A young lawyer was setting himself up in his first private practice. As he sat in his office, which was basically bare except for his desk with a telephone on it and a book case filled with important-looking legal books, he wondered how long it would be before he got his first client.
Then, as luck would have it, he saw a man across the road cross the street and stride towards his front door. Feeling nervous and wanting to make a good impression on the working class man, he quickly picked up the phone receiver and began talking to an imaginary client on the phone. The man, now standing in the office in front of his desk, waited several minutes while he concluded his conversation with this very important client.
Finally after ending the conversation, he looked up at the man, now directly in front of his desk and with an air of superiority said to the man "Can I help you?"
The man looked at the young lawyer and without missing a beat said "I’m from the phone company. I’m here to connect your phone."
We face a dilemma: 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5.16
5"And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Matthew 6.5-6
The key is our intentions -- not just appearances
Numbers 15.37-41
Tallit – Prayer Shawl
Worn by Yeshua – 44She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. Luke 8.44
The little girl -- 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, "Talitha cumi," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." 42And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. Mark 5.41-42
I. A Generational Reminder (15.37-38)
A. A Physical Pedigree is not Enough
1. Easy to rest on the past – Luke 3.7-9
7He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."
2. Display of Sabbath-Circumcision-Kashrut
B. Faith in God is Essential
And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness. Genesis 15.6
Place of infant baptism????
C. Power in Passing on Faith
1. Parents to Children
a. Training for God – 4"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6.4-9; Ephesians 6.1-4
b. Not an institutional responsibility
2. Outreach Efforts – 2 Timothy 2.1-2
1You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Making Disciples – Rabbinic approach – the imposition to our time
3. Community Aspects of Faith
Don’t live in a vacuum – Navel reminds us of our attachment to another
Continue an attachment – Americans/OK/Family/Church/etc.
Church – Acts 2.42-47
42And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
A new Gallup study commissioned by Group Publishing shows that people with close friendships in their church are very satisfied with their congregation, less likely to leave their place of worship, and have a strong friendship with God. Church members who have a best friend at church are 21% more likely to report attending at least once a week and 26% more likely to report having a strong, more active faith in God. 77% of highly satisfied members have eaten a meal with fellow congregants (who are not members of their family) at some point over the last year. Only 56% of somewhat satisfied or dissatisfied members have shared a meal together. Mealtime fellowship appears strongly correlated with high levels of congregational satisfaction. 62% of those who eat meals together report regularly spending time in prayer and worship daily vs. 49% who have not eaten meals with other church members.
II. A Godly Relationship/Tie In (15.39-41)
Zig Ziglar says he looked into a mirror one day & realized he needed to lose a lot of weight. He really wanted to get in shape. As an incentive, he put a picture of a thin man on the refrigerator door. There are all kinds of gimmicks offered as motivators to dieting. You can purchase sound tracks that laugh at you & call you "fatso" when you open the refrigerator door! But Ziglar wanted a positive reinforcement, so he put a picture of what he wanted to look like on the refrigerator. That constant reminder was the first step toward a healthier body for him.//Lord's Supper at church//Rainbow//
A. Reminders of the One God
His Name; His 613 Commands; His Presence/covering// Gematria – symbolism in letters and numbers
No numbers in Hebrew – Numeric equivalents come from letters
God = the Sum Total of the Law – Torah
“Tzitzit = 600
Double knots – 5
Strands of string – 8
Total 613 (Number of commands in Tanakh)
Knots Display His Word – 5 Knots = 5 Books of Moses
John Hagee said, “The word you memorize is the word you utilize.”
Windings between the knots Display His Name
3I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them. Exodus 6.3
First – 7
Second – 8
Third – 11
Fourth – 13
First + Second (15) = YH (Masculine aspect of God’s name)
Third (11) = WH (Feminine aspect – El Shaddai)
Fourth (13) = numerical equivalent to the word, “Echad” (ONE in Hebrew)
Also Four Spaces between the knots -- YHWH
Another interesting thing to point out is that if you add all the coils together (7+8+11+13) you get a total of 39. Why is this important?
Though it can’t be proven in scripture, it is believed that Jesus was whipped 39 times. In the Bible, 39 is the number for disease. In the Old Testament there are 39 diseases mentioned. In 1 Peter 2:24 we are told that by His stripes we are healed. Therefore, by being beaten 39 times, Jesus essentially conquered every single disease known.
B. Reminders of Our Position
9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2.9-10
Royalty
Priesthood
C. Reminders of Our Perspective
1. Personal Goals – Keep Commands
2. Personal Commitment to God – Exodus 19.6
6and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel."
Numbers 15.41
3. Public Display of Faith
God’s Representative
Declaration to Others
American Christians tend to think of faith as primarily Personal more than Interpersonal
It is essential to begin with the personal relationship with God – Micah 6.8
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the LORD require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
It does not stay personal – it includes community – Family/Friends/Neighbors/Enemies
What if God required us to wear something to display our faith?
Embarrassed?
Afraid?
Excited?
Routine?
Wait, he does give us something to wear/display – Galatians 3.27
27For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
THE FOUR SHAM PILLARS
In 1689 the architect Sir Christopher Wren designed the interior of Windsor Town Hall near London. He built a ceiling supported by pillars. After city fathers had inspected the finished building, they decided the ceiling would not stay up, and so they ordered Wren to put in some more pillars.
England's greatest architect didn't think the ceiling needed any more support, so he pulled a fast one. He added four pillars that did not do anything; in fact, they don't even reach the ceiling.
The optical illusion fooled the municipal authorities, and today the four sham pillars amuse many a tourist.
We are to be genuine/no pretense in Jesus (Yeshua)!
