Message Point: When we don’t trust God, we can fall into a great depression and do things we wouldn’t ordinarily do.

Focus Passage: I Samuel 27:1-12

Supplemental Passage: Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

Introduction:

I. Stinkin Thinkin (stinking thinking)

a. David had just had a victory with Saul. Chapter 26 ended on an upbeat

b. But Ch 27 starts with David saying to himself (in his heart KJV) “Saul’s gonna get me yet”

c. It is interesting to note that God is not mentioned in this chapter. It is “all about David”

d. David exchanged spiritual reliance on God for self-sufficiency.

II. Runnin Skeart (running scared)

a. David was filled with pessimistic doubt: nothing better for me than to run away

b. He decided that God couldn’t take care of him anymore

c. He found refuge in the land of his enemies

III. Lyin Killer (lying killer)

a. David lied to the king about who he attacked in order to keep living in the country in peace

b. David went from feeling bad about cutting a corner of Saul’s robe off to innocent men, women and children just to cover up his actions

c. When we are away from God, we too, start to cover up what we’ve done and where we’ve been
