Some More Implications of Grace

Message Point: When we have accepted grace, we are able to extend grace to others.
Focus Passage: Colossians 3:12-17
Supplemental Passage: “make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:2-4 NASB)
Introduction: Grace is for more than salvation. We say we understand that we do not try to earn our salvation, but in practice, many live like they are trying to earn God’s favor. God’s inexhaustible favor came when the blood of Jesus was applied to your heart. Yet, because we haven’t actually learned that yet, we let that heresy carry over into our relationships with others. We try to out-perform each other. If we aren’t able to out-perform, then, like little children on a schoolyard, we belittle each other. However, the implication of grace is that we treat each other with respect. If the other person is having problems, we do our best to restore them to a right relationship, realizing it could be us having the same problem.
I. Put on Compassion
a. Treat one another with kindness
b. No matter what else, exercise love toward one another
II. Let the Peace of Christ Rule your Hearts
a. "In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12 NASB)
b. Do not cause problems
c. Be of one heart and mind
III. Let the Word of Christ Dwell within You
a. Teach and instruct one another
i. with wisdom
ii. psalms & hymns
iii. thankfulness
b. "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (John 15:7 NASB)
