A. Authors: Samuel (Israel's last greatest judge) - some parts of it, Nathan and Gad (1 Samuel 10:25, 1 Chronicles 29:29) and some say it's Anonymous

1 Samuel 10:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then Samuel told the people what the rights and duties of a king were. He wrote them down on a scroll and placed it before the Lord. Then Samuel sent the people home again.

1 Chronicles 29:29 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

All the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in The Record of Samuel the Seer, The Record of Nathan the Prophet, and The Record of Gad the Seer.

B. Purpose of writing: Account of the history of Israel from 12th to 10th B.C.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

King Saul symbolizes the law, while King David symbolizes Grace and Jonathan, the friend of King David symbolizes knowledge.

A. Don't be afraid

"“Don’t be afraid,” Jonathan reassured him." - imagine Knowledge encouraging Grace.

1. Fear paralyzes

1 John 4:18 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.

Hebrews 2:15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

2 Timothy 1:7 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

Actually, GOD wants our reverential fear towards Him alone and not to anyone or anything.

Revelation 19:5 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And from the throne came a voice that said, “Praise our God, all his servants, all who fear him, from the least to the greatest.”

Revelation 15:4 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Who will not fear you, Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous deeds have been revealed.”

Revelation 14:7 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

“Fear God,” he shouted. “Give glory to him. For the time has come when he will sit as judge. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all the springs of water.”

1 Peter 2:17 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Respect everyone, and love your Christian brothers and sisters. Fear God, and respect the king.

1 Peter 1:17 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time as “foreigners in the land.”

2. Faith will not operate in fear.

Ephesians 3:12 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.

Luke 8:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”

John 12:42 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.

Because of the Pharisee afraid of the people, they can't confess their faith in CHRIST, which if we can remember faith has to do with our confession. Fear paralyzed these believing Pharisees.

1 John 4:15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

All who confess that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God.

Mark 8:38 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

.. but will work in holy fear (reverential fear towards GOD

Hebrews 11:7 (New International Version)

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

B. What you fear will not happen to you.

"My father will never find you!"

1. Since Jonathan knows very well that King David was anointed king by Samuel so he reassured David about this fact.

1 Samuel 16:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

2. If GOD wanted King Saul to kill King David, His promises to David will not happen, that is, David is the man after GOD's own heart.

1 Samuel 15:28 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to someone else—one who is better than you.

Even King Saul admitted this fact before David:

1 Samuel 24:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And now I realize that you are surely going to be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will flourish under your rule.

1 Samuel 13:14 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”

C. You will be king of Israel.

"You are going to be the king of Israel"

It's a fact, David was anointed as king of Israel to replace King Saul and not Jonathan. Jonathan accepted this fact

1. It's a knowledge of Jonathan based on the Word and the Prophets. It's commanded by GOD, and confirmed by the Holy Spirit, as the Holy Spirit left King Saul and came upon David powerfully. That's the way of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament opposite to His way in the New Testament.

1 Samuel 16:14 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and the Lord sent a tormenting spirit that filled him with depression and fear.

Acts 1:8 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 2:3-4 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.

And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

D. I'll be second to you.

"and I will be next to you"

1. If King Saul was only contented with being second like Jonathan or third, He would not have died. The only problem is he took his son Jonathan with him.

1 Samuel 31:6 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and his troops all died together that same day.

Hosea 4:6 (New International Version)

my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.

a. Lack of knowledge is not an excuse, we have the completed Bible today so we can study it. If you ignore knowledge of GOD's Words, then you'll die or be destroyed like King Saul denied his knowledge of King David as his replacement and never accepted it and wants to kill King David instead.

1 Samuel 20:30-31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Saul boiled with rage at Jonathan. “You stupid son of a whore!” he swore at him. “Do you think I don’t know that you want him to be king in your place, shaming yourself and your mother?

As long as that son of Jesse is alive, you’ll never be king. Now go and get him so I can kill him!”

2 Corinthians 12:9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

1 Peter 5:10 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.

2. It's a statement of knowledge but no application and not of faith, since we all know when worst comes to worst, Jonathan forgot about King David able and willing to help them with their battle with the Philistines but to my surprise and amazement, there's no application of knowledge , that is wisdom, coming from Jonathan, for he died, together with his brothers in the battle field together with law symbolized by his father,King Saul. If only Jonathan kept his faith and asked King David's help, they could be rescued by King David. Yes, pride stopped his father from asking help.

IX. CONCLUSION:

1 Corinthians 8:1 (New King James Version)

Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.

Jonathan symbolizing knowledge forgot all about King David, that King David loved him able and willing to rescue them both from this battle, but their pride kept them from asking King David. Knowledge is useless until it's retained as knowledge not as wisdom, which is the application of knowledge resulting in more love for the LORD because of His Gift of Grace.
