Foolishness of Rehoboam
Character Study of Rehoboam

B. Traditional writer: Prophet Jeremiah
C. Common expression: "as David his father" occurred 9 times
D. Who is Rehoboam?
1. Father: King Solomon (1 Kings 11:43)
1 Kings 11:43 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
When he died, he was buried in the City of David, named for his father. Then his son Rehoboam became the next king.
2. Mother: Naamah, an Ammonite woman (1 Kings 14:31)
1 Kings 14:31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
When Rehoboam died, he was buried among his ancestors in the City of David. His mother was Naamah, an Ammonite woman. Then his son Abijam became the next king.
3. Grandfather: King David (1 Kings 2:1)
1 Kings 2:1 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
As the time of King David’s death approached, he gave this charge to his son Solomon:
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. Where did King Rehoboam got his foolishness?
His grandfather is King David, symbolizing grace and his father is King Solomon, symbolizing peacefulness, wisdom, foolishness and love, most probably from his father, King Solomon, but then again, we know now what is the background of King Rehoboam, now let's see his character.
"But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men"
1 Kings 12:8-9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers.
“What is your advice?” he asked them. “How should I answer these people who want me to lighten the burdens imposed by my father?”
Rehoboam's Character:
1. Self-confident - rejected the advice of the older men (2 Chronicles 32:8, Psalms 60:11, Psalms 108:12)
He consulted with older men and younger men, but all men, he forgot to consult with GOD.
2 Chronicles 32:8 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
He may have a great army, but they are merely men. We have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles for us!” Hezekiah’s words greatly encouraged the people.
Psalms 60:11 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless.
Psalms 108:12 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless.
Human effort are all useless, only Divine effort counts.
John 15:5 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
2. Fool - according to his father's proverbs, he's a fool.
Proverbs 17:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Foolish children bring grief to their father and bitterness to the one who gave them birth.
Proverbs 19:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
A foolish child is a calamity to a father; a quarrelsome wife is as annoying as constant dripping.
Most probably, when King Solomon was writing Proverbs 17 and 19, he had his mind on his son.
3. Short-sighted - he only trusted those who lived with him, his own age.
Psalms 49:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
This is the fate of fools, though they are remembered as being wise. Interlude
Proverbs 12:15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others.
1 Kings 12:8 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the older men and instead asked the opinion of the young men who had grown up with him and were now his advisers.
King Rehoboam forgot to ask himself the question, "Who is wiser than me?" my father King Solomon is. But his father was dead, so he can only trust the people who outlived with his father and his father's advisers.
4. Trusts in himself (Deuteronomy 17:18-20)
It was never recorded that he trusted GOD, nor the Pentateuch books near his throne to be read everyday.
Deuteronomy 17:18-20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.
He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees.
This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.
"And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel."
and yet he only reigned 3 days.
1 Kings 12:12 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to hear Rehoboam’s decision, just as the king had ordered.
The kingdom was never divided only later, after 3 days, it was divided because King Rehoboam's attitude is not to consult GOD in his decisions.
Isaiah 45:21 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Consult together, argue your case. Get together and decide what to say. Who made these things known so long ago? What idol ever told you they would happen? Was it not I, the Lord? For there is no other God but me, a righteous God and Savior. There is none but me.
5. Self-confident - almost conceited.
Proverbs 27:24 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
for riches don’t last forever, and the crown might not be passed to the next generation.
Proverbs 28:26 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Those who trust their own insight are foolish, but anyone who walks in wisdom is safe.
Psalms 127:1-2 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.
It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.
King Solomon knew he built the kingdom and the temple, but in his heart, he knew also that without the LORD, the work of the builders is wasted.
Let the LORD build your house or any project, let the LORD protect everything you own, let the LORD work for you and you "rest" spiritually in His love. Not your own effort, human effort which is useless, but GOD's Divine effort in or thru you.
6. In 3 days, gave the 10 tribes away.
Two decades of kingship, his grandfather and father, and yet in 3 days, he threw it all away. His father, King Solomon never expected King Rehoboam to be king after him, so he never prepared him for the kingship. Besides, the first wife of King Solomon was an Egyptian not an Ammonite, so he was caught unaware of the situation. But the bible is silent about it. So in King Solomon's mind, the next king will come from an Egyptian queen not an Ammonite slave woman.
1 Kings 3:1 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and married one of his daughters. He brought her to live in the City of David until he could finish building his palace and the Temple of the Lord and the wall around the city.
1 Kings 14:31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
When Rehoboam died, he was buried among his ancestors in the City of David. His mother was Naamah, an Ammonite woman. Then his son Abijam became the next king.
B. By his freewill, he rejected the advice of the older men who advised his father, King Solomon and took the advice of the younger men who grown up with him.
Proverbs 28:26 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Those who trust their own insight are foolish, but anyone who walks in wisdom is safe.
The bible has many names for you, if the bible named someone wise, then he is wise, in GOD's sight that person is wise, but unfortunately King Rehoboam was named foolish so he was foolish. King Rehoboam never walked in the wisdom of his father, King Solomon after all his father wrote 3 books, namely: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. After King Solomon died, he has treasures of books to give away to his sons but since King Solomon spent his first half of his life in wisdom then his second half in foolishness, worshiping about 1000+ idols, he never prepared any of his son to be the next king. So it ended up in tragedy.
1 Kings 11:1-4 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites.
The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, ‘You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.’ Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.
He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord.
In Solomon’s old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the Lord his God, as his father, David, had been.
Proverbs 19:10 (New Century Version)
A fool should not live in luxury. A slave should not rule over princes.
And yet, son of a slave woman an Ammonited ruled over his kingdom and afterwards, like father, like son, Jeroboam ruled over King Rehoboam.
1 Kings 11:26 (New Century Version)
Jeroboam son of Nebat was one of Solomon’s officers. He was an Ephraimite from the town of Zeredah, and he was the son of a widow named Zeruah. Jeroboam turned against the king.
1 Kings 14:31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
When Rehoboam died, he was buried among his ancestors in the City of David. His mother was Naamah, an Ammonite woman. Then his son Abijam became the next king.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Trust GOD, lean on Him. He will accomplish greater things in your life. There's no you, there's only GOD.
John 15:5 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
John 14:12 (New King James Version)
"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
Colossians 1:27 (New King James Version)
To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
James 4:6 (New Century Version)
But God gives us even more grace, as the Scripture says, “God is against the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.“
Proverbs 3:34 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
The Lord mocks the mockers but is gracious to the humble.
