LOOKING THROUGH THE LATTICE
OBSERVATION: MOST SCHOLARS AGREE THE SONG OF SOLOMON (SONG OF SONGS) WAS WRITTEN BY SOLOMON AROUND 970-930 B.C. SOME SCHOLARS SUGGEST THE WRITING WAS A SIMPLE EXPRESSION OF TRUE LOVE BETWEEN A MAN AND WOMAN. OTHERS SEE IT AS A FUTURISTIC FORECAST OF CHRIST AND THE CHURCH. THIS STUDY ADDRESSES THE LATTER.
INTERPRETATION: SONG OF SOLOMON 2:9 (NKJV) MY BELOVED IS LIKE A GAZELLE OR A YOUNG STAG. BEHOLD, HE STANDS BEHIND OUR WALL; HE IS LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOWS, GAZING THROUGH THE LATTICE.
MEN SEARCH THE WORD OF GOD FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. SOME SEARCH TO ARGUE, SOME FOR POETIC VALUE, SOME TO PROVE OR DISPROVE SCIENCE, SOME TO ESTABLISH A PHILOSOPHIC VIEWPOINT. SOME WANT TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH!
CHAPTER TWO OF THE SONG OF SOLOMON EXPRESSES THE BRIDE’S ADORATION OF THE BRIDEGROOM. HER ADORATION IS OBVIOUSLY GRAPHIC AND BEAUTIFUL.
THE IMAGERY AND SYMBOLISM OF MARRIAGE HERE APPLIES TO CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH, TRUE BELIEVERS. THE BRIDEGROOM, CHRIST, CHOSE THE CHURCH TO BE HIS BRIDE (EPHESIANS 5: 25-27). AS A TRUE BELIEVER, YOU ARE EXPERIENCING THE “CHURCH AGE” AND YOU MUST BE RESPONSIBLE TO CHRIST DURING THIS PERIOD. CHRIST WILL RETURN A SECOND TIME AND THE CHURCH WILL OFFICIALLY BE UNITED WITH HIM IN A WEDDING CEREMONY (REVELATION 19: 7-9 AND 21: 1-2)
APPLICATION: REVELATION 19:9 DESCRIBES THE MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB. THIS INVITATION TO THE SUPPER INCLUDES THE CHURCH, THE BRIDE OF CHRIST, OLD TESTAMENT SAINTS, AND THE MARTYRED DEAD OF THE GREAT TRIBULATION. ONLY TRUE BELIEVERS ARE INVITED!
