TIMEFRAME Awareness(5:1-32)
Explanation: (5:1-32)
:3—“And Adam lived one hundred & thirty years, & begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, & named him Seth.”
Adam had already lived 130 yrs. until Seth was born. There is no mention of Abel or Cain here. There is no question as to the meaning of “130 years.”
Thereby we can conclude that Abel’s murder occurred sometime within 130 yrs. of Adam’s creation.
Something to consider...?Can it be assumed that since Cain & Abel are not mentioned here, that Adam, & therefore all of the following fathers(:4-32), could have been fathers prior to the mention of the specific names listed here?
Seth was made in the “likeness” of Adam. Seth was made according to Adam’s “image.” This speaks to our understanding of the use of these same terms regarding Mankind’s being created in the “image” & “likeness” of God(1:26-27). As our sons are a product of ourselves, they are very real “images” of their father(& mother) & also bear their “likeness.”
Both Adam & Eve named Seth(4:25—where Eve names). Adam is the head of this family & Eve is his willing partner.
As God named His creation, so do people “name” theirs. It seems everything mankind does is associated with a picture or an image of God. No wonder some who reject God come to the aberrant conclusion that they themselves are gods.
“Lived”—hyx khaw-yaw'—1) To live, have life, remain alive, sustain life, live prosperously, live for ever, be quickened, be alive, be restored to life or health. Strong— a primitive root [compare hwx khaw-vah']; To live, whether literally or figuratively; causatively, to revive.
“Years”—hnv shaw-neh' (in pl. only) —1) Year—1a) As division of time, 1b) As measure of time, 1c) As indication of age, 1d) A lifetime (of years of life). Strong—A year (as a revolution of time).
“Begot”(See :4)—dly yaw-lad'—1) To bear, bring forth, beget, gender, travail. Strong—a primitive root; To bear young; causatively, To beget; medically, To act as midwife; specifically, To show lineage.
“Likeness”(See :1)—twmd dem-ooth'—N. f.—1) Likeness, similitude—Adv.—2) In the likeness of, like as. Strong—Resemblance; concretely, Model, shape; adverbially, Like. Used 25X.
“Image”—Mlu tseh'-lem—1) Image—1a) Images (of tumours, mice, heathen gods), 1b) Image, likeness (of resemblance), 1c) Mere, empty, image, semblance (fig.). Strong—from an unused root meaning to shade; A phantom, i.e. (figuratively) Illusion, resemblance; hence, A representative figure, especially an idol. Used 17X.
This is the same word used in Gen. 1:26-27.
“Named”(See :2—“Called”)—arq kaw-raw'—1) to call, call out, recite, read, cry out, proclaim. Strong—a primitive root [rather identical with arq kaw-raw' through the idea of accosting a person met]; To call out to (i.e. properly, Address by name, but used in a wide variety of applications).
“Seth”—tv shayth—Seth = "compensation"(See 4:25).
:4—“After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; & he had sons & daughters.”
Adam had many children that are not mentioned in this genealogy.
*The point of this genealogy is to show how a particular/specific generational line played out providentially into God’s plan for the world. This manifests itself in :28-32ff. Noah is the endpoint or focus of this genealogy. Adam’s line thru Seth is its beginning. Thus Cain’s generations leads to an unrepentant & variant endpoint with Lamech(4:16-24).
Adam(& Eve) bore other children—both “sons & daughters”— during the 800 yr. period following Seth’s birth.
“It was the chief means of reserving a knowledge of God, of the great truths of religion, as well as the influence of genuine piety. So that, as their knowledge was obtained by tradition, they would be in a condition to preserve it in the greatest purity.”—JFB
So begins a word order which is repeated for each generation thruout this chapter.

:5—“So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred & thirty years; & he died.”
Adam lived a total of 930 years till the day of his death. Adam had not partaken of the Tree of Life(3:22-24), so he died physically.
*To get a perspective this length of time:
—The U.S. has not even been in existence for 300 yrs.!
—If we could trace our genealogy back 930 yrs. we would be looking at 1081 AD. None of us can do that.
*Adam lived beyond Lamech’s birth! Technically Adam’s great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson!
Speculation only—It is highly doubtful that Adam knew his grandson Lamech, given the tremendous population of the earth at the time.
There is no biblical record of the death of Eve.
Argumentation:
*Mt 10:28-31—““And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul & body in hell. “Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
God knows them, I don’t, thus my time is captured between the tensions of full knowledge(God’s) & limited knowledge(mine).
Js. 4:13-15—“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such & such a city, spend a year there, buy & sell, & make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time & then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live & do this or that.””
1Jn. 2:15-18—“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, & the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, & the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. Little children, it is the last hour; & as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.”

1Pet. 1:22-25—“Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives & abides forever, because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.”

Mk. 13:28 -37—““Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near--at the doors! Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. WALK(5:21-24)
Explanation: (5:21-24)
Genesis 5:21-24
:21—“Enoch lived sixty-five years, & begot Methuselah.”
Enoch fathered a son “Methuselah” at 65ΒΈ yrs. of age. Enoch fathered sons & daughters for an additional 300 yrs. after the birth of his son Methuselah.
“Enoch”—Kwnx khan-owk'—Enoch = “dedicated.”
:22—“After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, & had sons & daughters.”
:23—“So all the days of Enoch were three hundred & sixty-five years.”
:24—“And Enoch walked with God; & he was not, for God took him.”
It is mentioned that Enoch “walked with God.” God thereby “took” Enoch. So Enoch did not die a natural death as other men, but was probably translated directly to heaven at God’s bidding. Thus he seemingly disappeared from the presence men on earth.
Ps. 116:15—“Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints.”
Heb. 11:5—“By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “& was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”
“What does it mean to walk with God? It means to be reconciled to God through faith. It means to have come to God & asked forgiveness for your sin so that a relationship between you & God can be established. It means to be agreed with God, it means to be in fellowship with God, to love God. This describes a relationship.....You know what happened? He took a walk with God one day & never came back. He just walked right into heaven.....the Lord is showing us that there is victory over death.”..... Why? "He obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God."..... The Hebrew here is used of a sudden, inexplicable disappearance. "He was not." That's a sudden, inexplicable disappearance. You find it used that way in Isa. 17:4, Prov. 3:16, 1Kgs. 20:30 & 43:13, 36...... “It doesn't say that he had thoughts about God; it doesn't say he philosophized about God; it doesn't say he believed in God; it doesn't say he talked about God; it doesn't say he read about God. It says he walked with God. And he walked with God right into heaven.—John MacArthur
Enoch lived to the age of 365 years.
The only other biblical instance of someone going directly to heaven without experiencing death is the prophet Elijah(2Kgs. 2:9-12).
2Kgs. 2:9-14—“And so it was, when they had crossed over[the Jordan River], that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” Then it happened, as they continued on & talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, & separated the two of them; & Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, & he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel & its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes & tore them into two pieces. He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, & went back & stood by the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, & struck the water, & said, “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way & that; & Elisha crossed over.”

Argumentation:
Gen. 3:8—“And they[Adam & Eve] heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, & Adam & his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.”
Gen. 17:1—“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram & said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me & be blameless.”
Deut. 5:33—““You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live & that it may be well with you, & that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.”
Deut. 13:4—““You shall walk after the LORD your God & fear Him, & keep His commandments & obey His voice, & you shall serve Him & hold fast to Him.”
Rom. 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”

Rev. 19:5-8—“Then a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all you His servants & those who fear Him, both small & great!” And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters & as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad & rejoice & give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, & His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean & bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.”

WORK(5:28-32; 6:9)
Explanation: (5:28-32; 6:9)
:28—“Lamech lived one hundred & eighty-two years, & had a son.”
The language shifts slightly here in comparison to the other entries. We are at the author’s(Moses’)intended destination. Chapter 6 will give us details of Noah’s life which are vital for a proper understanding of man’s station in life.
Thru Adam by Seth by Enosh by Cainan by Mahalalel by Jared by Enoch by Methuselah, Noah would come on the scene.
:29—“And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our work & the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD has cursed.””
Lamech fathered a son at 182 yrs. of age. Lamech called his son “Noah.” Noah’s name means “rest.” Noah was recognized as the one who would give mankind rest from the “work” & “toil” associated with the curse upon the ground. Such insight had to have come thru prophetic revelation from God.
YaHWeH is the one who cursed the ground(3:17-19) as the penalty for Adam’s sin of eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil(3:6, 11-12). Thus we cannot say that the curse was experienced solely by the man Adam, but was experienced by his progeny as well.
Gen. 3:17-19—“Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, & have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. Both thorns & thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.””
2Pet. 2:4-5—“For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell & delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; & did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;”
Ezek. 14:13-14—““Son of man, when a land sins against Me by persistent unfaithfulness, I will stretch out My hand against it; I will cut off its supply of bread, send famine on it, & cut off man & beast from it. Even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, & Job, were in it, they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness,” says the Lord GOD.”
Heb. 11:7—“By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world & became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”
Gen. 6:8-9—“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.”

You know how you're working & you're going & you're doing whatever you're doing, & you rest in order to catch your breath. Enoch lived to the age of 777 years.
Noah arrived thru Adam by Seth by Enosh by Cainan by Mahalalel by Jared by Enoch by Methuselah by Lamech...10 generations.
:32—“And Noah was five hundred years old, & Noah begot Shem, Ham, & Japheth.”
Argumentation:
*Hosea 2:13-20—“I will punish her[Israel] For the days of the Baals to which she burned incense. She decked herself with her earrings and jewelry, And went after her lovers; But Me she forgot,” says the LORD. “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, Will bring her into the wilderness, And speak comfort to her. I will give her her vineyards from there, And the Valley of Achor as a door of hope; She shall sing there, As in the days of her youth, As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt. Php. 2:1-2—“Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”

We recently had a pair of FISKARS 28” bypass loppers break/They were around 2 yrs old but had a Lifetime Warranty/I took a picture of the loppers & emailed the picture with a description of how they broke/I got a return message that we would receive a new warranted pair in the mail/Sure enough, We got the new loppers!/I was thrilled to receive the answer to our dilemma with no hassle!/The FISKARS work supplied rest to us/An example for other companies to follow/Transmitted WORK
