I. EXORDIUM:
Glory to me or Glory to GOD?
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believers
III. OBJECTIVES:
To show GOD owned the Glory not us.
IV. TEXT:
2 Samuel 5:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
So David did what the Lord commanded, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
V. THESIS:
GOD owns the glories not us.
VI. TITLE:
Victories From The LORD Part 1
VII. EXPLICATION:
A. Another name: Second Book of the Kings
B. Coverage: 40 years
C. Writer: Most probably prophet Natan, King David or King Solomon because prophet Samuel was already dead.
VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. Obedience of King David
1. First, he consulted the LORD (2 Sam 5:19)
2 Samuel 5:19 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
So David asked the Lord, “Should I go out to fight the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?” The Lord replied to David, “Yes, go ahead. I will certainly hand them over to you.”
Consulting the LORD in everything makes Him very important in your life, not only in one area, but all the areas of our lives, GOD needs to be consulted. Consult the LORD not the idols, or any fortune tellers but only the LORD.
2 Kings 1:2-4 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
One day Israel’s new king, Ahaziah, fell through the latticework of an upper room at his palace in Samaria and was seriously injured. So he sent messengers to the temple of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether he would recover.
But the angel of the Lord told Elijah, who was from Tishbe, “Go and confront the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is there no God in Israel? Why are you going to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether the king will recover?
Now, therefore, this is what the Lord says: You will never leave the bed you are lying on; you will surely die.’” So Elijah went to deliver the message.
2. He obeyed GOD's command (2 Sam 5:20)
2 Samuel 5:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
So David went to Baal-perazim and defeated the Philistines there. “The Lord did it!” David exclaimed. “He burst through my enemies like a raging flood!” So he named that place Baal-perazim (which means “the Lord who bursts through”).
Revelation 3:10 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“Because you have obeyed my command to persevere, I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong to this world.
Obeying the LORD's commands is not for Him but it's for our own good.
3. He acknowledged GOD's methods (2 Sam 5:20)
He acknowledged GOD and not himself or else he will be complacent like King Nebuchadnezzar. Don't wait for GOD to intervene. Give GOD the glories due Him not ourselves. It's not us, but it's His own doing. No glory-to-me but glory to GOD.
Daniel 4:26-27 (New Century Version)
“Since the stump of the tree and its roots were left in the ground, your kingdom will be given back to you when you learn that one in heaven rules your kingdom.
So, O king, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Stop doing wicked things and be kind to the poor. Then you might continue to be successful.“
Daniel 4:34-37 (New Century Version)
At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up toward heaven, and I could think normally again! Then I gave praise to the Most High God; I gave honor and glory to him who lives forever. God’s rule is forever, and his kingdom continues for all time.
People on earth are not truly important. God does what he wants with the powers of heaven and the people on earth. No one can stop his powerful hand or question what he does.
At that time I could think normally again, and God gave back my great honor and power and returned the glory to my kingdom. The people who advised me and the royal family came to me for help again. I became king again and was even greater and more powerful than before.
Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, give praise and honor and glory to the King of heaven. Everything he does is right and fair, and he is able to make proud people humble.
Psalms 115:1 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.
B. David listened to GOD in detail
1. GOD gave strategies to King David (2 Sam 5:23)
2 Samuel 5:23 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
And again David asked the Lord what to do. “Do not attack them straight on,” the Lord replied. “Instead, circle around behind and attack them near the poplar trees.
From a human standpoint, you will be interested to talk to a person that seems interested in what you're saying compared to a person that sleeps every time you talk to him/her. It's the same with GOD, because GOD is a Person too, wants to communicate His ideas to King David and since King David is very interested in the details of what GOD is saying to Him, GOD revealed more to Him, even the war strategies, saying the fact that He was in charge of the war not King David so He needs to attack first and then He must follow GOD. So it would appear that victories of King David are man-made but King David know it full well that it was not Him but GOD who brought the victories.
1 Samuel 17:47 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”
C. Result: Complete victory over Philistines (2 Sam 5:25, Heb 5:8, Jn 17:19)
"he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer."
2 Samuel 5:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
So David did what the Lord commanded, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
Hebrews 5:8 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered.
John 17:19 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.
Completion of war can only be seen in one proof, that is if you win the war, as it's depicted here, that King David not only defeated the Philistines in one place, but defeated them in several places and to make it more harder, he defeated them in all their territories. GOD will bring to completion the victories He started in us thru the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
Philippians 1:6 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Wheever we're successful and victorious in our lives, acknowledged GOD, remember it's by His Grace, we are successful and victorious and we owe it all to Him not to ourselves.
1 Corinthians 15:10 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favor on me—and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace.
