John 19:28-29-After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
The physical aspect:
He was dying not by a lingering sickness, nor with the suddenness of an
accident, but by a violent and painful death!
The spiritual aspect:
John 6:35-Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me
shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
Psalm 42:1-2-As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
Psalm 63:1-O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water.
In the days of Noah, God used water to separate righteousness from
wickedness.
In the days of Moses, God used water to separate freedom from bondage.
The Red sea!
In the days of Naaman, God used water to separate purity from impurity.
7 times in the Jordan!
In the days of Jesus, God has used water to separate SALVATION from SIN.
Baptism is an outer show of what happens on the inside!
It is those times when you feel totally depleted.
You feel that you cannot go on for one more day.
You want to give up, but that is when you call on God and He refreshes you
with His water, His living water.
You may realize one day that the person that you have invested your life in and sacrificed for is not in love with anymore.
You may find your job ending, or your health deteriorating, or your friends moving, or things are not satisfying you like they once did.
We recognize that something must change, and hopefully we come to
understand that our souls are thirsting after the living God!
We want to wake up in the morning and lie down again at night with the
sense that all this running around, all this activity that we are constantly
involved in, all this expending of energy, all this doing, (Matters!)
You see, God is waiting. . . waiting for you and I to call on Him and accept
that water that will satisfy our thirst.
Christ alone can quench our thirst.
He alone can meet the deep need of our hearts.
He alone can give peace, a peace that this world cannot offer!
Isaiah 55:1-“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
Rev 21:6-He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the
Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely
to him who thirsts.
Rev 22: l7-The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say,
"Come!" And let him who thirsts come, Whoever desires, let him take the
water of life freely.
Do not reject what Jesus offers, for those who die in your sins, their eternal cry will be "I thirst".
If Christ cried "I thirst" when he suffered the wrath of God for but three hours, what will it be like for of those who have to endure it for all eternity!
When millions of years have gone, ten millions more lie ahead.
Remember the awful words of the rich man: "And he cried, and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame" (Luke 16:24)
