A. Authors: uncertain, but the name connected with the songs are collectors instead of authors.

D. To whom written: Sometimes to GOD or author (collector) himself.
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. In the multitude of our thoughts
"In the multitude of my [anxious] thoughts within me"
The word "thoughts" came from the root Hebrew word of "opinions" meaning divided, sentiment, opinion, choices

Elijah approached the people and said, “How long will you not decide between two *choices*? If the Lord is the true God, follow him, but if Baal is the true God, follow him!“ But the people said nothing.
That's why we choose GOD, we actively choose GOD and as often as we can we choose GOD to give us joy, we actively search for GOD as cause for our joy if not, we have chosen the enemy.
B. GOD comforts our soul

1. GOD is our Comforter
2 Corinthians 1:4-5 (Amplified Bible)
Who comforts (consoles and encourages) us in every trouble (calamity and affliction), so that we may also be able to comfort (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, with the comfort (consolation and encouragement) with which we ourselves are comforted (consoled and encouraged) by God.
For just as Christ’s [own] sufferings fall to our lot [as they overflow upon His disciples, and we share and experience them] abundantly, so through Christ comfort (consolation and encouragement) is also [shared and experienced] abundantly by us.
2. Definitions of comforts
Comforts means compassion, consolation, encouragement, happiness, joy.
1 Peter 1:7-8 (Amplified Bible)
So that [the genuineness] of your faith may be tested, [your faith] which is infinitely more precious than the perishable gold which is tested and purified by fire. [This proving of your faith is intended] to redound to [your] praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) is revealed.

GOD comfort us thru His Love.

Such hope never disappoints or deludes or shames us, for God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us.
We enjoy GOD's love, GOD's Presence, GOD's Glory, that's how we find comforts in our soul.
3. Our soul
GOD comforts our soul not the spirit, not the body.
The word "soul" came from the Hebrew word:"nephesh (pronounce as "neh-fesh")" meaning heart, mind, self, "breathing creature", so soul means our mind, emotions (desire, contented (ability to be content, desire, happiness), will and heart.
Our happiness or inner joy can only be found in the LORD GOD not on the things of this world.

Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.
