Oh yeah, we see said the blind men.
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
What did Jesus mean He is the light of the world? Well, before we look at the question, let's look at why He stated it.
Jesus was teaching His disciples and others in the temple on the Sabbath. The service was rudely interrupted by the Scribes and Pharisees the keepers of the Mosaic law, not only up holders of the Old Testament but, they had many laws themselves that they thought people should live by. Same as today in many ways. Some say you do this and you do that to make sure you are saved and stay that way but, Jesus also said He is the only way truth and life and if He is God enough to save you then He is God enough to keep you. Some still think they have to work for their salvation when Jesus said "It is finished".
The Scribes and Pharisees brought an adulterous woman in the middle of service and tried to temp Jesus by asking Him in John 8:4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
If Jesus set the woman free, He violated Moses law, if He had her stoned He couldn't claim to be one who forgives sins.
So, how did He respond? The Bible says in verses 6 through 11 of John chapter 8:
But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. 7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Jesus wrote something in the sand but the Bible does not say what He wrote. Everyone has a theory and of course so do I. I think Jesus wrote the names of the women each of them had affair with sometime over the years.
You will notice that each one left starting with the eldest. I think it is also interesting that in Jeremiah 17:13 “O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.
You will notice that they didn't stick around for any questions to be ask. But, I would say there were many conversations after that event.
Now, why did Jesus say He was the light of the word?
Look at verse 9 of John 8 being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, Jesus shed light on their sin and Jesus sheds light on our sin. I would say that those Scribes and Pharisees thought no one knew of their affair they had with the wife of another maybe over in Rome or maybe the fishing trip they suppose to have made with a friend down along the coast.
God knew because, God sheds light on sin.
That's the reason He is the light of the world because Jesus sheds light on our sin and we see the need of a Saviour. Sad but true some will never see because they are spiritually blind.
