INTRO: Despite their stubbornness, God dealt with Israel with much grace and mercy in their rebellions against Him. Moses the man of God was special before the Lord because he was: (1) The meekest man on earth (Num. 12:3); (2) Faithful in all God’s house (Num. 12:7); (3) Spoke to God mouth to mouth (Num. 12:8); (4) Pattern for the Prophet to come (Deut. 18:18); (5) Found grace in the sight of the Lord (Exo. 33:17).
Yet Moses and Aaron crossed the line with God and were not allowed to enter the Promised Land. The Bible teaches us that we can still cross lines with God (I John 5:16; I Cor. 11:29-30).
We must guard our lives so that we do not cross that line. Moses is a warning to all of us – that God is no respecter of persons. There are several things that Moses did that made God so angry with him, he was denied entrance into the Promised Land.
I. HE BELIEVED NOT IN GOD
A. The Privilege of Moses (see Intro notes).
B. Consider the admonistion in Luke 12:48 – “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required:â€
C. The Sin of Moses (Num. 20:12-13)
D. The Sin of Unbelief
1. Blocked entry into the Promised Land (Heb. 3:17-19)
2. Block entry into heaven (Rev. 21:8)
3. Block God’s work in your life (Matt 13:58)
II. HE REBELLED AGAINST GOD’S WORD
A. The Privilege of Moses (Num. 12:8)
B. The Rebellion of Moses (Num. 27:12-14)
C. The Sin of Rebellion
1. A sin worthy of death (Josh. 1:18)
2. The rebellion of Saul (I Sam. 15:23)
3. Causing the wrath of God (Psalm 78:31)
III. HE SPOKE ARROGANTLY
A. The Arrogance of Moses (Psa. 106:32-33; cf. Num. 20:10)
B. The Importance of our Words (Matt. 12:36)
C. Words spoken in anger (Eph. 4:26)
IV. HE SANCTIFIED NOT GOD
A. The Example of Moses (Deut. 32:48-51)
B. The Example of Nadab & Abihu (Lev. 10:1-3)
C. The Example of Hophni and Phinehas (I Sam. 2:12-17)
D. The Example of Corinthan believers (I Cor. 11:29-30)
CONCLUSION: Though we now live in the New Testament under a period of grace; and though anyone truly saved will never lose their salvation; we are still capable of crossing the line with God that brings sure judgment on our lives. Brethren, if you are in danger of crossing the line, seek Him today. Come to the Lord today and turn your heart and life to Him with all haste before it is too late!
