Romans 6:1-23.....It's All About New Life
Before we get started in our lesson today, let's look at 2 words in the Bible and Justification and Sanctification.
What are the meaning?
Justification: is a act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ, and accounts, accepts, and treats them as righteous in the eye of the law....or 10 commandments that we couldn't live by.
We were given the death sentence and separated from God because Adam sinned and was disobedient and that was passed down through the human race to us.
The only way to mend the relationship with God and get forgiveness of sins is to believe on the Lord Jesus and He sends the Holy Spirit and we receive Him and that is how and the only way we can be Justified. Justified is God's grace on mankind an act of God.
Sanctification: Justification is for us; sanctification is in us. Justification declares the sinner righteous;
Sanctification makes the sinner righteous.
Justification removes the guilt and penalty of sin; Sanctification removes the growth and the power of sin.
God is both an exterior and interior decorator.
He is an exterior decorator in that He enables us to stand before Him because He has paid the penalty and removed the guilt of sin from us.
But He is also an interior decorator. He moves into our hearts and lives by the power of the Holy Spirit to make us the kind of Christians we should be...that's sanctification..that's the end result of justification...filled with the Spirit...is fully sanctified...Don't know about you but, He still working on me.
Remember I said that Paul's writing here in Romans it would bless us and step on our toes...well ..we should have wore safety shoes today...steal toed shoes.
Last week we talked about the Benefits of our salvation
and Paul didn't mention how a saint should live...now look at what he says in chapter 6 and verse 1 What shall we say then?
About what?....our salvation..we say Halleluiah well then...
Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? verse 2
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
How can we who died to sin keep sinning..our old self was crucified with Christ ..how can we who were baptized or I believe Paul means identified in His death...keep living our old self?
We who are set apart, justified by Christ...Sanctified by the Holy Spirit ....showed grace by an act of God by giving His Son to die in our place...keep willfully sinning? But, we do!
*************************Living With Christ
Romans 6:5-11
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
We now know the truth and the truth is when we accept Jesus as our Saviour...we will also be raised in His glorious likeness.
Let's look at ....
1 Corinthians 15:51-58 (KJV)
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
Knowing all this ..believing it...basing it on our eternal life and we still sin?
*******************
Romans 6:12-14 (KJV)
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
But that doesn't give us a license to sin...our old self must die with Jesus.
We are to know God’s method of making a sinner the kind of person He wants us to be....I may sound like a broke record but,
Justification declared us righteous, removed the guilt of sin, it did not change us....it made us righteous before God..we are still sinners....the Holy Spirit sanctifies us.
It gave us a new nature. Now we know that we are buried with Christ and raised with Him. God wants us to live in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 6:15-16 (KJV)
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Romans 6:22-23 (KJV)
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The whole conclusion of our justification by the Lord Jesus....is it OK to sin all we want to because we are justified by Jesus?
Paul said God forbid...he said that in verse 1 remember?
The Christian life is not following certain rules; you can follow rules and regulations and still not be living the Christian life.
You might ask.. “Then what is the Christian life?”
The Christian life is to be obedient unto Christ.
It means communication with Christ.
Do you love Him? That’s the important thing.
Jesus says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments”
(John 14:15
Obedience to Christ is the experience of sanctification, and that is practical sanctification. It is just as simple as that.
It is not how you walk, but where you walk—are you walking in the light, walking in fellowship with Christ?
Sin will break the fellowship, of course, and then we are to confess our sin because He is faithful and just to forgive us.
