Mothers Day 2013
Psalms 127 NKJV
A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep. 3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. 5 Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.
Where would we be without the women of the Bible?
Even more specifically where would we be without the Mother’s of the Bible?
Eve – the mother of all mankind
Sara – the mother of Isaac
Jochebed – the mother of Moses
Hannah - the mother of Samuel
Bathsheba – the mother of Solomon
Elizabeth – the mother of John the Baptist
Mary – the mother of Jesus
God in His wisdom chose Jesus to be born of a woman to enter into the world through the travail of human birth. Jesus entered the world like any other child yet was without sin.
We learn in Genesis that child birth became much more painful for women because of the fall of Adam and Eve.
Genesis 3:16
16 To the woman he said, I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.
The very pain of childbirth is a consequence of our sin against God in the Garden of Eden.
Mothers pay the price for that precious fruit of the womb right from the very start.
Fathers pay later as providers, protectors and planners. We will save their contributions for Fathers Day a month from now.
Our scripture talks about the need for the Lord to build the house.
You might wonder what house the Psalmist is writing about. The inference is that it is the Lords house which includes your house and my house as followers of God.
It is vanity to think that our homes can be built without entrusting God as the master architect.
God equips Mothers to be the Chief contractors. Mothers you see know what will be required to turn people into a family and to turn children into God fearing, God loving followers of Jesus Christ.
Listing a few attributes of Mothers would include:
Love – Joy – Peace – Patience – Kindness – Goodness – Faithfulness – Gentleness and Self Control
These happen to be the same attributes listed as the fruit of the Spirit in:
Galatians 5:22 NIV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.
It would seem that God pulled from the Mothers heart the fruit of the Spirit that should be planted in us by her life long care and example.
Such virtue is characterized in this little story called I’m thirsty
A small boy is sent to bed by his mother...
[Five minutes later]
Mom...
What?
I'm thirsty. Can you bring me a glass of water?
No. You had your chance. Lights out.
[Five minutes later]
Mom...
WHAT?
I'm THIRSTY...Can I have a glass of water?
I told you NO! If you ask again I'll have to spank you!
[Five minutes later]
Mommm...
WHAT?
When you come in to spank me, can you bring me a glass of water?

We see here that the child knows Mom keeps her word, establishes order for the household and carries out discipline with justice and love. What better way to build a Christian home?
It was Rev. Billy Sunday ……..who said…..
God could not be everywhere, so he gave us mothers. Now there may be poetry in it, but it's true that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, and if every cradle was rocked by a good mother, the world would be full of good men/women, as sure as you breathe. If every boy and every girl today had a good mother, the saloons and disreputable houses would go out of business tomorrow.
A young man one time joined a church and the preacher asked him: What was it I said that induced you to be a Christian?
Said the young man: Nothing that I ever heard you say, but it is the way my mother lived.
Mothers when you live for Jesus Christ the fruit of your womb becomes a heritage for the world. By your life long gift our world is blessed.
Your children become like arrows in a quiver. They are ready and able to defend and enforce that which you’ve taught and instructed them. They need not be fired from a bow because all who might oppose them can clearly see the power and strength that they are equipped with because of your tireless efforts.
When confronted by the enemy who is pressing at the gates of their hearts your children can speak with love instead of words of anger and so vanquish the enemy with the fruit of the Spirit that you imparted to the fruit of your womb.
Our reward in the family of God; are the children of God that you Mothers have worked so hard to bless us with.
Thank you Mothers for the Christian men and women of today and for those you will give us tomorrow.
God Bless you in all your work and ministry as Mothers and God teach us to honor and respect you for all you have accomplished and are continuing to accomplish even now. – Amen.
