Mark 11:1 (Amplified Bible)

WHEN THEY were getting near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent ahead two of His disciples

V. THESIS:

We have peace because of JESUS's Peace.

VI. TITLE:

JESUS' Peace

Study of Mark 11

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: Mark, son of Mary of Jerusalem; referred to as John Mark

B. Date written: 58 B.C.

C. Purpose: To present JESUS of Nazareth as GOD's Suffering Servant, the Redeemer of the world

D. To whom written: Roman or Gentile Christians

E. Main Theme: CHRIST is the tireless servant of GOD and humanity.

F. Key word: Immediately

G. Key verse: Mark 10:45

Mark 10:45 (Amplified Bible)

10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to have service rendered to Him, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for (instead of) many.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Nearing Jerusalem

"WHEN THEY were getting near to Jerusalem,"

Jerusalem is capital of Palestine. In Hebrew or in the Old Testament, it means "founded peaceful", while in Greek or in the New Testament, it means "set ye double peace" or simply "double peace". The name is contrary to what is really happening in Jerusalem but it's the goal of the constant prayer for her.

Psalms 122:6 (Amplified Bible)

122:6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May they prosper who love you [the Holy City]!

B. Bethpage and Bethany at Mount of Olives

"to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives,"

The LORD GOD mentioned these two: Bethpage (a little district) and Bethany (a village at the Mount of Olives, about two miles (3 km) from Jerusalem, on or near the normal road to Jericho) I believe is that, it's not because Bethpage was a little district between Jerusalem and Bethany, but it has relevance on the triumphal entry of the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Bethpage means "house of unripe figs". Figs from fig trees are often unfruitful, (Luke 13:7) to start with, the fruit, and to say that it's "unripe figs" added to the uselessness of the fruit, when it comes to consuming it and benefiting from it's nutrients and Bethpage is full of it.

Luke 13:7 (Amplified Bible)

13:7 So he said to the vinedresser, See here! For these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue also to use up the ground [to deplete the soil, intercept the sun, and take up room]?

Bethany means "house of dates" or "house of misery".

Misery (Bethany) and uselessness of fruit (Bethpage) on both sides before entering peace (Jerusalem), I should say, both characterized Jerusalem today. That's why we are in constant prayer for her, both of us spiritual Jews (born again Gentiles) and physical Jews.

C. He sent two of his disciples

"He sent ahead two of His disciples"

I remembered Joshua sending two spies ahead of him to Jericho.

Joshua 2:1 (Amplified Bible)

2:1 JOSHUA SON of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as scouts, saying, Go, view the land, especially Jericho. And they went and came to the house of a harlot named Rahab and lodged there.

We know Joshua was inspired by GOD to do this, prior to Moses sending the same.

Numbers 13:2 (Amplified Bible)

13:2 Send men to explore and scout out [for yourselves] the land of Canaan, which I give to the Israelites. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader or head among them.

Mark 6:7 (Amplified Bible)

6:7 And He called to Him the Twelve [apostles] and began to send them out [as His ambassadors] two by two and gave them authority and power over the unclean spirits.

Mark 14:13 (Amplified Bible)

14:13 And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and a man carrying an [earthen] jar or pitcher of water will meet you; follow him.

Because two are better than one and sending one will have no witness validity for that individual person.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (Amplified Bible)

4:9 Two are better than one, because they have a good [more satisfying] reward for their labor;

4:10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!

4:11 Again, if two lie down together, then they have warmth; but how can one be warm alone?

4:12 And though a man might prevail against him who is alone, two will withstand him. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Deuteronomy 17:6 (Amplified Bible)

17:6 On the evidence of two or three witnesses he who is worthy of death shall be put to death; he shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.

2 Corinthians 13:1 (Amplified Bible)

13:1 THIS IS the third time that I am coming to you. By the testimony of two or three witnesses must any charge and every accusing statement be sustained and confirmed.

Deuteronomy 19:15 (Amplified Bible)

19:15 One witness shall not prevail against a man for any crime or any wrong in connection with any sin he commits; only on the testimony of two or three witnesses shall a charge be established.

JESUS our LORD know the value of these scriptures and sent them two disciples ahead of Him, not just one, in the area of reporting, so that the reports are already validated by the other disciple.

IX. CONCLUSION:

We have peace because of JESUS's Peace.

John 14:27 (Amplified Bible)

14:27 Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.]

John 16:33 (Amplified Bible)

16:33 I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]
