Fellowship With Our Advocate
September 9, 2007 Morning Service
Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK
Rick Boyne
Message Point: In order to walk like Jesus, we must first KNOW Jesus.
Focus Passage: I John 2:1-6
Supplemental Passage: John 15:4-5 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.
"I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
I. Christ is our advocate
a. Advocate is like a supporter, backer or promoter.
II. Christ is our atonement
a. Propitiation is a fancy word to mean “to wins somebody’s favor”.
b. He is our substitute who soaks up God’s holy anger against sin and receives our punishment. Jesus defends us in the Heavenlies because he is our substitute who is able to turn away God’s wrath against sin and sinners. He is able to do that because he has paid the price on our behalf.
III. Christ is our abode
a. To walk with Christ as He walks
b. We take on the characteristics of those around us.
Invitation: You have to know Jesus before He becomes your advocate. Do you know Jesus today? Have you slipped and sinned and now need your advocate in Heaven? Since He is at the right hand of the Father, He is already there interceding for you.
