November 3, 2008
Muskogee Baptist Association 96th Annual Meeting
Annual Mission Sermon
First Baptist Church, Hulbert, OK
Rick Boyne
Message Point: We are called to tell the Good News; not to keep it to ourselves.
Focus Passage: II Kings 7:3-9
Supplemental Passage: Matthew 28:18-20 NASB And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Introduction:
Text Setup: King Ben-hadad of Aram besieged the walled city of Samaria. This caused a great famine that even resulted in cannibalism. Elisha predicts God’s salvation, but the situation is desperate.
I. The Blessing Discovered (v5)
a. The lepers left the desperate situation to find food.
b. That is like us finding the salvation of the Lord for ourselves.
c. This must happen first before we can truly share the Good News with others.
II. The Blessing Enjoyed (v8)
a. The lepers at their full and began to plunder the camp.
b. That is like us learning and growing in the Knowledge of the Lord; discipleship.
c. It is fine for us to enjoy the blessings of the Lord.
III. The Blessings Shared (v9)
a. The lepers realized that they couldn’t keep the good news to themselves.
b. That is like us reaching out to our family, friends, neighbors, and foreigners with the Good News.
c. There comes a time when we should no longer keep the blessings to ourselves, but share it with others.
Invitation: What judgment will we face because we have kept the Good News to ourselves?
