Summary: What is God's view on success, real success? A look at what makes us successful in God's eyes versus the world's view of success.

Real Success – Gods’ way Sermon by Paddick van Zyl 25-Apr-2010

Text

Joshua 1:7-8

7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

In 1966, about a year before he died, the brilliant physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer said, "I am a complete failure!" This man had been the director of the Los Alamos Project, a research team that produced the atomic bomb, and he had also served as the head of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Yet, in looking back, he saw his achievements as meaningless. When asked about them, he replied, "They leave on the tongue only the taste of ashes."

The story is told of a new bank president who met with his predecessor and said, "I would like to know what have been the keys to your success." The older gentleman looked at him and replied, "Young man, I can sum it up in two words: Good decisions." To that the young man responded, "I thank you immensely for that advice, sir, but how does one come to know which are the good decisions?" "One word, young man," replied the sage. "Experience." "That's all well and good," said the younger, "but how does one get experience?" "Two words," said the elder. "Bad decisions."

Today In The Word, November, 1989, p.23.

A How does the world view success:

• *Great job, money, prestige, status, fame,

• *Misplaced not trusting in God but in self /I

• *Step on those on your way up the ladder

• *Get all you can, can it and sit on the can

• *More is the answer

• *Use any means you can to reach your goal (bribery, blackmail etc)

• *Live it up

Success may mean, but is not limited to:

*a level of social status

*achievement of an objective/goal

*the opposite of failure

*the succession of successfully executed tasks and successes

*You made it

*You reached the set or approved mark/goal

*Failure is just the opposite: Not reaching the goal,

B Where does success originate from/ who invented it?

From God!! He made Adam and Eve with the view to be successful in the garden of Eden. Their choice was to disobey and fail.

Gen 1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Gen 39:2

The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian

Gen 24:12

12 Then he said, “O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

C Some facts to ponder on about success:

*Success is not like an instant pudding ‘Just add milk and whisk for 5min and enjoy’ (take with and show packet of instant pudding

Yet so many people try this method thinking it will accomplish results

 It can not be bought

 inherited

 transferred

 comes by knowing God

 walking with God

 spending time in His presence

 doing His will

 being sold out to Him/word/purpose.

*We can not live in or operate in someone else’s success/anointing

*True success has a vision in mind. Tower of Babel, they had one vision but God confused their language and they lost the vision and their goal : Building the tower.

Proverbs 29:18 (Amplified Bible)

18Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]--blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he.

Success does not mean never having failures /setbacks but learning from these setbacks.

*Do not mistake activity for achievement

*If I am through learning, I am through

*Be quick but don’t be in a hurry

Let’s look briefly at 4 people in the Bible and their success in life:

1 * Daniels life:

*He was favored together with his 3 companions by the guards and the king

*He was successful even in the furnace because he gave God all the glory for the revealing of the dream of Nebuchadnezzar. He did not take the glory. He acknowledged God before men.

Dan 2:30

But as for me, this secret has not been revealed to me because I have more wisdom than anyone living, but for our sakes who make known the interpretation to the king, and that you may know the thoughts of your heart.

*Even under the threat of death he still gave wise counsel to the king. Stress exposes a persons true heart /character.

*He did not deny his faith in God. He endured.

* God was able to trust him with the end time revelation which is a huge responsibility because he proofed himself humble and faithful.

Success does not mean never having failures /setbacks but learning from these setbacks.

2 *Noah

• Once he knew the will of God for his life (building the ark) he obeyed and enjoyed Success.

• He obeyed Gods instruction and was saved

• He assumed total cost of the ark & supplies ( to construct) It cost him dearly but what would it have cost him had he not build the ark?

• He could have built the ark using some of his own ideas or altered the measurements only slightly but he stuck to God’s measurement.

Hebrews 11:7 (New King James Version)

7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

Hebrews 11:7 (Amplified Bible)

7[Prompted] by faith Noah, being forewarned by God concerning events of which as yet there was no visible sign, took heed and diligently and reverently constructed and prepared an ark for the deliverance of his own family. By this [his faith which relied on God] he passed judgment and sentence on the world's unbelief and became an heir and possessor of righteousness ([a]that relation of being right into which God puts the person who has faith).(A)

3 *Davids life

*David’s heart was motivated by two things only. I do not think it was the money, the fame or the power. I think he was motivated by:

1. The glory of God – vs. 26, 29, 36 – Goliath was mocking the God of Israel and David could not stand the thoughts of that happening!

2. By his role as the newly anointed king – 1 Sam. 16:1-12 – Just as David had protected his sheep from the attacks of the lion and bear, vs. 34-36, he would protect his Israel from the attack of Goliath.

*One of the primary reasons God used David to defeat Goliath was because David had the right motives for wanting that giant dead!

*David did not know a thing about shields, spears and swords. He wasn’t schooled in armies, armor and archery. Yet, David knew God! He knew that God had always given him the victory in the past, and he knew that God does not change, Heb. 13:8.

*David knew that God was greater than any giant. He also knew that God had a plan for his life and that plan did not include him dying at the hand of Goliath. So, when David went out to fight, he only took those things that had worked for him in the past: he took his staff, his sling, five smooth stones, and Sovereign God, vs. 40.

1 Samuel 18:5-16

(Ill. Three times in this chapter we are told that “David behaved himself wisely.” This phrase speaks of someone “walking properly.” It refers “to a person who knows how to carry themselves.” It is speaks of more than mere manners. It speaks of a person who watches what they say, what they do, and how they act; because they know they are being watched. It has the idea of walking “accurately and carefully,” as if one were navigating a minefield. It is the kind of walk we are all called upon to exhibit, Eph. 5:15. There are three areas were this accurate, careful walk of David was on display.)

A. v. 5 He Behaved Himself Well In Spite Of Life’s Promotions – After David defeated Goliath, he continued to prove himself to be a faithful, loyal subject day by day. David did not allow his victory over the Philistine to go to his head. David knew he was climbing to the top, but he was willing to take the climb one step at a time.

(Note: There is always a danger when we see some measure of success in our walk with the Lord. When God allows us to see a victory or two, we need to beware of the snare of pride. It has a way of telling us that we are greater than we actually are. Thank God for the victories He gives, but be careful that they do not go to your head, Pro. 16:18; 1 Cor. 10:12.)

B. v. 14 He Behaved Himself Well In Spite Of Life’s Problems – Even when Saul tried to kill him, David still carried himself the right way. David could have become bitter, or he could have been overcome by a desire for revenge. Instead, David continued to carry himself well and set a good example.

C. v. 30 He Behaved Himself Well In Spite Of Life’s Possibilities – David has, through the providence of God, become far more popular than King Saul. David has married into Saul’s family. David has been blessed and he has prospered greatly in Israel. He is in a position to attempt an overthrow of Saul’s kingdom. After all, he is the king! But, instead of trying to elevate himself; David is content to wait on the Lord. David continues to carry himself well in spite of the opportunity to promote himself.

(Note: Be very careful when it seems that you are on the way up. There is a tendency for us to blow our own horn. But, if we are wise, and if we are walking properly; we will leave the horn tooting to the Lord. He knows where we are and He knows how to elevate us in His time. Our duty is to live for Him and make a proper presentation of our lives before others for His glory. After all, the Bible says, “charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own,” 1 Cor. 13:4-5.)

A. v. 10 David Was Surrendered – David knew the king was against him, still David walked into that throne room, picked up that harp and played his music. He had a job to do, and he did it faithfully.

B. v. 11 David Was Steadfast – In his hatred, Saul attempted to kill David. But, notice the phrase, “And David avoided out of his presence twice.” Saul tried to kill David and David ran away. I don’t know about you, but that would have probably finished me up. I would have turned in my resignation and headed back to the sheep fold. But not David! He was steadfast. Even though Saul tried to kill him, David returned to his post and continued doing the job he had been assigned to do.

C. v. 13 David Was Submissive – Even after Saul attempted to take his life, David kept on serving the evil king. David took his new assignment and carried to out to the best of his ability.

• True greatness is not in the things we do, but it is found in who’s we are and Who we know.

4 *Rich man v Lazarus ( Luke 16:19-31)

• This is not a parable (certain rich man) Lazarus was known to people.

• Rich man had it all ate well, lived in luxury seemed to be very successful according to people around him but when he died he found out he was actually unsuccessful being in agony in Hades while Lazarus that seemed to be so unsuccessful were in fact in paradise with God the Father.

• The rich man is finely clothed and eats well. ‘dressed in purple and fine linen ‘, the two terms together suggest a "power dresser"

• Rabbis would have seen Lazarus's life as no life at all, since they had a saying that three situations resulted in no life: depending on food from another, being ruled by one's wife and having a body covered with sores . According to this saying, Lazarus is doubly deprived.

• For many, wealth is the essence of life. It means self-sufficiency, independence and plenty of opportunity to enjoy material pleasures. Though few people attain such wealth, many strive for it.

• What will people remember you for once your life is complete on earthy for our prestige, status, position or what we accomplished for God’s kingdom

• God is not against us having things but things having (possessing) us. We can not serve two masters only one.

• What God is opposed to: God is opposed to me trying to live my earthly life while ignoring Him

• Not on me becoming successful or blessed

5 * Paul’s life

• Paul was successful in the eyes of the world (religious leaders)

• Paul was a goal-setting individual

His resume might have looked something like this: Phill 3:4-6

If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so:

• circumcised the eighth day,

• of the stock of Israel,

• of the tribe of Benjamin,

• a Hebrew of the Hebrews;

• concerning the law, a Pharisee;

• concerning zeal, persecuting the church;

• concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

• a student of Gamaliel and persecuted the Christians . Acts 22: 3,4,5

Acts 22: 3,4,5

3 “I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today. 4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women, 5 as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring in chains even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished

Acts 8:1-3

1 Now Saul was consenting to his death.

At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

3 As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.

Acts 9:1-2

1 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

Acts 9:3-9

3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”

5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?”

Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.[a] It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”

6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”

Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

7 And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. 8 Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank

*He counted his success in the world as rubbish , loss for the excellence of knowing God.

Phill 3:8

8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ NKJ

The Message Bible reads as folows

7-9The very credentials these people are waving around as something special, I'm tearing up and throwing out with the trash—along with everything else I used to take credit for. And why? Because of Christ. Yes, all the things I once thought were so important are gone from my life. Compared to the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for me is insignificant. I've dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace Christ and be embraced by him. I didn't want some petty, inferior brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind that comes from trusting Christ—God's righteousness

• Paul was humbled by God on road to Damascus he was arrogant before this humbling experience and became successful in the kingdom bringing many to salvation

Philippians 3:10-14 (New King James Version)

10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Pressing Toward the Goal

12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

1 Cor. 15:9-10 For I am the least of the apostles----But by the grace of God I am what I am---

For Paul success was:

* KNOWING Christ,

* doing His will,

* living for Him,

* pleasing Him

There was for him nothing more important This was his success

D So what is success really? How does God the Father view success:?

What is Gods’ success recipe:? Joshua 1:7-8

Looking at our text verse:

Joshua 1:7-8

7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

In other words: The word of God should be spoken by you and fill your thoughts and mind (renewing of the mind ?) and you must act on it (faith and works) then and only then will you be successful if you do not do the aforementioned you will not be successful.

• Fear God

• Obedience to His word

• Commit your way to Him

• Follow His instruction

Success is:

Doing God’s word God’s way

Living God’s word God’s way

Doing God’s will, God’s way

Success is true humility.

"Success is defined by a continuing desire to be the person God called you to be and to achieve those goals that God helps you to set," says Charles Stanley

One can become afraid to succeed or to fail

Jesus’ view of success is quite different from the world’s view:

Beatitudes Matt 5

5 Blessed are the meek,

For they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

For they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful,

For they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart,

For they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers,

For they shall be called sons of God.

44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,[h] 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren[i] only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors[j] do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

.

(Hosea 4:6 my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.)

B. If you gain the whole world without doing it God's way, then you are a loser.

C. If you lose the whole world, and did it God's way, then you are a success.

D. The key to success is seeking and finding God's will.

Matt. 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

E. Now, may we see how we are to seek God's will:

I. We Must Have An Humble Spirit

A. What is true humility?

1. Some have thought it is poverty.

2. Others have thought it to be ignorance.

3. Others think it to be disliked or hard to get along with.

B. None of these is humility. Humility is realizing that apart from God we are nothing. All that we are or ever hope to be is by the grace of God.

Illustration: The story is told of a little country boy who was out fishing. All he had was an old crooked pole, and a bent pin for a hook, but he was catching fish. A city man was fishing nearby. He had all the latest gear, but was catching nothing. He asked the little boy why he was catching fish and he was not. The boy said, "I keep out of sight and don't make a fuss."

D. Humility is taking your hands off of your life, and letting God have His way. This is real success it is not about accomplishments but His will being done.

What the bible and God term as success is seen as utter failure by the world.

When we give God glory for our success in life the kingdom of God has been spiritually set up in our hearts. ???

II. We Must Have A Hungry Heart

III. We Must Have A Hearing Ear

A. Solomon heard from heaven (v 13).

B. Moses stayed in the mountain until he head from God.

C. Someone has well said, "Many attend classes on how to speak well. We need some classes on how to listen well."

Illustration: A mother scolded her little daughter for not coming when she called. The girl protested, "But mother I did not hear you call me." The mother said, "That's because you were not listening"

*We must be sensitive to His voice.

IV. We Must Have A Heeding Will

A. Solomon came before the Lord with a heeded, yielded will before asking what God wanted him to do.

B. We cannot bargain with God. We can't say, "Lord what do you want me to do? I'll look it over, and see if that's what I want."

C. We must say, "Have Thine own way" before we can know the way

* Hurtful things in the past can hurt us in the future if we do not forget about about them will. I:t hinder our success in the now /future

what about success and accountability? I am accountable to God for the success he blessed me with

Daniel}

Jesus}

Moses}

Noah}

Paul } all shared a common trait Humbleness that caused their success in their ministry.

The success or prosperity that God has for you is always a “whole-person” prosperity.

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (3 John 2).

The prayer of John for Gaius includes 3 particulars:

1. Prosperity in secular affairs (examples)

2. Health of body (examples)

3. Health of soul (examples)

To live a life of success :

• Steadfastness is required ( a wavering person gets nowhere)

• Faith (with out faith it is impossible to please God)

• Submission (to God and His will /plan /purpose)

E Practical things we can do :

We need to memorise:

• Ponder

• speak scripture regularly

• Intentionally apply God’s word to our lives - it will produce great success

Success takes work

Physical realm

• Wise decisions/wisdom

• Effort

• Time

A. Solomon wanted to know God's will.

B. He asked for wisdom. Wisdom is knowing the mind of the Lord. Seeing things from God's view.

2 Chronicles 1:7-12 (The Message)

7 That night God appeared to Solomon. God said, "What do you want from me? Ask."

8-10 Solomon answered, "You were extravagantly generous with David my father, and now you have made me king in his place. Establish, GOD, the words you spoke to my father, for you've given me a staggering task, ruling this mob of people. Yes, give me wisdom and knowledge as I come and go among this people—for who on his own is capable of leading these, your glorious people?"

11-12 God answered Solomon, "This is what has come out of your heart: You didn't grasp for money, wealth, fame, and the doom of your enemies; you didn't even ask for a long life. You asked for wisdom and knowledge so you could govern well my people over whom I've made you king. Because of this, you get what you asked for—wisdom and knowledge. And I'm presenting you the rest as a bonus—money, wealth, and fame beyond anything the kings before or after you had or will have."

C. God has a will for your life and mine. He wants to direct in every area.

Prov. 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

1. Often it requires time. We must be willing to wait before the Lord until the answer comes.

a. He will direct you in your finances.

b. He will direct in your business affairs.

c. He will direct in your education, and in your vocation. He knows where the jobs are.

d. He will direct in your friendships and associates.

e. He will direct in your marriage.

Spiritual realm:

• Time in word

• Time in prayer

• Fellowship with the Father and Holy Spirit

• Giving up hindrances that could hinder the call of God

• Answering the call of God

Ultimate success in life : Hearing well done good and faithful servant

Eternal rewards in Heaven

Salvation

Doing God’s plan /purpose will fulfilling His calling

Success God’s way is everlasting success.

God’s anointing brings blessing and success.

Enemy’s plan : defeat /failure

Your success our success is important to God as the world look to God children being successful/blessed/anointed it is a testimony

Gods’ success will follow you to heaven & reap benefits of everlasting life and value.

Worldly success dies with the person and ends at the grave side soon to be forgotten. No eternal value.

F Success influences:

1.Attitude How you experience life/circumstances/situations

2. Emotions Joy, depression

3. View of life/others love or hate other peoples relations ships with God others

4. Spiritual walk Growth or stagnation/back sliding

*God has declared us successful/blessed. We need to posses it , take hold of it before it will be ours.

Ps 111:10

1-10 Hallelujah! I give thanks to GOD with everything I've got—

Wherever good people gather, and in the congregation.

God's works are so great, worth

A lifetime of study—endless enjoyment!

Splendor and beauty mark his craft;

His generosity never gives out.

His miracles are his memorial—

This GOD of Grace, this God of Love.

He gave food to those who fear him,

He remembered to keep his ancient promise.

He proved to his people that he could do what he said:

Hand them the nations on a platter—a gift!

He manufactures truth and justice;

All his products are guaranteed to last—

Never out-of-date, never obsolete, rust-proof.

All that he makes and does is honest and true:

He paid the ransom for his people,

He ordered his Covenant kept forever.

He's so personal and holy, worthy of our respect.

The good life begins in the fear of GOD—

Do that and you'll know the blessing of GOD.

His Hallelujah lasts forever! The Message bible

G Why people fail in life:

1. Some people lack goals:

If you do not know where you are going it does not matter if you loose your way

2. Some engage in self-disqualification

“I’m already 56 years old!”

Zacchaeus was short and unloved by people

“The man who really wants to do something finds a way, the other man finds an excuse”

“You are not obligated to succeed. You are obligated only to do your best”

“The average man does not want much, and usually gets less than that”

3. Some are too lazy (opposites to “lazy”: industrious, diligent, persistent, energetic, hard working, studious)

What did the Bible say about the lazy person (slothful, sluggard

4. Some lead a sinful life

Sin promises happiness, but never gives it

The devil tempts me with the beauty of sin, without telling me about its drastic and fatal consequences

5. Some lack faith

6. Some are shortsighted about the future

In Conclusion

When Napoleon Bonaparte mentioned to a friend his plans to invade Russia, the man tried to dissuade him by warning, “Man proposes, but God disposes.” Napoleon replied, “I dispose as well as propose.” The arrogant move of Napoleon was ultimately the turning point of his own downfall. He learned that while man may propose his plans, only God could bring them to fruition. So man must bow the stubbornness of his heart to the wisdom and might of the divine will.)

Eccl 12:13

13All has been heard; the end of the matter is: Fear God [revere and worship Him, knowing that He is] and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man [the full, original purpose of his creation, the object of God's providence, the root of character, the foundation of all happiness, the adjustment to all inharmonious circumstances and conditions under the sun] and the whole [duty] for every man. Amplified Bible

*To be successful in God's work is to fall in line with His will and to do it His way. All that is pleasing to Him is a success’

Henrietta Mears in Dream Big: The Henrietta Mears Story, quoted in Christianity

Poem: Martin Buxbaum

You can use most any measure

when you're speaking of success.

You can measure it in fancy home,

expensive car or dress.

But the measure of your real success

is one you cannot spend.

It's the way your son describes you

when he's talking to a friend.

God has a success plan just for you , tailor made. Too many Christians copy some famous or anointed person who in their eyes have reached success this will not last find out from God what His success plan is for you and this will last and bring forth the fruit and blessing God intended.

As His child, your first consideration ought to be, “What would God have me do with my life? What is the Lord’s will in this situation?” . All of the future is in the hand of the Lord. Your best course of action in this life is to find the Lord’s will for your life and follow it to the letter.
