I. EXORDIUM:
Our knowledge of the Holy One and wisdom can't save us from being faithless and unfaithful, it's only the LORD GOD who is faithful.
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believer
III. OBJECTIVES:
To show there's only One Faithful, that is GOD, thru the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
IV. TEXT:
1 Kings 2:4 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
If you do this, then the LORD will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’
V. THESIS:
GOD is faithful and we're faithless inspite of knowledge and wisdom combined, we can't help ourselves, only GOD can.
VI. TITLE:
LORD is faithful were not
VII. EXPLICATION:
A. 1 Kings - second in a series of three double books: 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, and 1 & 2 Chronicles, originally they were single books Samuel, Kings and Chronicles, the Septuagint translators made the division
The Septuagint translators were the ones who made the divisions, and they did so more or less for the convenience of the reader.—Source:
J. Vernon McGee's Thru The Bible
B. Traditional writer: Prophet Jeremiah
C. Common expression: "as David his father" occurred 9 times
D. Place in the Bible: History of the kings, reveals the decline and fall of the kingdom
1. first the kingdom was divided
2. each kingdom fell
E. Moral teaching: to show man his inability to rule himself and the world.
If King Saul symbolized the law and his son Jonathan symbolized knowledge.
King David symbolized grace and his son Solomon symbolized wisdom. (application of knowledge)
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. GOD fulfilled His promises to King David
"If you do this, then the LORD will keep the promise he made to me. He told me,"
B. All the terms of the covenant have been violated
"He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul,"
Although King David is a man after GOD's own heart and in his time during the Old testament king, David practised the principles of grace in his life, and it's clear that his son King Solomon is replacing him and his kingship is under the principles of the law of Moses.
1 Kings 2:3 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go.
and yet we find King Solomon violating every Guidelines for the king set forth by GOD thru Moses:
Deuteronomy 17:14-20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“You are about to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you. When you take it over and settle there, you may think, ‘We should select a king to rule over us like the other nations around us.’
If this happens, be sure to select as king the man the Lord your God chooses. You must appoint a fellow Israelite; he may not be a foreigner.
“The king must not build up a large stable of horses for himself or send his people to Egypt to buy horses, for the Lord has told you, ‘You must never return to Egypt.’
The king must not take many wives for himself, because they will turn his heart away from the Lord. And he must not accumulate large amounts of wealth in silver and gold for himself.
“When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.
He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees.
This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel.
1. Let's enumerate the violations of King Solomon:
a. "The king must not build up a large stable of horses for himself"
1 Kings 4:26 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Solomon had 4,000 stalls for his chariot horses, and he had 12,000 horses.
b. "send his people to Egypt to buy horses, for the Lord has told you, ‘You must never return to Egypt.’ "
1 Kings 3:1 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and married one of his daughters. He brought her to live in the City of David until he could finish building his palace and the Temple of the Lord and the wall around the city.
Solomon did not only went down to Egypt but married the daughter of the Pharaoh of Egypt making him his father-in-law. It's forbidden to trust again to Egypt because Egypt symbolizes the world and a false refuge. Don't love the world. All human help is useless and GOD does not want us trust in the arms of flesh, even much more to the world but only to trust Him as our source of everything in our lives. We look to Him as our Provider, Jehovah Jireh.
1 John 2:15-17 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.
For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
Isaiah 30:1-2 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,” says the Lord. “You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins.
For without consulting me, you have gone down to Egypt for help. You have put your trust in Pharaoh’s protection. You have tried to hide in his shade.
Ezekiel 29:16 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“Then Israel will no longer be tempted to trust in Egypt for help. Egypt’s shattered condition will remind Israel of how sinful she was to trust Egypt in earlier days. Then Israel will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.”
Psalms 108:12-13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Oh, please help us against our enemies, for all human help is useless.
With God’s help we will do mighty things, for he will trample down our foes.
Philippians 4:19 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
c. "The king must not take many wives for himself, because they will turn his heart away from the Lord."
1 Kings 11:1-3 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites.
The Lord had clearly instructed the people of Israel, ‘You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.’ Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.
He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord.
Wow 700 wives, isn't one enough?
d. "And he must not accumulate large amounts of wealth in silver and gold for himself."
1 Kings 10:14-21 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Each year Solomon received about 25 tons of gold.
This did not include the additional revenue he received from merchants and traders, all the kings of Arabia, and the governors of the land.
King Solomon made 200 large shields of hammered gold, each weighing more than fifteen pounds.
He also made 300 smaller shields of hammered gold, each weighing nearly four pounds. The king placed these shields in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.
Then the king made a huge throne, decorated with ivory and overlaid with fine gold.
The throne had six steps and a rounded back. There were armrests on both sides of the seat, and the figure of a lion stood on each side of the throne.
There were also twelve other lions, one standing on each end of the six steps. No other throne in all the world could be compared with it!
All of King Solomon’s drinking cups were solid gold, as were all the utensils in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon. They were not made of silver, for silver was considered worthless in Solomon’s day!
25 tons of gold eacy year, and all of his drinking cups were solid gold. Luxuries of luxury that's why he himself said all are vanity or meaningless, even all his wealth.
Ecclesiastes 1:2 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!”
e. "When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. "
"He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees.
This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel."
There's no record whatsoever that King Solomon had it copied, but we see him writing. We see he has written lots of psalms and poems but there's no record that shows he kept a copy of the law for himself and that he reads it everyday. We see King Solomon praying for the Temple but no reading from the law was recorded.
C. GOD remains Faithful even we're faithless or unfaithful to Him
"one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel."
1 Kings 2:4 (New Century Version)
And if you obey the Lord, he will keep the promise he made to me. He said: ’If your descendants live as I tell them and have complete faith in me, a man from your family will always be king over the people of Israel.’
"a man from your family will always be king over the people of Israel.’ "
and even if we know now that King Solomon has perfected his violations of the terms of the covenant set forth by GOD for the king, GOD is still Faithful, because that "man from your family" is the LORD JESUS CHRIST who is both KING of kings and LORD of lords. He never failed any of His promises to King David, that's why the LORD JESUS CHRIST is called Son of David too.
Isaiah 9:6-7 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
1 Thessalonians 5:24 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful.
2 Timothy 2:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Only GOD the Father is Faithful and the LORD JESUS CHRIST fulfilled every terms of the covenant set forth by the Father, so in CHRIST we have fulfilled the law, apart from GOD we are nothing. There's no faithful humans but only GOD is Faithful, therefore trust in GOD's Faithfulness to carry us thru and not man's unfaithfulness and faithlessness.
