The LEGACY Of UNREPENTANCE-IV— Genesis 4:16-24

Likewise we will leave a legacy to our families. But what of any value will they receive?

Background:

We have examined Cain’s willful disdain of God’s direction for his life, & discovered the ‘Tragedy of Unrepentance’(4:1-15).

We are now in the midst of examining the descendants of Cain & the resulting transfer of belief.

“the genealogy[:16-24] shows how sin disqualified Cain's line as the people of blessing”..... God blesses the line of Cain. But notice, He blesses them in a temporal way. That is, only connected to time. Only in the physical were they blessed; not in the sense of the spiritual, or that which is eternal.”—John MacArthur

“Secular culture is a provision from God for man's life. It is a common grace.”.....“And that contributes to communication, it contributes to culture, it contributes to society.”—John MacArthur

Cain’s legacy was a spiritually derelict/deficient progeny.

Personal unrepentance leaves a legacy of spiritually dereliction/deficiency.

What does a spiritually deficient legacy seek?

8 desires/determinations of a spiritually deficient/derelict population.

In previous weeks we have found that Spiritually deficient populations seek some of the same things Christians seek...

1. SEPARATION/Segregation(:16)

2. STABILITY/Family(:17-18)

3. SATISFACTION(:19)

Last time we also discovered the innovative genius of that unrepentant population included:

PLEASURE(:22b)

Explanation: (:22b) Comfortable

:22b—“And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze & iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.”

There is nothing wrong with seeking pleasure....As long as the pleasure comes by the Lord’s will/desire for you.

God does not want us to be self-indulgent hedonists so that anything goes as long as pleasure becomes paramount...So that we cannot find happiness unless we ‘feel’ good, & our bodies, work, relationships are ‘pain-free.’ This is unachievable & self-serving anyway!

“Naamah”—hmen nah-am-aw'—Naamah = "loveliness." Strong—Pleasantness.

Argumentation:

Negative:

Lk. 15:13—““And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, & there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.”

Lk. 12:16-21—“Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. “And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ “So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns & build greater, & there I will store all my crops & my goods. ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, & be merry.”’ “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, & is not rich toward God.””

1Tim. 5:6—“But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.”

Js. 5:5—“You have lived on the earth in pleasure & luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.”

2Tim. 3:1-5—“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”

Titus 3:3—“For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts & pleasures, living in malice & envy, hateful & hating one another.”

Positive:

Ps. 16:11—“You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Ps. 36:7-9—“How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.”

Mat. 14:25-30—“Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him & said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; & beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!””

Peter took pleasure in following Jesus.

2Cor. 12:7-10—“And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Heb. 11:24-26—“By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.”

Heb. 12:9-11—“Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, & we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits & live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

Js. 4:1-4—“Where do wars & fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust & do not have. You murder & covet & cannot obtain. You fight & war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask & do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. Adulterers & adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

Rev. 18:1-5—“After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, & the earth was illuminated with his glory. And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, & has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, & a cage for every unclean & hated bird! For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, & the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.” And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, & lest you receive of her plagues. For her sins have reached to heaven, & God has remembered her iniquities.”

America’s obsession with pleasure—comfort-ease—New gods/

Marriages fall apart because couples enter into it for themselves only!

Sexual pervesions are becoming more & more commonplace today.

American Christian Indebtedness statistics from Brian Kluth of MaximumGenerosity.org:

Mortgages, car payments, & unpaid credit card balances are the most common forms of debt.

· 17% of households are 100% debt-free & 29% have no debt beyond their mortgage

· 64% have mortgage payments

· 36% have car payments

· 31% have unpaid credit card balances (beyond 30 days old)

· 18% have medical bills

· 18% have student loans

· 14% have home equity loans

· 12% have personal/family loans

· 6% have retail/electronic loans

· 3% have investment debt

When asked how much it would take to be debt-free (except for a mortgage):

· 20% would need $10,000 or less to pay off their debts.

· 21% would need $10,000 to $50,000 to pay off their debts.

· 20% would need $50,000 to $100,000 or more to pay off their debts.

A Lifetime of Debt: The Average American’s Financial Journey

The first payment-based debt for the average American is incurred while still in high school. Many more debt obligations can be expected after that time.

The Department Store Card

Interest rates on department store cards can be as high as 33 percent. Over 173 million Americans own at least one credit card. Target is in the top 10 issuers of credit cards.

The First Credit Card

The average rate for standard bank credit cards is around 19 percent. Only 2 percent of undergrads have no credit history. The average undergrad has $3,200 in credit card debt. Eighty-four percent of college students have credit cards. Half of all college graduates have four or more credit cards. The average graduate student has $8,600 owing on his or her credit cards.

The Undergraduate Student Loan

The average student amasses over $20,000 in student debt toward his or her first degree.

The Graduate Student Loan

On average, master’s degree students take on an additional $17,000 in student loans. Doctoral students amass another $29,000. Med School graduates leave school with an average of $113K in debt.

The Next Credit Card

Three-fourths of American households have multiple credit cards.

The Auto Loan

The average auto loan is $30,738, a 40 percent rise in the last 10 years. Most auto loans are over six years in length. This is double the loan term of a typical auto loan 25 years ago. The average auto loan interest rate varies between 7 and 9 percent.

The Mortgage

The average home mortgage costs about $240,000. After 30 years of making payments, a homeowner with a $240,000 mortgage loan will have paid over $580,000 on his or her house.

The Second or Third Auto Loan

Two-thirds of all American households own two or more automobiles. Most Americans use loans to finance every vehicle they drive.

More Credit Cards

By age 60, the average American has five or more credit cards. The median credit limit on family credit cards in America is $18,000. The average balance per household in America with credit card debt is $10,637.

The Refinance

Refinancing a mortgage is often an attempt to consolidate overwhelming debt from a variety of sources. On average, about half of refinances result in a higher overall loan amount. The average American has a total of 13 credit obligations right now. Over a lifetime, the average American will pay over $600,000 in interest.

JUSTICE(:23-24)

Explanation: (:23-24)

:23—“Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah & Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me.”

Lamech made sure his wives knew that he would retaliate personal wrongful(assumed) injury, essentially taking the law? into his own hands(Vigilante justice). He would not tolerate wrongful personal injury.

It is possible that Lamech recognized tensions in his own family, due to their marital compromise(polygamy), which may have been directed toward himself. He would have directed this statement toward them in order to quell such discontent.

It is also possible that Lamech’s statement was meant to free Adah & Zillah from worry, as they were ensured of their protection & safety in Lamech’s determination for swift retaliation.

Though Lamech’s injury came by a mere youth/boy, there is no excuse for wrongful personal injury & it will be met with or retaliated by death. A “boy” could very possibly have been a warrior in training. Regardless, he would have been very viril as anyone would be who lived such a long life—borne out in Chapt. 5.

Early on, mankind is already at odds with himself. He now must find a way to circumvent it. Of course Cain is the true innovator/instigator of such conflict.

English definitions:

Justice—Just behavior or treatment; 2)The quality of being fair & reasonable; 3)The administration of the law or authority in maintaining this.—New Ox. Am. Dic.

Mer-Web.—1a : The maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments;.... c : The administration of law; especially : the establishment or determination of rights according to the rules of law or equity; 2a: The quality of being just, impartial, or fair; b(i)The principle or ideal of just dealing or right action (ii)Conformity to this principle or ideal : righteousness; c: The quality of conforming to law; 3: Conformity to truth, fact, or reason : correctness.—Mer-Web

Just—Adj.—‘based on or behaving according to what is morally right & fair.’—New Ox. Am. Dic.

Mer-Web—1a: Having a basis in or conforming to fact or reason : reasonable.....c : Conforming to a standard of correctness : proper; 2a(i) : Acting or being in conformity with what is morally upright or good : righteous (ii): Being what is merited : deserved; b: Legally correct : lawful.

?How do we decide the ‘just-ness’ of an action? It must ultimately come down to God’s determination!

“Hear/Listen”—emv shaw-mah'—1) To hear, listen to, obey; 2)Sound.

“Listen/Hearken/Give heed/Hear”—Nza aw-zan'—1) To hear, listen—1a) (Hiphil)—1a1) To hear, listen, give ear, 1a2) To be obedient, harken, 1a3) To hear or listen to prayers (of God). Strong—a primitive root; probably to expand; To broaden out the ear (with the hand), i.e. (by implication) To listen.

“Killed”(See :25)—grh haw-rag'—1) To kill, slay, murder, destroy, murderer, slayer, out of hand. Strong-a primitive root; To smite with deadly intent.

“Wounding”—eup peh'-tsah—1) Bruise, wound.

From—eup paw-tsah'— a primitive root; to split, i.e. wound.

“Young man/Boy”—dly yeh'-led—1) Child, son, boy, offspring, youth. Strong—Something born, i.e. A lad or offspring.

“Hurting/Striking/Injuring”—hrwbx khab-boo-raw'—1) Bruise, stripe, wound, blow.

:24—“If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.””

Lamech saw his actions as completely justified, whereas Cain’s were unjustified. Thereby his statement of “seventy-sevenfold.” He no doubt, felt His distant God would nod in approval.

Yet he appears to be a braggart. The spirit within which any legal action is conducted speaks to its justice or lack thereof.

Lamech then compares his situation to that of Cain. He bragged on the fact that even Cain(Lamech’s descendant) had protection from God though he had cold-heartedly murdered his brother.

Lamech reasoned & bragged that if revenge/vengeance against Cain, as a ‘murderer’ of one man, was to be avenged sevenfold, then anyone taking revenge/vengeance against Lamech(as a punisher of a man for his wrongful actions—carrying out self &/or civil defense), should carry a price seventy times greater than anyone seeking Cain’s life. Lamech looked to Cain’s protection(from God) as a license to punish personal injury by execution. It appears that YaHWeH did not directly inform Lamech in this decision, as He had Cain.

The ‘70 X 7’ seems to be a way of declaring a comparison of infinitely greater importance as did Jesus when recanting Peter’s question about forgiveness. It may well also be Jesus’ way of stating the exceeding value of forgiveness over self-determined judgment & self-justification.

Mat. 18:21-22—“Then Peter came to Him & said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, & I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”

This may also be a description of Lamech as the initiator/innovator of civil/secular law.

He is minimally seeking to answer, reward or retaliate evil, though he himself is unrepentant. Even civilizations without Christ, have means in place for handling retribution/vengeance/pay back!

Rom. 13:1-5—“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, & the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, & those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, & you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake.”

We have governments with their courts & laws & judges & lawyers to interpret it all! We all claim to want justice!

“Avenged”—Mqn naw-kam'—1) To avenge, take vengeance, revenge, avenge oneself, be avenged, be punished. Strong—a primitive root; To grudge, i.e. Avenge or punish.

Argumentation:

Amos 5:6-7, 20-24—“Seek the LORD & live, Lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph, And devour it, With no one to quench it in Bethel-- You who turn justice to wormwood, And lay righteousness to rest in the earth!””.....“Is not the day of the LORD darkness, & not light? Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it? “I hate, I despise your feast days, And I do not savor your sacred assemblies. Though you offer Me burnt offerings & your grain offerings, I will not accept them, Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings. Take away from Me the noise of your songs, For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments. But let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream.”

God is just in all his dealings!

Prov. 21:2-3—“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts. To do righteousness & justice Is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.”

Ps. 25:8-9—“Good & upright is the LORD; Therefore He teaches sinners in the way. The humble He guides in justice, And the humble He teaches His way.”

Mk. 12:28-34—“Then one of the scribes came, & having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first commandment of all?” Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. ‘And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, & with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. “And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, & there is no other but He. “And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, & with all the strength, & to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings & sacrifices.” Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” But after that no one dared question Him.”

Mk. 11:25-26—““And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.””

Rom. 12:19-21—“Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Col. 3:12-14—“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy & beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, & forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.” Illustration:

FREEDOM(:25-26)

Explanation: (:23-24)

:25—“And Adam knew his wife again, & she bore a son & named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.””

Now the action shifts back to Adam & Eve. Eve gives birth to another child & “named him Seth.” Seth was the replacement for “Abel” who had been killed by their first-born son, “Cain.”

There is no discussion given as to Eve’s heartbreak concerning Abel’s murder. But her new son is “appointed” for her “instead of Abel.” Seth is indeed a gift of God intended “for” Eve. Seth is “another seed” from YaHWeH. Thus it appears that YaHWeH intends for Eve to produce “seed” who will in turn reproduce her commitment to Him...Borne out in :25—5:32.

Eve bears Seth after Abel’s death. Abel was an adult with an occupation as a “keeper of sheep”(Gen. 4:2) when he was murdered.

“Knew”(See :17)—edy yaw-dah'—1) To know. Strong—a primitive root; To know (properly, to ascertain by seeing); used in a great variety of senses, figuratively, literally, euphemistically & inferentially (including observation, care, recognition; & causatively, instruction, designation, punishment, etc.).

“Seth”—tv shayth—Seth = "compensation." Strong— Put, i.e. Substituted.

From—tyv shiyth— a primitive root; to place, put, set(in a very wide application)—Here: “Appointed”

“Another”—rxa akh-air'—1) Another, other, following—1a) Following, further, 1b) Other, different.

“Seed”—erz zeh'-rah—1) Seed, sowing, offspring.

“Killed”(See :23)—grh haw-rag'—1) To kill, slay, murder, destroy, murderer, slayer, out of hand. Strong-a primitive root; To smite with deadly intent.

:26—“And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; & he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD.”

Seth became the father of “Enosh.”

With Enosh’s birth, or rather thru the lineage of Seth, men now begin to call upon “the name” of YaHWeH. This is not mere occasional mention of YaHWeH’s name as in Cain’s lineage—[Note—1)Mehujael = “smitten by God” & 2)Methusael = “who is of God.”] The word translated “began” signifies a boring or prying initiative. Thus this line’s “call” is an authentic seeking after YaHWeH’s will. Thru the Sethites(Enoshites) YaHWeH has produced a viable transferable witness.

This assumes that Cain’s line did not call on the name of YaHWeH. They did not see fit to profess the personal God, whom Cain had rejected.

This is a telling & pivotal statement & one which definitively sets apart &/or reveals the polarity between the 2 lineages of Cain over against that of his brother Seth.

There is indeed hope for mankind in Seth/Enosh!

“Enosh”—vwna 'Enowsh—Enos = "man." Strong—properly, A mortal (& thus differing from the more dignified Mda aw-dawm'); hence, A man in general (singly or collectively).

“Began”—llx khaw-lal'—1) To profane, defile, pollute, desecrate, begin. Strong—a primitive root; properly, To bore, i.e. (by implication) To wound, to dissolve; figuratively, To profane (a person, place or thing), To break (one's word), To begin (as if by an "opening wedge"); denom. To play (the flute).

“Call”—arq kaw-raw'—1) To call, call out, recite, read, cry out, proclaim. Strong—a primitive root [rather identical with arq through the idea of accosting a person met]; To call out to (i.e. properly, Address by name, but used in a wide variety of applications).

“Name”—Mv shem—1) Name—1a) Name, 1b) Reputation, fame, glory, 1c) the Name (as designation of God), 1d) Memorial, monument. Strong—An appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication Honor, authority, character.

Argumentation:

Jn. 14:5-6—“Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, & how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, & the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Jn. 8:31-36—“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, & the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, & have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Rom. 8:1-2, :-14-17—“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin & death.”.....“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, & if children, then heirs--heirs of God & joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”

Gal. 4:1-7—“Now I say that the heir, as long as he is a child, does not differ at all from a slave, though he is master of all, but is under guardians & stewards until the time appointed by the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, & if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”
