christopher Wren was supervising the construction of a magnificent cathedral in London. A journalist thought it would be interesting to interview some of the workers, so he chose three and asked them this question, "What are you doing?" The first replied, "I'm cutting stone for 10 shillings a day." The next answered, "I'm putting in 10 hours a day on this job." But the third said, "I'm helping Sir Christopher Wren construct one of London's greatest cathedrals." Source Unknown.
I. Have the same attitude of Jesus
a. Jesus could have insisted that everyone worship Him as king
b. Instead he served God by serving others
c. Jesus didn’t complain
II. Become a servant of others
a. Jesus washed His disciples’ feet
b. He died on the cross for us so that we might be reconciled to God
III. Consider others’ interests as more important than your own
a. Remember that other people have feelings, ideas and suggestions that are just as valid as your feelings, ideas and suggestions
b. Jesus’ idea of how to be great in HIS KINGDOM was to put others first and yourself last and to be the servant of everyone
Application: Youth are struggling with younger kids coming into the group. Adults are struggling with some of our ministries in the church. Some are manipulating, or at least maneuvering to get people on their side. All of this MUST STOP. Look in verse 2: “Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.” What is that purpose? To glorify God with whatever you do! By becoming great in HIS KINGDOM!
