Trinity Sunday Year C Children's Sermon
May 26, 2013
Good morning. I am happy to see you here this morning. Today I want to talk with you about a special kind of treasure hunt. How many of you have been on a treasure hunt or something similar like maybe an Easter Egg hunt? Wow just about everyone. So you know how it works. You need to find various things and you are told where to look. Sometimes you can find things real easy and sometimes it is not so easy but the fun come from looking. Would it be much fun if you found every thing the first minute all together at the first place you looked. Not really --the game would be over too soon.
I like to think about Bible study as a big life long treasure hunt. It is a treasure hunt that never ends and should be done by everyone all their lives. The Bible is God’s word for us and is the place to learn about how Jesus died to save us. We learn as we read about God and His love for us. We learn about God. Today we are celebrating The Festival of the Holy Trinity. This is one of the treasures of the Bible. No where is this word found in the Bible but this teaching is found in in the Bible. The word means there are three parts. To us it means there is only one God but there are three persons who are all God. Confused? Let me try to explain. You all know Jesus. Jesus is God. Jesus talks about His Father. His Father is God. And Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God. But, there is one God not three. This is the Trinity. We worship our God who is called Triune -- Meaning that there are three persons but one God.
This mystery is found in many places in the Bible. One place is in the Book of John.
Jesus is speaking He says: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Jesus the, second person of the Trinity also called the Son, is speaking about the Father - the first person of the Trinity -- about sending the Holy spirit - The third person of the Trinity - who will live in our hearts. This is difficult to understand for all of us sometimes.
Another place where this is found in the Bible is when Jesus was baptized.
When Jesus (The Son) went up from the water the heavens were opened and the Spirit of God (The Holy Spirit) came down and rested on him. Then a voice from heaven (The Father) spoke and said “this is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.”
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, all present together just like they are here today when we worship in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and make the sign of the cross as a reminder of our baptisms..
