Summary: what is it to be free?

Freedom

1.We must know how to be free

John 8:31-32

31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

2.We must choose to be free

Joshua 24:14-15

14“Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

3.We must choose to stay free

James 1:22-25

22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

4.We must know there is a price to pay for not being free

Romans 14:11-12

11It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’”

12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Romans 14:11-12

11Read it for yourself in Scripture:

“As I live and breathe,” God says, “every knee will bow before me;

Every tongue will tell the honest truth that I and only I am God.”

12So tend to your knitting. You’ve got your hands full just taking care of your own life before God.
