KEEP ON WALKING
TEXT: Deuteronomy 13:4 (KJV), "Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him,
and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and
cleave unto him."
INTRODUCTION: The word Deuteronomy means second law. The word remember
is one of the key words of the book. It is mentioned 14 times.
Deuteronomy is a review of the laws of Sinai for the new generation.
The old complaining and disobedient generation of wilderness
wanderers had died out before entering Canaan.
Our text gives several commands from God: "Walk after the Lord,"
"fear him," keep His commandments," "obey His voice," "serve
Him," and "cleave unto Him." The word cleave means cling, adhere,
pursue hard, and take.
THEME: We must remember God's blessings, our commitments to, and our hope in
Jesus the Christ.
I. Walk after the Lord your God
A. Who or What are we walking after?
1. lord Satan
2. lord Disrupter (John 10:10a)
3. lord Riches/ Worldly Fame/ Un-Biblical Physical Pleasures
B. Some lukewarm carnal Christians walking after
1. prosperity gospel
2. ear-tickling messages
3. ecumenical/all roads lead to heaven theories
C. True, Bona-fide, God pleasing, Blood washed Saints are walking after
1. The Lord our God (1 Timothy 2:5)
2. One who will never leave us or forsake us (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5)
3. One who will build us up in the most Holy Faith (Jude verse 20)
4. One who will heal (Psalm 103:3), restore (Matthew 17:11), renew (Revelation 21:5)
II. Fear Him (The Lord Jesus Christ)
A. Be awestruck
B. Be in reverence
C. Humble ourselves before Him
D. Never forget who He is
E. Never forget what He has done for us
F. Never take Him for granted (Consider the narrative about Achan and the city of AI
in Joshua Chapter Seven.)
III. Keep His Commandments
A. Love God (Psalm 18:1) with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength.
B. Love thy neighbor as thyself (compare 1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
C. Mark 12:33 declares that the above kind of love is more than all whole burnt
offerings and sacrifices.
D. These commandments can be obeyed only through God's help and the power
of the Holy Spirit (Philippians 4:13).
IV. Obey His Voice
A. As Jesus Christ - "Nevertheless" (Matthew 26:39)
B. As Ruth - "whither thou goest" (Ruth 1:16)
C. As Paul - "Lord what will Thou have me do?" (Acts 9:6)
D. As Joshua - "...as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15)
E. As Samuel - "...to obey is better than sacrifice, ..." (1 Samuel 15:22)
F. As Isaiah - "Here am I, send me" (Isaiah 6:8)
V. Serve Him
A. As Job - "though He slay me, yet will I trust Him" (Job 13:15)
B. As the three Hebrews - "in the fire" (Daniel 3:24, 25)
C. As Elijah - in famine (1 Kings 18)
D. As Moses - in the riches of Egypt (Hebrews 11:26)
E. As Daniel - in the king's court (Daniel 2:48)
VI. Cling to Him
A. We are still on the subject of maintaining an approved walk with the Lord.
B. Through it all, trust in Jesus the Christ. Look to Jesus as the Author and
Finisher of our faith. Hold to God's unchanging hand.
C. The story is told of a man overboard in a raging sea at the midnight hour.
The method of his rescue was by way of a rope tossed to him by his
shipmates.
Once safely on board the seafaring vessel it was noticed that he had gripped
the rope so tightly that portions of the rope were embedded in his hand.
Conclusion: As an old song says, "We've got to keep on walking in the light of the Lord."
We must endure to the end. Our rewards are just ahead. We shall soon stand
with the mighty host and receive our crowns.
Oh! To see Jesus as He is and hear Him say, "...Well done thou good and faith-
ful servant:..." (Matthew 25:21)
