WHY would anyone do this?
Could it be that they knew something?
Could it be that she could face death with courage because she knew Jesus was risen?

Afterwards, his wife Elisabeth went to work among them and had great success, leading some of the very ones who had killed her husband to Christ.
WHY? What kind of courage did this take? Where do you get the courage to believe something so strongly that you wouldn’t change your mind even for death?

But he stood firm.
WHY? Where does that kind of courage come from?

The proconsul then said to him, "I have wild beasts at hand; to these will I cast you, unless you repent." But he answered, "Call them then, for we are not accustomed to repent of what is good in order to adopt that which is evil…” But again the proconsul said to him, "I will cause you to be consumed by fire, seeing you despise the wild beasts, if you will not repent." But Polycarp said, "You threaten me with fire which burns for an hour, and after a little is extinguished, but are ignorant of the fire of the coming judgment and of eternal punishment, reserved for the ungodly. But why do you tarry? Bring forth what you will."
Eighty and six years have I served him and he has done me no wrong…
WHY? Where do you get that kind of courage?
What would you die for?
These people knew something. They knew that there was a Jesus who they were serving had already been to death and had conquered it, and then promised that they would conquer it too… that He would prepare a place for them.
Paul – 69 AD
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.

How could Paul say that? Well, it was all based on the foundation of what Paul believed.
Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols.
17 So he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present.
18 And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him. Some were saying, "What would this idle babbler wish to say?" Others, "He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities," --because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.
19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is which you are proclaiming?
20 "For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; so we want to know what these things mean."
21 (Now all the Athenians and the strangers visiting there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)
22 So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects.
23 "For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.' Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.
24 "The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands;
25 nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;
26 and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,
27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;
28 for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.'
29 "Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man.
30 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,
31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."
Three possible responses:
1. Some people condemn.
32 ΒΆ Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer,
2. Some people are curious.
but others said, "We shall hear you again concerning this."
3. Some people convert.
34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

HOW WOULD YOU LIVE if you knew that Jesus had really lived a sinless life, really died on the Cross in your place, and really rose from the dead?
You could face uncertainty…
You could face hatred and rejection…
You could face sickness…
You could face death…
You could face being fired… or hired…
