GOVERNED By DESCENT—Luke 3:23-38

Attention:

A middle school in Oregon faced a unique problem.

A number of girls were beginning to use lipstick & would put it on in the bathroom. After they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to the mirrors leaving dozens of little lip prints.

Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. He called the girls to the bathroom & met them there with the custodian. He explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian, who had to clean the mirrors every day.

To demonstrate how difficult it was, she asked the custodian to clean one of the mirrors.

He took out a long-handled brush, dipped it into the toilet, & scrubbed the mirror. Since then there have been no lip prints on the mirrors.

Because of the descent of the brush into the toilet, the mirror possessed some peculiar attributes that were important to the girls.

Likewise, by descent, Jesus possesses certain peculiarities that are vitally important to us.

MINISTRY(:23)

Explanation: (:23)Destiny

:23—“Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,”

The ministry of the Son of God(:22) permeated/imbued with the Holy Spirit(:22).

Argumentation:

JESUS’ Ministry:

Mat. 10:1-6—“And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, & to heal all kinds of sickness & all kinds of disease. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, & Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, & John his brother; Philip & Bartholomew; Thomas & Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, & Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, & Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. These twelve Jesus sent out & commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, & do not enter a city of the Samaritans. “But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

Mat. 15:21-28—“Then Jesus went out from there & departed to the region of Tyre & Sidon. And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region & cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came & urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” But He answered & said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Then she came & worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” But He answered & said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread & throw it to the little dogs.” And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered & said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.”

Jn. 11:25-26—“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection & the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives & believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?””

Jn. 14:6—“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, & the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Jn. 12:24—““Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground & dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.”

Rom. 5:6, 8-9—“For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.....But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.”

Jn. ministry of the Holy Spirit

Mat. 1:18-21—“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, & not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. “And she will bring forth a Son, & you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.””

Lk. 19:9-10—“And Jesus said to him[Zaccheus], “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek & to save that which was lost.””

Lk. 5:30-32—“And their scribes & the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, “Why do You eat & drink with tax collectors & sinners?” Jesus answered & said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.””

1Jn. 4:8-11—“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us & sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

We know genuine love from God. It is exemplified in Jesus’ salvatory ministry. It is glorified in the outworkings of our lives.

Jn. 14:16-18—““And I will pray the Father, & He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever-- “the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you & will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”

1Jn. 4:13-14—“By this we know that we abide in Him, & He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen & testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.”

Jn. 17:1-5—“Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, & said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, & Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”

YOUR Ministry:

Eph 4:7-16—“But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.” (Now this, “He ascended”--what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, & some pastors & teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith & of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to & fro & carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ-- from whom the whole body, joined & knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”

Heb 13:20-21—“Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever & ever. Amen.”

HERITAGE(:33-34)—(:23-38)

Explanation: (:33-34)—(:23-38) Jewish

:33-34—“the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,”

:34—“the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,”

Jesus was of Jewish descent. The Jews(Hebrews) always look to ‘the fathers’ in regard to their heritage. It is thru them that God raised up their nation from one man(Abram). These are usually considered to be Abraham, Isaac & Jacob.

Ex. 3:1-6; :13-15—“Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.” So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.”.....“Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’”

Argumentation:

Jn. 4:20-22—[To the woman at the well]““Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, & you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.”

*Ps. 147:19-20—“He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes & His judgments to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any nation; And as for His judgments, they have not known them. Praise the LORD!”

Rom. 3:1-2—“What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God.”

Rom. 9:2-8—“that I have great sorrow & continual grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, & the promises; of whom are the fathers & from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen. But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.” That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed.”

2Kgs. 17:24-41—“Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Ava, Hamath, & from Sepharvaim, & placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel; & they took possession of Samaria & dwelt in its cities. And it was so, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they did not fear the LORD; therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which killed some of them. So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The nations whom you have removed & placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the rituals of the God of the land; therefore He has sent lions among them, & indeed, they are killing them because they do not know the rituals of the God of the land.” Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, “Send there one of the priests whom you brought from there; let him go & dwell there, & let him teach them the rituals of the God of the land.” Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came & dwelt in Bethel, & taught them how they should fear the LORD. However every nation continued to make gods of its own, & put them in the shrines on the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities where they dwelt. The men of Babylon made Succoth Benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima, & the Avites made Nibhaz & Tartak; & the Sepharvites burned their children in fire to Adrammelech & Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. So they feared the LORD, & from every class they appointed for themselves priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places. They feared the LORD, yet served their own gods--according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away. To this day they continue practicing the former rituals; they do not fear the LORD, nor do they follow their statutes or their ordinances, or the law & commandment which the LORD had commanded the children of Jacob, whom He named Israel, with whom the LORD had made a covenant & charged them, saying: “You shall not fear other gods, nor bow down to them nor serve them nor sacrifice to them; but the LORD, who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power & an outstretched arm, Him you shall fear, Him you shall worship, & to Him you shall offer sacrifice. And the statutes, the ordinances, the law, & the commandment which He wrote for you, you shall be careful to observe forever; you shall not fear other gods. And the covenant that I have made with you, you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods. But the LORD your God you shall fear; & He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.” However they did not obey, but they followed their former rituals. So these nations feared the LORD, yet served their carved images; also their children & their children’s children have continued doing as their fathers did, even to this day.”

Ezr. 4:1-5—“Now when the adversaries of Judah & Benjamin heard that the descendants of the captivity were building the temple of the LORD God of Israel, they came to Zerubbabel & the heads of the fathers’ houses, & said to them, “Let us build with you, for we seek your God as you do; & we have sacrificed to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here.” But Zerubbabel & Jeshua & the rest of the heads of the fathers’ houses of Israel said to them, “You may do nothing with us to build a house for our God; but we alone will build to the LORD God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.” Then the people of the land tried to discourage the people of Judah. They troubled them in building, & hired counselors against them to frustrate their purpose all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.”

The blood ties of the nation of Israel are so tight & identifying, that even converts are sidelined.

Acts 17:22-31—“Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus & said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; “for as I was passing through & considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: “God, who made the world & everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven & earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, & all things. And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, & has determined their pre-appointed times & the boundaries of their dwellings, “so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him & find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live & move & have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ “Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art & man’s devising. Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.””

Gal. 3:16-26—“Now to Abraham & his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ. And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred & thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise. What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; & it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Gal. 4:1-7—“Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all, but is under guardians & stewards until the time appointed by the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, & if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

POSITION(:31-32)

Explanation: (:31-32)King

:31—“the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of Nathan, the son of David,”

:32—“the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,”

Jesus, by Mary, was of the line of David thru David’s son Nathan. Nathan & Solomon were full brothers thru Bathsheba(Bathshua).

2Sam. 5:13-16—“And David took more concubines & wives from Jerusalem, after he had come from Hebron. Also more sons & daughters were born to David. Now these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, & Eliphelet.”

1Chron. 14:3-7—“Then David took more wives in Jerusalem, & David begot more sons & daughters. And these are the names of his children whom he had in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Beeliada, & Eliphelet.”

1Chron. 3:1-9—“Now these were the sons of David who were born to him in Hebron: The firstborn was Amnon, by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second, Daniel, by Abigail the Carmelitess; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah, by Abital; the sixth, Ithream, by his wife Eglah. These six were born to him in Hebron. There he reigned seven years & six months, & in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years. And these were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, & Solomon--four by Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel. Also there were Ibhar, Elishama, Eliphelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada, & Eliphelet--nine in all. These were all the sons of David, besides the sons of the concubines, & Tamar their sister.”

This contains an alternate spelling of Bathsheba as well as an alternate spelling of her father, Eliam(2Sam. 11:3). Bathsheba = “Daughter of Seven/An oath/Swearing”, whereas “Bathshua” = “Daughter of Wealth/Bounty.” Both Ammiel & Eliam mean “God of the people” or “God is kinsman.”

Jesus, by means of Joseph, was the Son of David thru Solomon by Bathsheba(Mat. 1:6-7).

Jesus was thus king of Israel on both sides—legally(Joseph), thru adoption as it were, & royally(Mary) thru physical kinship.

Mat. 1:5-7—“Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, & Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah. Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, & Abijah begot Asa.”

Argumentation:

Jer 23:5-6—““Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign & prosper, And execute judgment & righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

Jesus is the rightful King of Israel both legally & royally yet there is vastly more to His Kingship & kingdom!

1Tim. 6:13 -16—“I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, & before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed & only Potentate, the King of kings & Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor & everlasting power. Amen.”

Rev. 17:12-14—““The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are of one mind, & they will give their power & authority to the beast. These will make war with the Lamb, & the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords & King of kings; & those who are with Him are called, chosen, & faithful.””

SUBSTANCE(:38)

Explanation: (:38)Essence

:38—“the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.”

Adam was a special creation of God(Gen. 1:26-27 & 2:7, 15-25) so it is only in that limited sense that Adam was God’s “son.”

Anyone can be considered a ‘child of God’ if they become His by faith(Jn. 1:12-13) in His only-begotten Son, Jesus who took on human flesh(Php. 2:6-8) being born of the virgin Mary(Lk. 1:35).

Though Adam was “of God,” the focus for Luke, appears to be that Jesus is the Son of God per His Father’s chosen timeline thru His chosen people Israel. They existed to proclaim the true & living God. They existed to produce His anointed(Messiah), who will be tested & proven to be far more than mere fleshly kinships afford.

Argumentation:

Jn. 1:1-2, 14, 18—“In the beginning was the Word, & the Word was with God, & the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.”.....“And the Word became flesh & dwelt among us, & we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace & truth.”.....“No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.”

Php. 2:5-11—“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, & coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself & became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him & given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, & of those on earth, & of those under the earth, & that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

He is entirely human, but the reason we make much of this fact is because we know that Jesus is also entirely God/Divine.

Heb. 2:5-18—“For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? You have made him[man] a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory & honor, And set him over the works of Your hands. You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory & honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things & by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both He who sanctifies & those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.” And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And again: “Here am I & the children whom God has given Me.” Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh & blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, & release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham. Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful & faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.”

Micah 5:2—““But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.””

Isa. 9:6-7—“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government & peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David & over His kingdom, To order it & establish it with judgment & justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”

Mat. 1:22-23—“So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, & bear a Son, & they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.””

Jn. 17:1-5—“Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, & said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, “as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, & Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”
