John 4:21-24
Introduction
Last week, we looked at the first part of What is God Like?
We looked at the first 7 of 13 characteristics or character traits of What God is like
We saw that…
1. GOD IS PERSONAL
• Intelligence – several verses…just a couple here
• Emotions
• Self-determining will
2. GOD WAS FLESH
• He knew what it was like to live like a man…struggles of the flesh
3. GOD IS SPIRIT
• Jesus taught us that God cannot be contained or limited by physical forms or buildings
4. GOD IS ETERNAL
• It is mind boggling to think that God has always existed
5. GOD IS ALL-KNOWING – (Omniscient)
• He knows all things past, present, and future
• His knowledge is not hindered by locked doors, darkness, or distant places
6. GOD IS ALL-POWERFUL – (Omnipotent)
• He can do anything He chooses to do
• No army, no government, or civilization can frustrate His purposes
7. GOD IS PRESENT EVERYWHERE – (Omnipresent)
• No matter where you go in the Universe…God is there
This morning, we will look at the last 6 of the character traits of God so that we can truly have a better understanding of Him when we worship Him
Pray
Trans: The next character trait about what God is like is that…
8. GOD IS SOVEREIGN
The word SOVEREIGN means “independent; self-governing; and not ruled by any other entity”
Regardless of the current situation; regardless of the turmoil, confusion or chaos in our world
The God we worship is One who does all things according to His own will and purpose…He is independent and not ruled by any other entity
• Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from long ago what is not yet done, saying: My plan will take place, and I will do all My will.
• Dan 4:35 All the inhabitants of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does what He wants with the army of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth. There is no one who can hold back His hand or say to Him, “What have You done?”
• Eph 1:11 We have also received an inheritance in Him, predestined according to the purpose of the One who works out everything in agreement with the decision of His will
He is, has been, and always will be in control of all of history…He is Sovereign
9. GOD IS UNCHANGING
In His character, in His ability, in His purpose…God never changes
• Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever
He has never been nor ever will be less good, less loving, less true, or less powerful
The God that Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob worshipped and relied upon is the same God we worship and rely upon…He is unchanging
10. GOD IS GOOD
God is always good…no matter our nature of sin…no matter how depraved mankind is…no matter how badly our character deteriorates
God’s character is always and forever will be good
• Psa 34:8 Taste and see that the LORD is good…
Because of His goodness, He gives blessings and joy to His creation
• Psa 145:9 The LORD is good to everyone; His compassion rests on all He has made
• Jam 1:17 Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…
His goodness to us should cause us to offer our praise to Him
11. GOD IS FAITHFUL, RIGHTEOUS & JUST
God is faithful to fulfill His promises and keep His covenant
• 1 Cor 1:9 God is faithful; you were called by Him into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord
He is faithful to love us in spite of our unfaithfulness to Him
• Ex 34:6 Then the Lord passed in front of him and proclaimed: Yahweh is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in faithful love and truth
• Psa 98:3 He has remembered His love and faithfulness to the house of Israel…
He deals fairly with all His creation…justice is served without partiality
• Duet 32:4 The Rock—His work is perfect; all His ways are entirely just. A faithful God, without prejudice, He is righteous and true
Because of His perfect knowledge, love, and holiness, He is perfectly just

• Mark 12:14 …Teacher we know You are truthful and defer to no one…
He is the One True God
• Jer 10:10 Yahweh is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King
• 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and given us understanding so that we may know the true One. We are in the True One—that is in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life
In Him there is only truth and no lies…Whatever He says is true
• Num 23:19 God is not a man who lies…
• Psa 119:160 The entirety of Your word is truth…
• John 3:33 The one who has accepted His testimony has affirmed that God is true
Because He is truthful…we can trust Him and all of His promises and principles
13. GOD IS HOLY
He is completely free of any moral defect, compromise, or contamination
• Ex 15:11 Lord who is like You among the gods. Who is like You, glorious in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders?
• Lev 19:2 Speak to the Israelites community and tell them: Be holy because I, Yahweh your God, am holy
