Greedy eyes!
Numbers 11:6”but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!"
Jesus talks a lot about guarding our eyes because it happens to be the door for our body! Jesus said: “The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.” (Luke 11:34) What you watch is important!
God showered ‘manna’ for the Israelites everyday and filled their tummy with good, nourishing food; yet these people felt bored of being fed with manna everyday, hence they complained, ‘there is nothing at all except this manna!’ This seems to be a callous attitude of the people of God! Let me give you a reason for this belligerent attitude: they were accustomed to the blessings that they received everyday. Agree? If you are made to starve for ten days then you would appreciate the manna – even a piece of plain bread would be delicious for a starved man. Many of us are like these fatted people of Israel who complain: I am fed up of this job or how long can I put up with my quarrelsome husband, or how long can I tolerate my neighbor, I’m so fat or I’m so thin…. and much more…..of such silly things. What if you do not have a family, wife, husband or job? THINK! We are truly ungrateful! Aren’t we?? We got to be abandoned in an Amazon forest or made to stay in Somalia to appreciate God’s blessings.
I have seen worst wastage in the villages of Tamil Nadu and most important in fasting prayer meetings; the pastor slogs to feed his congregation during the fasting prayer meetings but the members throw away the plates with food. I have shed tears at this pathetic scene! We have got used to blessings! We would appreciate our church, our choir, our pastor and the plethora of prayer meetings that happens in some of the metropolitan cities, if only we visit certain areas of our country, where there is severe opposition for spread of the Gospel.
A three year old girl from our school saw me having coffee and asked me for it, she asked: ‘chayya, chayya’, I gave her a small cup of coffee, then she asked, ‘bikki’, I dug for a biscuit and gave it to her. Very professionally she dipped the biscuit into the chayya and ate it; but she did something that brought tears to my eyes; with a twinkle in her eyes, she kept saying, ‘thanku, thanku… ’ with tea dripping down her mouth. She comes from a very poor family with her mom and dad working as garbage cleaners. She at this tender age certainly knew the value of tea and biscuits. I sure learnt a lot from my school kids, as I watch them relish the vegetables that I serve and give me a ‘content and happy’ look, while normally kids make a fuss over eating vegetables. Bro Stanley said: “Even a brief stay with missionaries in remote places will drive away from us murmuring of all sorts. Working with the poorest of the poor fills us with a spirit of gratitude and thankfulness for God's manifold blessings in our lives.”
