SCRIPTURES:- Psalms 51, 2nd Samuel 11 – 12.
FOCUS VERSES:- Psalm 51:16-17:- “For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give [it]: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise”.
The purpose of this passage of scripture gives us the insight of what David felt after he had been confronted by Nathan after he (David) had committed adultery, conspiracy to murder, lying, and even theft of another man’s wife.
HISTORY: In 2nd Samuel 11 & 12 you will find the account of what David did and how Nathan confronts him on his actions and the punishment that God says will come his way because of the sin he committed. Psalms 51 is David’s prayer of repentance.
BACKGROUND:- It was the time that the Kings would go to war, but this time David sends Joab and his army but he decides not to go into battle. He stays at his palace while his army is out fighting. His first mistake was that he was out of place. Here is the King of all Israel and Judah and he is taking it easy while his army is fighting. The Bible says one night he rose off his bed and began to walk on his rooftop. While he was walking on his rooftop he noticed Bathsheba bathing in her courtyard. Bathsheba was a beautiful woman; the Bible says “the woman [was] very beautiful to look upon”. She was the wife of Uriah one of the members in his army.
David saw her and desired to have 2nd Samuel 11:4 says “And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house”.
In verse #5 the Bible says “And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I [am] with child”.
David then begins to try a work a master plan. He has Uriah sent from the battle field back to King David. David ask him how thing in the battle were going Uriah explains to him and David says well go home tonight and relax and be with your wife. In other words enjoy yourself tonight. Uriah refuses to go to his wife when his friends are fighting in a battle and stays the night on the porch of King’s house. The next morning David realizes that Uriah didn’t go and spend the night with his wife, who is pregnant by David. David again tries to hatch another plan of deception and he has Uriah stay yet another night and this time David gets Uriah drunk and tells Uriah to go home to his wife but Uriah refuse to enjoy the pleasures of life when his fellow soldiers are hot in battle, so Uriah spend the night again at the King’s door. When morning comes David realizes that Uriah didn’t go home to his wife. David knows now that his sin is going to be realized. He puts another plan into action and writes a letter to Joab the General of his army and says to place Uriah in the front of the battle and then withdraw from him so he will be killed by the enemy, then he sends the letter back with Uriah. Joab does as the king has requested and Uriah is killed. David then takes Bathsheba has his wife trying to cover up the sin that he had done.
In chapter 12 Nathan comes to David and tells David a story of Rich man and a Poor man. The rich man had many flocks of sheep and the poor man just had one little ewe lamb that he raised as one of his own daughters. When a traveler came to the rich man’s house instead of the rich man killing one of his many sheep he went and took the poor man’s little ewe lamb killed it and ate it. The Bible says as Nathan was telling this story to David that 2nd Samuel 12:5 “David's anger was greatly kindled against the man” and he even went as far as to say the man should die “and he said to Nathan, [As] the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this [thing] shall surely die”.
In verse #7 Nathan looks David right in the eye and says “David Thou [art] the man”. Then he begins to tell David what the Lord God has said.
WATCH THIS;- there are 5 things that Nathan tells him from the Lord. The number 5 in the Bible represents God’s Grace. “1. I anointed thee king over Israel, and 2. I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 3. And I gave thee thy master's house, 4. and thy master's wives into thy bosom, 5. and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; Then he tops it off with the cream on top of the cake 6. and if [that had been] too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things”. 5 = GRACE.
Then he says to David the Lord says verse #9 “Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife [to be] thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon”.
Verse #10 - #11 “Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give [them] unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun”.
Now I like to believe that David began to do some introspection and no doubt he asked himself how did I get here. I’m the king and I’m not supposed to be here. After all the stuff I have been through I can’t understand how I ended up here.
Have you ever ended up in a condition or situation that just boggled your mind. You couldn’t understand how you ended up here. You did everything you thought was right yet your marriage ended up in divorce court, your child ended up in jail, you fou8nd yourself standing in the welfare line. You were faithful in the relationship, monogamous to the core but when you went to the doctor they came back with a report that you have a venereal disease or HIV. You stand there in disbelief and wonder – How did I get Here!
You may have been on your way to becoming a lawyer, but woke up in the crack house – How did I get here! You gave up everything to make this relationship work and now it’s over and you find yourself all by yourself and you begin to wonder How did I get here!.
Sometimes we end up in places we never thought we would be and we have to ask the question how did I get here. I’m normally very happy but now I am struggling with depression How did I get here!.
I was talking with my mother not long ago about something that I was dealing with and I told my mother I’m not supposed to be here.
Here is in this present condition.
I’m not supposed to be here, but now that I am here I find myself struggling with the guilt of being here.
GUILT:- is one of the biggest weapons the devil uses against us. It is the door the enemy uses to infiltrate our mind, souls, and body causing one to be tormented by evil spirits.
GUILT:- will destroy you, make you feel useless, unworthy, no good, inapt, ugly, disgraceful. It will strip you of your identity rob you of your confidence in yourself, plunder your- self image, cause you do become bitter and hateful.
GUILT:- can cause a series of emotions and alter the state of the brain.
GUILT:- causes anxiety, it can immobilize you cause to become overwhelmed by fear and shame keeping you from doing, acting, or saying anything. You find yourself building a wall around you that causes you to be trapped in this place called here. You begin to get comfortable in here although there is no activity, no growth, no compassion, no understanding, it’s cold and lonely, but you begin to get comfortable and begin to believe that this is the status quo that this is all that I can ever have.
GUILT:- robs you of faith and confidence in Jesus Christ.
GUILT:- is cultivated when you allow yourself to dwell in this place called here and ponder about how awfully you messed up. You get stuck on how could this happen to me. You said you would never be in a place like this. You did everything in your power to stay away from here, but here is where you are.
GUILT:- is a stronghold. Stronghold:- a mindset that is impregnated with helplessness, hopelessness, insecurity, aniexity, and depression that cause you to accept as unchangeable something in your life eventhough it goes contrary to the Will and Word of God. The stronghold of guilt is often not alone it is usually connected with an incorrect perception of yourself and of God. You think I’m so messed you that God couldn’t forgive or love me. That is an incorrect perception of you and God because there is nothing that you can do to make God not love you and there is nothing that you can do outside of rejecting Him that He will not forgive you and love you in spite of.
HOW DO I GET OUT OF HERE! The Blood of Jesus Christ is your way out.
Matthew 26:28 says “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins”.
WATCH THIS:- Sin in its broadest terms simply means to miss the mark. Adultery, Fornication, Drunkenness, Drug Addiction and etc are all manifestations of sin, but sin is to miss the mark. Therefore if you never planned to be here and you end up here you missed the mark.
Jesus said His blood is shed for the remission of sin (missing the mark) the word remission means to be let go or set free as if nothing ever happened.
WATCH THIS:- A potter in Israel was working on a piece of pottery and after he pulled it out of the even he noticed the potter was cracked and needed to be fixed. So what he did was he walked down to his field and found a baby lamb. He began to search through the wool of the lamb and found a tick on the lamb. He pulled the tick off and carried back to his pottery shop. Once back at his shop he took some powered clay and then squeezed the tick to get the blood out of the tick. He then mixed the blood in the powdered clay and made a paste. He took that paste and put it in the crack of the pottery he made that was cracked and then placed it back in the fire. After a while he pulled the piece of pottery out of the fire and noticed that the crack was now fixed. It was the blood of the lamb that fixed the crack.
When the blood of the lamb is placed to your cracked life Jesus makes you new again.
His blood washes away the stains of past sins.
His blood purges your conscience from dead works.
Takes away the guilt of sin and shame.
His blood blots out all our transgressions.
Acts 2:37 after Peter had preached the Bible says “Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do”?
Peter answered in 2:38 “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”.
David understood the power of repentance and in Psalm 51 we see the sincerity of his heart.
David says in verse 16 & 17 “For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give [it]: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise”.
Broken comes from a Hebrew word called “Shabar”:- it means to crush into pieces, shattered, bruised, violated, not functioning properly, disconnected, overwhelmed with guilt, sorrow, or grief. When we end up in this place called here we have been broken. Something or someone has crushed our emotions, shattered our dreams and desires, violated our hopes and ambitions, now we are not functioning properly anymore. I’m here and I need to get out of here or else I’ll die.
The Bible goes on to say A Contrite Heart!.
The word Contrite come from a Hebrew word called “DAKA” and it means to crumble, bruise, beat to pieces.
CAN I DEAL WITH THIS WORD CONTRITE FOR A MOMENT:-
CONTRITE:- means to be bowed down with the awareness of our spiritual poorness. To be crushed with a guilt. To be sorrowful for our rebellion against God.
A CONTRITE HEART:- Does not seek to rationalize or explain or excuse, justify, defend sin. It doesn’t try to pull the wool over the eyes of God and people or most of all yourself. A contrite heart doesn’t mean I’m sorry because I got caught. A contrite heart realizes rebellion, disobedience, stubbornness, is aware of shortcomings, is not interested in cheap apologies but is sincere and is not ashamed to ask for help.
This is what David had in Psalm 51 and his prayer of repentance.
Let’s look at David’s Prayer of Repentance.
There are 12 things David asked God to do.
12 in the Bible is Divine Government.
David was asking God to Govern his entire life.
1. Have Mercy on me O God – I don’t deserve it
2. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity – like you wash clothes
3. Cleanse me from my sin – make me ceremonially clean so I can worship
4. Purge me with hyssop – strain me like a strainer
5. Make me to hear joy and gladness – I want to hear your voice again
6. Create in me a clean heart – that I may think differently
7. Renew a right spirit – not this crushed by guilt heart
8. Cast me not away – don’t do away with me
9. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation
10. uphold me
11. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness
12. open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise
You may be in that place where you are asking the question How did I get Here and are looking for a way out of here.
All you have to do is be like David and have a broken and contrite hear for the Lord will not despise.
