VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. Eve's selfish ambition
"And when the woman saw that the tree was good (suitable, pleasant) for food and that it was delightful to look at, and a tree to be desired in order to make one wise,"
1. She saw something good in the fruit that the LORD have forbidden.
"And when the woman saw that the tree was good (suitable, pleasant)"
But then again, there's a command from GOD.
Genesis 2:17 (Amplified Bible)
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and blessing and calamity you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.
That forbidden fruit is not for her, not to be consumed and eaten because it was forbidden. A type of tithe, where GOD reserves something for Him.
Leviticus 27:30 (Amplified Bible)
And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.
1 Corinthians 9:11 (Amplified Bible)
If we have sown [the seed of] spiritual good among you, [is it too] much if we reap from your material benefits?
Galatians 6:6 (Amplified Bible)
Let him who receives instruction in the Word [of God] share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his support].
2. She considered the forbidden fruit as something to be consumed
"for food"
Not all given by GOD should be consumed as food, some are food for us to consume and some are seeds to sow to others being a channel of blessing and a distribution center of GOD here on earth to show forth GOD's Providence.
Isaiah 55:10 (Amplified Bible)
For as the rain and snow come down from the heavens, and return not there again, but water the earth and make it bring forth and sprout, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
Philippians 4:19 (Amplified Bible)
And my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 9:8 (Amplified Bible)
And God is able to make all grace (every favor and earthly blessing) come to you in abundance, so that you may always and under all circumstances and whatever the need be self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation].
3. She considered the forbidden fruit delighful to look at
"and that it was delightful to look at"
But our delight should not be on things around us but on GOD alone and He will give you the desires (ambitions) of your hearts.
Psalms 37:4 (Amplified Bible)
Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.
4. She considered the tree to be desired to make one wise
"and a tree to be desired in order to make one wise"
She's already perfect in wisdom. Everything GOD created are perfect. Adam and Eve are part of GOD's perfect creation before the entrance of sin. It all had the approval of GOD.
Genesis 1:31 (Amplified Bible)
And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good (suitable, pleasant) and He approved it completely. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.
And since we know that Eve is a gift from GOD to Adam, she's perfect as well. Eve's a favor from the LORD to Adam.
James 1:17 (Amplified Bible)
Every good gift and every perfect (free, large, full) gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of all [that gives] light, in [the shining of] Whom there can be no variation [rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [as in an eclipse].
Proverbs 19:14 (Amplified Bible)
House and riches are the inheritance from fathers, but a wise, understanding, and prudent wife is from the Lord.
Proverbs 18:22 (Amplified Bible)
He who finds a [true] wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.
5. She never submitted to her Husband
She never submitted to Adam in the first place as her husband, why would she submit to her Real Husband?
Isaiah 54:5 (Amplified Bible)
For your Maker is your Husband—the Lord of hosts is His name—and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; the God of the whole earth He is called.
Does Eve really know that Adam is her husband? Yes
Genesis 3:20 (Amplified Bible)
The man called his wife’s name Eve [life spring], because she was the mother of all the living.
Why is Eve not angry with Adam when Adam "knew" her? Because she knew Adam is her husband.
Genesis 4:1 (Amplified Bible)
AND ADAM knew Eve as his wife, and she became pregnant and bore Cain; and she said, I have gotten and gained a man with the help of the Lord.
B. Problems of her selfish ambition
1. Selfish ambition will yield the following:
a. pride
b. no submission
c. strife
d. conceit
e. empty arrogance
2. It's based on superficial wisdom resulted in:
a. earthly
b. unspiritual
c. devilish
3. Since the fruit is forbidden, Eve wants to acquire it via:
a. envy
b. contention (selfish ambition)
Notice how she got attracted from the devil's offer of: "YOU WILL BE LIKE GOD"
Genesis 3:5 (Amplified Bible)
For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing the difference between good and evil and blessing and calamity.
Philippians 2:3 (Amplified Bible)
Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves].
James 3:14-16 (Amplified Bible)
But if you have bitter jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry, selfish ambition) in your hearts, do not pride yourselves on it and thus be in defiance of and false to the Truth.
This [superficial] wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual (animal), even devilish (demoniacal).
For wherever there is jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry and selfish ambition), there will also be confusion (unrest, disharmony, rebellion) and all sorts of evil and vile practices.
C. The outcome of her selfish ambition
There will be an everlasting enmity or hatred between the woman and the snake.
2 Corinthians 11:3 (Amplified Bible)
But [now] I am fearful, lest that even as the serpent beguiled Eve by his cunning, so your minds may be corrupted and seduced from wholehearted and sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
Genesis 3:4 (Amplified Bible)
But the serpent said to the woman, You shall not surely die,
The outcome are:
a. cunning corruption -
Cunning means - skillful, experienced, well-instructed. It is applied to all kinds of knowledge, but generally and appropriately, to the skill and dexterity of artificers, or the knowledge acquired by experience.
Corruption - The act of corrupting, or state of being corrupt or putrid; the destruction of the natural form of bodies, by the separation of the component parts, or by disorganization, in the process of putrefaction.
b. seduction - the act or crime of persuading; the act of seducing or of enticing from the path of duty.
c. beguilement - state of being buguiled.
Beguile - To delude; to deceive; to impose on by artifice or craft.
d. enmity - The quality of being an enemy; the opposite of friendship; ill will; hatred; unfriendly dispositions; malevolence. It expresses more than aversion and less than malice, and differs from displeasure in denoting a fixed or rooted hatred, whereas displeasure is more transient.
D. What should be the right ambition for all of us:
1. Our GODly ambition should be:
a. to live quietly and peacefully
b. to mind your own affairs or business
c. to work with your own hands
1 Thessalonians 4:11 (Amplified Bible)
To make it your ambition and definitely endeavor to live quietly and peacefully, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we charged you,
2. Examples of people in the bible with good ambition:
a. Apostle Paul's ambition to preach GOD's Words
Romans 15:20 (Amplified Bible)
Thus my ambition has been to preach the Gospel, not where Christ’s name has already been known, lest I build on another man’s foundation;
E. How to avoid falling into Eve's syndrome?
1. Submit to GOD
2. Resist the devil
3. Treat GOD as husband
4. Treat GOD as master
James 4:7 (Amplified Bible)
So be subject to God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you.
1 Peter 2:18 (Amplified Bible)
[You who are] household servants, be submissive to your masters with all [proper] respect, not only to those who are kind and considerate and reasonable, but also to those who are surly (overbearing, unjust, and crooked).
Isaiah 54:15 (Amplified Bible)
Behold, they may gather together and stir up strife, but it is not from Me. Whoever stirs up strife against you shall fall and surrender to you.
IX. CONCLUSION:
GOD is our Husband, to love and submit ourselves from.
Isaiah 54:15 (Amplified Bible)
Behold, they may gather together and stir up strife, but it is not from Me. Whoever stirs up strife against you shall fall and surrender to you.
