Daniel 4: 1 – 37
I Dreamed A Dream
1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. 2 I thought it good to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me. 3 How great are His signs, and how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation. 4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. 6 Therefore I issued a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. 7 Then the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in, and I told them the dream; but they did not make known to me its interpretation. 8 But at last Daniel came before me (his name is Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god; in him is the Spirit of the Holy God), and I told the dream before him, saying: 9 “Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the Spirit of the Holy God is in you, and no secret troubles you, explain to me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation. 10 “These were the visions of my head while on my bed: I was looking, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. 11 The tree grew and became strong; Its height reached to the heavens, and it could be seen to the ends of all the earth. 12 Its leaves were lovely, its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. The beasts of the field found shade under it, the birds of the heavens dwelt in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it. 13 “I saw in the visions of my head while on my bed, and there was a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven. 14 He cried aloud and said thus: ‘ Chop down the tree and cut off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts get out from under it, and the birds from its branches. 15 Nevertheless leave the stump and roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field. Let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let him graze with the beasts on the grass of the earth. 16 Let his heart be changed from that of a man, let him be given the heart of a beast, and let seven times pass over him. 17 ‘ This decision is by the decree of the watchers, and the sentence by the word of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will, and sets over it the lowest of men.’ 18 “This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Now you, Belteshazzar, declare its interpretation, since all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able, for the Spirit of the Holy God is in you.” 19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for a time, and his thoughts troubled him. So the king spoke, and said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation trouble you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, may the dream concern those who hate you, and its interpretation concern your enemies! 20 “The tree that you saw, which grew and became strong, whose height reached to the heavens and which could be seen by all the earth, 21 whose leaves were lovely and its fruit abundant, in which was food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and in whose branches the birds of the heaven had their home— 22 it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown and reaches to the heavens, and your dominion to the end of the earth. 23 “And inasmuch as the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave its stump and roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field; let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let him graze with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him’; 24 this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king: 25 They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses. 26 “And inasmuch as they gave the command to leave the stump and roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be assured to you, after you come to know that Heaven rules. 27 Therefore, O king, let my advice be acceptable to you; break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.” 28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of the twelve months he was walking about the royal palace of Babylon. 30 The king spoke, saying, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?” 31 While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven: “King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you! 32 And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.” 33 That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws. 34 And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation. 35 All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, “What have You done?” 36 At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and splendor returned to me. My counselors and nobles resorted to me, I was restored to my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down.
Here are a couple of light hearted humor to lighted up a sad, highly stressful story which we will be going over today;
Why did the composer write music in bed?
He wrote sheet music
Why did the gangster cut the legs off his bed?
He wanted to lie low for a while.
Why did the man take a tape measure to bed with him?
To see how long he slept.
Why did the jockey take hay to bed?
To feed his nightmares.
Why did the man climb on to the chandelier?
Because he was a light sleeper.
Why didn't the banana snore?
It was afraid it would wake up the rest of the bunch.
Why do people go to bed?
Because the bed won't go to them.
'Why do you comb your hair before going to bed?'
'To make a good impression on the pillow.'
Why is a river lazy?
It never leaves its bed.
Did you enjoy any of these little statements? I do not know about you but as for me, I do not get to many funny dreams. Usually, they are scary or totally bizarre. In many cases I would prefer just to get a deep night’s rest without any dreams and just wake up ready to go.
Today we are going to look at a man, in fact, a ruler of the world, who had a troubling dream. We will see how this dream actually came true and look at the results of our Precious God’s use of this means of communication.
Pride will destroy you. Write it down and post it around everywhere to remind you. Search it out in your hearts and get rid of it as quickly as you can. Let me ask you plain and simple this question, if our Holy God hates something, will you make sure you are not doing it? In the book of Proverbs chapter 6 we read about some things our Lord hates, “16 These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.”
Nebuchadnezzar’s pride was dealt with big time by our Holy King of kings. As we begin Nebuchadnezzar has come through the correction by our Lord and has been restored. In gratitude he starts off his communication to his subjects by giving credit and praise to the One Who had Mercy on him – “1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. 2 I thought it good to declare the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me. 3 How great are His signs, and how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation.”
Nebuchadnezzar was the top man in all the world. He had everything that man could ever want. At his word people could be killed or given awards and promotions. He was the leader of the known world and he was sitting around just thinking about his prosperity and how great he was – “4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.”
But as you know, in life, the good pleasurable time will come to an end. It began by God giving the king of Babylon a troubling dream.
Have you ever had one of those where you remember it, but cannot really understand why? Here the king was perplexed also over its meaning – “5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.”
I find the next few verses confusing. Let us look at them and you think why this would be so? Take a guess? – “6 Therefore I issued a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. 7 Then the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in, and I told them the dream; but they did not make known to me its interpretation.”
If you remember back in chapter 2 the king used almost the same way to find out his dream. In the end it was Daniel who was told the dream by El Shaddai – God Almighty. So, why didn’t the king just call for Daniel to give him the interpretation of his dream?
I can take a few guesses as to why this might have happened.
1. It was possible that there was an entirely new group of wise men. Daniel was set over this profession, so he was instrumental in fine tuning these wise men more efficient and effective.
2. Nebuchadnezzar was more mature and had accepted their counsel
3. Daniel may have been out of town and not available to be called upon.
4. The dream here occurred 30 years after the first dream and the past was forgotten
This I believe is the reason why even after the wise men could not advise the king, Nebuchadnezzar sent out his request to call Daniel to his aide – “8 But at last Daniel came before me (his name is Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god; in him is the Spirit of the Holy God), and I told the dream before him, saying: 9 “Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the Spirit of the Holy God is in you, and no secret troubles you, explain to me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.”
For our benefit our Precious Holy Spirit allows us to step back in time into this pagan king’s throne room and hear his explanation to Daniel of his dream.
17 ‘ This decision is by the decree of the watchers, and the sentence by the word of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will, and sets over it the lowest of men.’
Our Holy Master displays His message to king Nebuchadnezzar first in the description of a great and beautiful tree –“10 “These were the visions of my head while on my bed: I was looking, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. 11 The tree grew and became strong; Its height reached to the heavens, and it could be seen to the ends of all the earth. 12 Its leaves were lovely, its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. The beasts of the field found shade under it, the birds of the heavens dwelt in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.”
Trees provided good illustrations and were regularly used in antiquity to illustrate royalty. Our Lord used a similar dream with Pharaoh. We read this in the book of Ezekiel chapter 31, “1 Now it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude: ‘ Whom are you like in your greatness? 3 Indeed Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, with fine branches that shaded the forest, and of high stature; And its top was among the thick boughs. 4 The waters made it grow; Underground waters gave it height, with their rivers running around the place where it was planted, and sent out rivulets to all the trees of the field. 5 ‘ Therefore its height was exalted above all the trees of the field; Its boughs were multiplied, and its branches became long because of the abundance of water, as it sent them out. 6 All the birds of the heavens made their nests in its boughs; Under its branches all the beasts of the field brought forth their young; And in its shadow all great nations made their home. 7 ‘ Thus it was beautiful in greatness and in the length of its branches, because its roots reached to abundant waters. 8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; The fir trees were not like its boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like its branches; No tree in the garden of God was like it in beauty. 9 I made it beautiful with a multitude of branches, so that all the trees of Eden envied it, that were in the garden of God.’ 10 “Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Because you have increased in height, and it set its top among the thick boughs, and its heart was lifted up in its height, 11 therefore I will deliver it into the hand of the mighty one of the nations, and he shall surely deal with it; I have driven it out for its wickedness. 12 And aliens, the most terrible of the nations, have cut it down and left it; its branches have fallen on the mountains and in all the valleys; its boughs lie broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the peoples of the earth have gone from under its shadow and left it. 13 ‘ On its ruin will remain all the birds of the heavens, and all the beasts of the field will come to its branches— 14 ‘So that no trees by the waters may ever again exalt themselves for their height, nor set their tops among the thick boughs, that no tree which drinks water may ever be high enough to reach up to them.‘ For they have all been delivered to death, to the depths of the earth, among the children of men who go down to the Pit.’
The Bible says that there is much wisdom through many counselors. Too bad Pharaoh did not have someone familiar with the Scriptures. This advisor could have reminded the king of Egypt that something similar happen to the great king Nebuchadnezzar and the end was successful, so do like wise. Instead Pharaoh did not do the same things and you see his outcome.
Now here is something that many people either overlook or do not give it the attention that they should. It is this, we are being ‘watched’ - 13 “I saw in the visions of my head while on my bed, and there was a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven.
Soon we will be at chapter 7 where we will read how the court of our Holy God are watching all out activities. Now, that is a scary thing to contemplate, “ 9 “ I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire; 10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.”
One of these ‘watchers’ or messenger is sent from the throne room to proclaim that the tree would be cut down to a stump – ‘14 He cried aloud and said thus: ‘Chop down the tree and cut off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. 16 Let his heart be changed from that of a man, let him be given the heart of a beast, and let seven times pass over him.’
The total destruction of the tree apart from the stump is made quite clear in full detail. The tree is to lose all its ability to give benefit. The bands around the tree were often put round a stump to prevent it from splitting. Here, it is probably to be seen as God’s guarantee that the stump will be preserved and survive. The dew, and his being with the beasts, picture degradation and loss. The loss of a man’s heart and its being replaced by a beast indicates loss of rationalism, and beastly behavior.
Let us stop here and reflect for a moment. Let me ask you to examine your own lives. Perhaps God has used something to knock you down also. Please remember that the stump shows hope that you will grow again if you get right with the Lord. It is that simple. For this is also what our Lord explains as to the purpose of this action against Nebuchadnezzar – ‘17 ‘ This decision is by the decree of the watchers, and the sentence by the word of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will, and sets over it the lowest of men.’
18 “This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.”
Nebuchadnezzar now appeals to Daniel to help him by interpreting the dream. He is fearful because he thinks it concerns himself, and he is desperate because he wants reassurance. The last dream he and Daniel went over didn’t turn out too bad, but this one had him more concerned – ‘18 “This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Now you, Belteshazzar, declare its interpretation, since all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able, for the Spirit of the Holy God is in you.”
I greatly admire Daniel. In my prayers I ask God for this, ‘my Father Adoni Yahweh, my Lord, Savior, and Master Adoni Yeshua, my King Jesus Christ, my precious Holy Spirit, please treat me like your friendship with Abraham and Moses. Give me the same love that you gave to David and Daniel, and allow me to have the power to serve you and help others in the gifts you gave Elijah and Elisha.’ Do you think I am asking too much?
Daniel loved this king. I believe he is the one who took personal care of Nebuchadnezzar while he was insane. When the king gave Daniel the facts of his dream, Daniel was very upset and it was evident to Nebuchadnezzar. It was clear to him that Daniel did not want to give him its meaning. I believe that the king thought greatly of Daniel and assured him to tell all the facts – ‘19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for a time, and his thoughts troubled him. So the king spoke, and said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation trouble you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, may the dream concern those who hate you, and its interpretation concern your enemies!’
Put yourself in Nebuchadnezzar position. If you just heard, before the explanation the words, ‘may this dream be for those who hate you,’ oh, oh. What is coming now?
The tree represented all that Nebuchadnezzar would ever seek to attain. He was powerful and strong, having grown tall and famous. He was the ruler and somewhat feeder and protector of all the world. – ‘20 “The tree that you saw, which grew and became strong, whose height reached to the heavens and which could be seen by all the earth, 21 whose leaves were lovely and its fruit abundant, in which was food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and in whose branches the birds of the heaven had their home— 22 it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown and reaches to the heavens, and your dominion to the end of the earth.’
The decree from heaven will not be altered or changed. It will happen. Because of his pride he did not humble himself before the only real God Who controls all the world. Because he would not humbly submit all honor and glory to the One Greater than himself, Nebuchadnezzar will be humiliated and will not be a king in all his earthly majesty but a mere animal – ‘23 “And inasmuch as the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave its stump and roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field; let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let him graze with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him’; 24 this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king: 25 They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.’
However, to show you king Nebuchadnezzar that the Supreme Ruler Is a Good and Merciful Ruler, He will give back your sanity and allow you to regain your rule – ‘26 “And inasmuch as they gave the command to leave the stump and roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be assured to you, after you come to know that Heaven rules. 27 Therefore, O king, let my advice be acceptable to you; break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.”
Dear friends, the same message that Daniel informed king Nebuchadnezzar I cry out to you also, ‘break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.”
A change of life might bring mercy from our God to you also.
I believe that we will run into Nebuchadnezzar in Heaven. For here we read of his conversion.
28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar.
Do you remember back in the book of Jonah where this prophet was instructed by God that the city of Nineveh was going to be destroyed in 40 days. From the kings even down to the animals repented of their sins. Now, did God change His command that the city would be destroyed? No, in His Mercy He delayed the fulfillment of its action for over 100 years. What a Holy God we have. However, when new generations rose up they failed to maintain their ancestors commitment to obey God and therefore the destruction was acted upon them.
Here in Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar after awhile forgot Daniel’s warning and his pride kicked back in and he therefore suffered the predicted consequences, - ‘28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.” 33 That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.’
This part we see, that once freed from our own insanity of lives of sin, we similarly respond with praise to God – ‘34 And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever:’
Now king Nebuchadnezzar recognized the Sovereignty of God – “For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation. 35 All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, “What have You done?”
And what a faithful God we have, for He keeps His promises. He restored him to his leadership position again – ‘36 At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and splendor returned to me. My counselors and nobles resorted to me, I was restored to my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me.’
And look at how Nebuchadnezzar realized why all this came upon him, - ‘37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down.’
May we all take to heart the importance of this man’s discipline so that we can also learn and pursue the right course of obedience for our own lives.
