Trans: Gen. 10-11
"All the people of the world have descended from Noah's 3 sons - Shem, his descendants became the Hebrews and Syrians. It is through Shem that the seed-line continues.
Ham's descendants are that of North Africa and the Far East.
Japheth's descendants the Indo-European people."
The Bible does not always present itself in chronological order. If often gives the broad picture and then goes back and fills in the details.
Chapter 10 gives the broad picture of Shem, Ham, and Japheth's descendants being scattered; Chapter 11 gives the details of why they were scattered.
I. FIRST, TO BE A NIMROD IS TO LIVE IN REBELLION AGAINST GOD.
8 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD."
Nimrod comes from the verb marad meaning "to rebel". His name means "let us rebel". Nimrod was mentioned as a mighty hunter. History shows that he gained fame by subduing the horse and using the leopard to hunt wild beast.
Tame leopards are used even today in India for hunting wild game. The word Nimrod is formed by two words: Nimr which means a leopard and rada or rad which means to subdue.
before the LORD - Delitzch, "Nimrod was mighty in hunting, and that in opposition to Jehovah (ἐναντίον κυρίον, lxx); not before Jehovah in the sense of, according to the purpose and will of Jehovah, still less, like לֵאלֹהִים in Jonah 3:3, or τῷ Θεῷ in Acts 7:20, in a simply superlative sense. The last explanation is not allowed by the usage of the language, the second is irreconcilable with the context. The name itself, Nimrod from מָרַד, "we will revolt," points to some violent resistance to God."
Trans:A Nimrod lives in rebellion against God.
Joshua warned Israel:
"8 If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, 'a land which flows with milk and honey.' 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them." Numbers 14:8-9
Rebellion is always Satanic:
"22 So Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king." 1 Samuel 15:22-23 (NKJV)
Rebellion is putting in anything or anybody in the place of God:
"7 Then I said to them, 'Each of you, throw away the abominations which are before his eyes, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.' 8 But they rebelled against Me and would not obey Me. They did not all cast away the abominations which were before their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said, 'I will pour out My fury on them and fulfill My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.' Ezekiel 20:7-8 (NKJV)
Rebellion is refusing to follow God's Spirit.
"But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them." Isaiah 63:10 (NKJV)
Rebellion is from the sin nature.
"Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be." Romans 8:7 (NKJV)
Trans:Truth is rebellion only hurts the rebel!
On the Fox River and Chain o' Lakes waterways of northern Illinois, officials annually face an expensive problem. Of the roughly 600 hundred buoys [boo-e's] on these waterways, not one is expected to last the entire season. Each year the attrition rate for the lighted plastic buoys [boo-e's] has been 125%.
What happens to them? Officials say they are willfully smashed to pieces by vandals.
But in so doing, boaters are only hurting themselves and others. Stephen Lee, "The buoys [boo-e's] are there to provide safety and direction for boaters, Some mark no-wake zones where power-boaters must go at slower speeds. They delineate shallow areas where boating could be dangerous, and show the way to mouths of channels."
Rebellion against the Lord is like that - it always brings pain to the rebel.
II. FURTHERMORE, TO BE A NIMROD, IS TO RELY UPON YOUR OWN MIGHT.
a mighty one...mighty hunter...mighty hunter - The Hebrew word for "hunt" is (tsayid), which is used on occasion for hunting men (1 Sam 24:12; Jer 16:16; Lam 3:15).
We have seen mighty men before and where that power lead them!
"There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown." Genesis 6:4 (NKJV)
"He will guard the feet of His saints, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. "For by strength no man shall prevail." 1 Samuel 2:9 (NKJV)
"16 No king is saved by the multitude of an army; A mighty man is not delivered by great strength. 17 A horse is a vain hope for safety; Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength." Psalm 33:16-17
"10 He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. 11 The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy." Psalm 147:10-11
"10 They make fun of rulers and laugh at fortresses, while building dirt mounds so they can capture cities. 11 Then suddenly they disappear like a gust of wind— those sinful people who worship their own strength." Habakkuk 1:10-11 (CEV)
It is said of Uzziah, "15 And he made devices in Jerusalem, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and the corners, to shoot arrows and large stones. So his fame spread far and wide, for he was marvelously helped till he became strong. 16 But when he was strong his heart was lifted up, to his destruction, for he transgressed against the LORD his God by entering the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense." 2 Chronicles 26:15-16 (NKJV)
Only a Nimrod depends upon his own strength!
"23 Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; 24 But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight," says the LORD." Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NKJV)
Strong people trust in themselves, weak people draw upon God's strength in prayer.
In Leadership, Ben Patterson, dean of the chapel at Hope College and a former pastor, writes:
"In the spring of 1980 I was suffering great pain from what was diagnosed as two herniated discs in my lower back. The prescription was total bed rest. But since my bed was too soft, the treatment ended up being total floor rest. I was frustrated and humiliated. I couldn't preach, I couldn't lead meetings, I couldn't call on new prospects for the church. I couldn't do anything but pray.
Not that I immediately grasped that last fact. It took two weeks for me to get so bored that I finally asked my wife for the church directory so I could at least do something, even if it was only pray for the people of my congregation. Note: it wasn't piety but boredom and frustration that drove me to pray. But pray I did, every day for every person in my church, two or three hours a day. After a while, the time became sweet.
Toward the end of my convalescence, anticipating my return to work, I prayed, "Lord, this has been good, this praying. It's too bad I don't have time to do this when I'm working."
And God spoke to [my heart] and "You have the same twenty-four hours each day when you're weak as when you're strong. The only difference is that when you're strong you think you're in charge. When you're weak you know you aren't."
A Nimrod thinks things are getting down by his own power.
III. THIRDLY, A NIMROD, REIGNS OVER HIS OWN LITTLE KINGDOM. 10:10-12
10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city).
Babel—Babel was the beginning of Nimrod's kingdom. The named was derived from the Assyrian word babilu meaning gate of god. After the tower of Babel incident, the Hebrews called it balal meaning "to confound". Babel was called Babylon by the Greeks and Romans.
This city reached its height of glory during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II (605-562 B.C.) He built the Hanging Gardens for the queen who was homesick for her homeland. Fifty miles of double walls were built around the city with the inner walls a width of twenty-one feet and the outer walls eleven feet wide. They were built this wide so that chariots could transport soldiers quickly to weak points of defense while under attack. The walls reached a height of three hundred feet and were re-enforced by four hundred and twenty foot towers every sixty feet along the wall. The waters of the Euphrates were diverted to form a moat around the walls of the city.
The city was divided into rectangles with roads and gates named after Babylonian gods. The homes were whitewashed to cover the gray clay look of the homes. Babylonians painted their door frames red because red was regarded as a color which frightened and kept away the devils and barred the doorway of all evil influences. Red was formed from iron sequi-oxide.
Babel was once the capital of Assyria (2 Chronicles 33:11). The Jews were carried captive to Babylon. They were sent to the home of idolatry to cure them of idolatry (2 Kings 25; Jeremiah 25). The Jews were reminded that confusion is the spiritual result of idolatry.
Nabonidus along with his son Belshazzar were the last kings to rule Babylon. The city fell on October 13, 539 B.C., to Cyrus, king of Persia. Babylon had become weakened by heavy taxes which caused the people to rebel. The Babylonian empire was represented by the head of gold in Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Daniel 2 and 7).
Erech—Erech was located about 50 miles from the traditional site of the garden of Eden. It was the chief city of Ishtar worship where prostitution was mandatory. One of the first ziggurats was discovered here at the mounds of Warka. Erech means "length".
Accad—Accad was located about 100 miles northwest of Noah's traditional home in Fara. It was the capital of Sargon's empire. Sargon was a famous warrior contemporary with Cheops, the builder of the Great Pyramid.
Asshur—Asshur conquered Babylonia in 1300 B.C. It was the leading power in the East for about 700 years. The chief deity of the Assyrian religion was Ashur, the god of the city Asshur. Assyrians worshiped gods of nature. Anu was their chief god of heaven. Bel was the god of the region inhabited by man, beast, and birds. The word Asshur means "step".
Ninevah—Ninevah was at one time the capital of the Assyrian empire (2 Kings 19:36). It is east of the Tigris River in Iraq. The city at one time was surrounded by zoos and exotic gardens.
Jonah preached to this city and warned of its destruction (Jonah 1-4). Nahum prophesied the fall of the city of Ninevah (Nahum 2:1-4).
The characteristic of Nimrods kingdom is found in Gen.11:1-9
A. First, it focused on human Unity. 11:1-2
1 Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. - the world was united - one language, one location.
In fact the world will be united under the Antichrist and this planet with united together against the Lord.
"1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, 3 "Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us." 4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision. 5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:" Psalm 2:1-5 (NKJV)
"12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful." Revelation 17:12-14 (NKJV)
The Fifth Dimension, "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In"
"This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius,
Harmony and understanding, sympathy and trust abounding...
Mystic crystal revelations and the mind's true liberations"
The Fifth Dimension's initial 1967 releases, "Go Where You Wanna Go" and "Another Day Another Heartache," were styled after the Mamas and the Papas. These paved the way for "Up Up and Away," their first Top 10 success, later that year.
After losing his wallet during a 1968 New York concert tour, Billy Davis received a call from a man who said he had found it in a taxi and wanted to return it. Considering this unusual in a huge city like New York, Davis was grateful and offered the man a reward.
Instead, the man invited the group to a play he was co-producing, the musical Hair. They were impressed with the opening number, "Aquarius," and took it to their producer, who combined it with the play's closing song, "Let the Sunshine In."
The result was their biggest hit, reaching number 1 in 1969. The tune put the Fifth Dimension on the musical map.
The sixties saw the dawning of an age of astrology. What's your sign? became a common greeting. Using astrological "Evidence," it offers a Utopian vision of a new world order marked by peace, freedom, and mind-blowing understanding. The planets were lining up to create this cosmic effect.
This approach is nothing new. Astrology goes back to biblical times. The tower of Babel in Genesis 11 was probably an observatory being built for astrological calculations.
God repeatedly warned his people against running their lives according to the placement of heavenly bodies. "Do not act like the other nations, who try to read their future in the stars" (Jeremiah 10:2).
Why? Because it's idolatry. People were looking to the stars for guidance rather than to the Creator of the stars. Why try to determine the effect of cosmic forces when you can have a vital relationship with an all-powerful God?
The Nimrods always try to unify everything about humanity and God is left out of the picture. We are seeing the same emphasis today.
Spurgeon, ""To remain divided is sinful! Did not our Lord pray, that they may be one, even as we are one"? (John 17:22). A chorus of ecumenical voices keep harping the unity tune. What they are saying is, "Christians of all doctrinal shades and beliefs must come together in one visible organization, regardless... Unite, unite!"
Such teaching is false, reckless and dangerous. Truth alone must determine our alignments. Truth comes before unity. Unity without truth is hazardous. Our Lord’s prayer in John 17 must be read in its full context. Look at verse 17: "Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth." Only those sanctified through the Word can be one in Christ. To teach otherwise is to betray the Gospel."
B. Furthermore, it focused on human Ingenuity. 3-4
3 Then they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. 4 And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens - this was a project requiring human genius!
The tower of Babel ziggurat may have been built for several reasons:
1. They may have wanted to protect themselves from another flood.
2. Mountains were considered to be the dwelling places of the gods for they were high in the sky. Babylonians believed there was a mountain in the East where the sun arose and where gods assembled on New Year's Day to fix the destiny of the universe.
Men would build these high towers to meet the god half way while he came down to his temple. The stairway was for the god to go up and down, the ascending side being on the east side (side of the sunrise) and the descending side on the western side. The Babylonians believed these stairs represented the ladder of Mithras which was a ladder that led to heaven and passed through seven gates of different metals. The soul went to heaven this way.
3. The temple at the top of the ziggurat also served as a platform in the study and observation of the movement of the stars and planets. The Babylonians are credited for the creation of the zodiac.
4. The tower may have been used for military purposes as a lookout position and a point of defense.
5. The high tower would also serve as a landmark or beacon to those traveling to or from the city of Babel.
Human wisdom can build great things but falls short of meeting man's real needs.
"Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain." Psalm 127:1
"13 "Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness And his chambers by injustice, Who uses his neighbor's service without wages And gives him nothing for his work, 14 Who says, 'I will build myself a wide house with spacious chambers, And cut out windows for it, Paneling it with cedar And painting it with vermilion.' 15 "Shall you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar?..." How much building today leaves God out of the picture and is merely human.

Harold Ray Ragsdale was born in 1939 in Clarkdale, Georgia. He began piano at age 6 and played locally with the Barons, a band he formed at age fifteen.
Using the name Ray Stevens, he had hits like "Ahab the Arab" which peaked at number 5, and "Everything is Beautiful."
His song Mr. Businessman is about many people who are concentrating on busyness and ignoring the business that's most important. They focus on building their fortunes, but not building their lives. They neglect their closest relationships in their pursuits of success and power.
The Bible warns, we might "gain the whole world, but lose our own soul" (Mark 8:36).
A Nimrod builds everything but a relationship with God.
C. Thirdly, his focus was on human Glory.
...let us make a name for ourselves - they had no regard for God's glory.
The Devil is still offering people glory if they will worship and serve him.
"8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me." Matthew 4:8-9 (NKJV)
"It is not good to eat much honey; So to seek one's own glory is not glory." Proverbs 25:27 (NKJV)
A Babylonian king would learn the danger of human glorification.
"28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of the twelve months he was walking about the royal palace of Babylon. 30 The king spoke, saying, "Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?" 31 While the word was still in the king's mouth, a voice fell from heaven: "King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you! 32 And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses." Daniel 4:28-32 (NKJV)
Herod learned the same lesson.
"20 Now Herod had been very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; but they came to him with one accord, and having made Blastus the king's personal aide their friend, they asked for peace, because their country was supplied with food by the king's country. 21 So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. 22 And the people kept shouting, "The voice of a god and not of a man!" 23 Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died." Acts 12:20-23 (NKJV)
Only a Nimrod glorifies himself.
"because "All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away," 1 Peter 1:24 (NKJV)
Douglas Wilson, "The church has left its biblical standard of worship, which is to glorify God, and has embraced a man-centered goal, the enjoyment and pleasure of the viewer.
A successful service, is now, thought to be one in which the participants are pleased. In a biblical service, the desire of the worshipers' hearts is fulfilled when God is pleased."
D. Fourthly, a Nimrod focuses on human Autonomy. 4b
lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth - this is man chooses his way over God's Word. Gen.8:17; 9:1,7
Nimrod ignores God's Word and lives by his own stubborn will.
Jesus said to Israel, "37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 See! Your house is left to you desolate; 39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' " Matthew 23:37-39 (NKJV)
God has reached out to all with the gospel but man is not willing to come.
"2 "The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, 3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. 4 Again, he sent out other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, "See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding." ' 5 But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business." Matthew 22:2-5 (NKJV)
Man's heart is hard and stiff-necked.
"51 "You stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, 53 who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it." Acts 7:51-53
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you will hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, 9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. 10 Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, 'They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.' The Bible warns, "He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy." Proverbs 29:1 (NKJV)
"But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God," Romans 2:5 (NASB)
A Nimrod does as he pleases with no regard for God's way, will, or word.
Some people are just plain stubborn!
Theatre Arts magazine: A subscriber to the Theatre Arts magazine called "Information" for the magazine's number.
"Sorry," said the operator, "but there is nobody listed by the name of Theodore Arts."
The subscriber insisted: "It's not a person; it's a publication. I want Theatre Arts."
The operator repeated, "I told you, we have no listing for Theodore Arts."
By now the subscriber was hollering, "The word is Theatre: T-H-E-A-T-R-E."
The operator responded: "That—is not the way to spell Theodore."
E. Fifthly, a Nimrod focuses on human Possibility. 5-6
5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the LORD said, "Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. - Because man is created in the image of God he can do some amazing things.
We have put a man on the moon; we have technology that boggles the mind; In the 1870's, we had the first house that was lighted with electricity. Cars just started to become available 100 years ago. Charles Lindbergh made the first transatlantic flight in 1927. Televisions didn't become widely available until after WWII. In other words, the advances humankind has made in a relatively short period of time -
Cell phones; Artificial hearts; Personal computers; Communication Satellites; world-wide internet; and the list goes on and on....
But only a Nimrod focuses on human Possibility instead of God - what has man made that ultimately satisfies? What has he made that is Lasting? That can give inner peace? That can stop wars and cause people to love one another? Save a Soul? Keep one from dying? Can scientist give you a glorified body? Eternal life? Cause everything in life to work out for your good?
F. Finally the destiny of this human City. 7-9
7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
"9 "The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her, when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.'" Revelation 18:9-10
In Nimrods day the Lord came down and the city came to an abrupt end; In the days of the Antichrist, the city will be over in just one hour...and then the Lord will come back and set up His eternal Kingdom.
Con:
1. Are you a Nimrod? Living in Rebellion against God; Relying upon you own might; Reigning over your own paper kingdom - focused on humanity, it's unity, Ingenuity, glory, Autonomy; possibility and city.
2. It may seem like everything is going smoothly but the wheel are about to come off.
3. Have you ever seen Greyhounds race? They are sleek, beautiful, fast moving dogs. It is amazing to watch them all take off, running in harmony in the same direction.
To keep everything going there is a mechanical fur rabbit that takes off in front of them - it is not a real rabbit and it is not possible for them to caught it.
That is Nimrods world - what he is chasing isnt even real and his dreams cannot be caught.
At a Florida track, the gun went off and the little mechanical fur rabbit was off, dogs beautifully in pursuit.
Then there was an electrical short in the system and the rabbit came to a complete stop - it exploded and when up in flames! The dogs were bewildered.
One news report said, "Several dogs simply stopped running and laid down on the track, their tongues hanging out. Two dogs, still frenzied with the case, ran into a wall, breaking several ribs. Another dog began chasing his tail, while the rest howled at the people in the stands. Not one dog finished the race."
When Christ Returns, Nimrods world is going to short circuit, he is going to wake up from his fantasy world and face the reality of the fiery judgment of God.
