I. EXORDIUM:
It won't fit here, the comparison between grace and law. The key to understand this sermon, is it's simply a comparison of life of King David symbolizing grace and King Saul symbolizing law. If you want to research on it more, follow their lives and you'll see shadows of grace and law at play. Indeed one of the most shocking statement in the Bible, Fallen from grace is not when you sin terribly, fallen from grace is if you try on yourselves to be perfect through the law, we thought it's a good thing but you've fallen from grace.
II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:
Believers
III. OBJECTIVES:
To compare grace and law using the life of King David and King Saul as illustrations.
IV. TEXT:
Galatians 5:4 (Amplified Bible)
If you seek to be justified and declared righteous and to be given a right standing with God through the Law, you are brought to nothing and so separated (severed) from Christ. You have fallen away from grace (from God’s gracious favor and unmerited blessing).
V. THESIS:
King David pictures grace while King Saul pictures law.
VI. TITLE:
Grace vs. Law
VII. EXPLICATION:
A. Author: Apostle Paul
B. Audience: Churches of Galatia
C. Purposes of Writing:
1. To defend his apostolic authority
2. To counteract the evil influence of the Judaizers in Galatia
3. To give exhortation for the strengthening of Galatian believers in faith towards CHRIST and in the fruits of the Spirit

VIII. MAIN BODY:
A. Grace
1. Looks on the heart
Hebrews 13:9
Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by ceremonial foods, which are of no value to those who eat them.
2. Anointed by the Holy Spirit (All GOD not man)
1 Samuel 16:13
So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.
Hebrews 10:29Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings
3. On the move helping everyone
1 Samuel 17:15
but David went back and forth so he could help his father with the sheep in Bethlehem.
Romans 5:15
But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.
4. Uses Faith rather than five senses
1 Samuel 17:40
He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.
Romans 4:16
So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham’s. For Abraham is the father of all who believe.
5. Turns our experiences into good future for us acknowledging GOD
1 Samuel 17:36-37
I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the Lord be with you!”
Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
6. Respects and Gives Life and Freedom
1 Samuel 24:6-7
“The Lord knows I shouldn’t have done that to my lord the king,” he said to his men. “The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king and attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.” So David restrained his men and did not let them kill Saul. After Saul had left the cave and gone on his way,
Romans 6:14 Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.
Ephesians 1:7 He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.
B. Law
1. Looks on outward appearance
1 Samuel 16:7
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Matthew 12:38
One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority.”
2. Highlights man's effort
1 Samuel 17:13
Jesse’s three oldest sons—Eliab, Abinadab, and Shimea—had already joined Saul’s army to fight the Philistines.
Galatians 3:5-6I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.
In the same way, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”
3. Can't do anything, motivated in fear
1 Samuel 17:16
For forty days, every morning and evening, the Philistine champion strutted in front of the Israelite army.
Galatians 3:10
But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.”
4. Based on man's senses
1 Samuel 17:4-5
Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was over nine feet tall!
He wore a bronze helmet, and his bronze coat of mail weighed 125 pounds.
2 Corinthians 5:7
We live by faith, not by sight.
5. Struggles in what it sees and gives punishment
1 Samuel 17:38-39Then Saul gave David his own armor—a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. “I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again.
Romans 7:23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.
6. Kills and Results in Death
1 Samuel 20:31
As long as that son of Jesse is alive, you’ll never be king. Now go and get him so I can kill him!”
2 Corinthians 3:6
He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Choose to be under grace, rather than the law. For example, if we want to be rigtheous because of our efforts, that's keeping the law, opposite of looking to the finished work of CHRIST on the cross of calvary. It's not about us, it's all about GOD. Always choose life (grace)
Deuteronomy 30:19 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)
“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!
