A MINISTRY of RESTORATIVE PRAYER-II—James 5:13-20

Attention:

I returned to my parents' home to attend a funeral. At the church, my mother led me to a man who looked vaguely familiar. "Barbara, remember Pastor Green?" she asked as she left me in his company.

I frantically tried to place him, & suddenly it came to me. He was the kind man who, five years earlier, had officiated at my grandmother's funeral. "It's good to see you again, Pastor," I said. "Though I wish it weren't always under such tragic circumstances."

The pastor looked perplexed but uttered some words of consolation before he was called away. A few minutes later, I rejoined my mother.

"Imagine,"she whispered, "after all this time, to run into the pastor who performed your wedding!"

Relationship Restored

Need:

Some of our membership get ‘out of sorts’ with the rest of us. They seem to drop out, don’t stay involved as they used to.

Some just seem to need help that I know the Lord can provide. Why does this happen? But more importantly, Can it be stopped?

In order for James’ audience to experience the fullness of life in Christ, a ministry of restorative prayer must characterize a congregation.

James wanted his audience to consider the gravity of restorative prayer.

The true Church must manifest/demonstrate/a ministry of restorative prayer.

Why must the true Church manifest/demonstrate a ministry of restorative prayer?

6 provisions of the ministry of restorative prayer.

TRUST(:16)

Explanation: (:16)

:16—“Confess your trespasses to one another, & pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

A further healthy practice for the Christian to be whole(:15) involves our confessing personal lapses in faith to “one another.” This will bring about the faithful Christian’s wholeness.

Indeed, the prayer of a “righteous” person truly is active/effective/or works. In fact it accomplishes a great deal, which cannot be done in our own strength. It must bring God’s power into play.

Only 5 Greek words bear out the thought of this 2nd sentence—polu iscuei dehsiv dikaiou energoumenh. It is translated into English using 9-10 words. Meaning....‘The supplication of a righteous(man) has much force, as it works.’

If we do not TRUST one another with our needs, then we forego the prayers of others. True, we cannot trust every issue with just anybody.

Many, consider anything outside of general public knowledge to be too personal. Thus no one seeks God for their healing & no one can help them with their pain/joy. Openly owning our sin(s) before our brothers & sisters in Christ & allowing their intervention, is vital to the solution.

“Confess”—exomologew—1) To confess; 2) To profess—2a) Acknowledge openly & joyfully, 2b) To one's honor: to celebrate, give praise to, 2c) To profess that one will do something, to promise, agree, engage. Strong—To acknowledge or (by implication of assent) agree fully:-- Confess, profess, promise.

“Trespasses/Faults/Sins”—paraptwma—1) To fall beside or near something; 2) A lapse or deviation from truth & uprightness—2a) A sin, misdeed. Paraptwma is used in different senses, sometimes in a milder sense, denoting an error, a mistake, a fault; & sometimes meaning a trespass, a willful sin. Strong—A side-slip (lapse or deviation), i.e. (unintentional) error or (wilful) transgression:-- Fall, fault, offence, sin, trespass.

“Pray”(See :13, 14)—eucomai—V.—1) To pray to God; 2) To wish, to pray, to pray for. Strong—middle voice of a primary verb; To wish; by implication, To pray to God:-- Pray, will, wish.

“Present middle imperative. Keep this up.”—RWP

“Healed”—iaomai—1) To cure, heal; 2) To make whole—2a) To free from errors & sins, to bring about (one's) salvation. Strong—To cure (literally or figuratively):-- Heal, make whole.

“Probably of bodily healing (verse 14), though iaomai is used also of healing of the soul”—RWP

“Effective/Effectual”—energew(Eng.—‘energy’)—Present Middle Participle Infinitive Sing. Fem.—1) To be operative, be at work, put forth power—1a) To work for one, aid one; 2) to effect; 3) To display one's activity, show one's self operative. ='In its working'

“Fervent Prayer/Prayer”—dehsiv—1) Need, indigence, want, privation, penury; 2) A seeking, asking, entreating, entreaty to God or to man. Dehsiv is petitionary, proseuch is a word of sacred character, being limited to prayer to God, whereas dehsiv may also be used of a request addressed to man. Enteuxiv expresses confiding access to God, dehsiv gives prominence to the expression of personal need. Strong—A petition:-- Prayer, request, supplication.

“Righteous”—dikaiov—Adj.—1) Righteous, observing divine laws. Strong—Equitable (in character or act); by implication, Innocent, holy (absolutely or relatively):-- Just, meet, right(-eous).

“Avails/Accomplish/Powerful”—iscuw—1) To be strong—1a) To be strong in body, to be robust, to be in sound health; 2) To have power—2a) To have power as shown by extraordinary deeds—2a1) To exert, wield power, to have strength to overcome, 2b) To be a force, avail, 2c) To be serviceable, 2d) To be able, can. Strong—To have (or exercise) force (literally or figuratively):-- Be able, avail, can do([-not]), could, be good, might, prevail, be of strength, be whole, + much work.

“Has much force”—RWP

Argumentation:

Mat. 18:15—““Moreover if your brother sins against you, go & tell him his fault between you & him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.”

Acts 19:13-20—“Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. And the evil spirit answered & said, “Jesus I know, & Paul I know; but who are you?” Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, & prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked & wounded. This became known both to all Jews & Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; & fear fell on them all, & the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. And many who had believed came confessing & telling their deeds. Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together & burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, & it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord grew mightily & prevailed.”

1Jn. 1:8-2:2—“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, & the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful & just to forgive us our sins & to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, & His word is not in us. My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, & not for ours only but also for the whole world.”

Ps. 32:1-6—“<> Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long. For day & night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You In a time when You may be found; Surely in a flood of great waters They shall not come near him.”

CONFIDENCE(:16b-18)

Explanation: (:16b-18)

:16—“Confess your trespasses to one another, & pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

The prayer lifted up before Almighty God in Christ, brings healing to others as well as to ourselves.

“Much strength” is put to work thru prayer. But this strength is experienced & wielded thru the “righteous.”

Strong—To be active, efficient.

“Has much force”—RWP

:17—“Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, & he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; & it did not rain on the land for three years & six months.”

An example of such actively powerful prayer is Elijah. He was a prophet used of God to turn the hearts of His people toward Him. However, Elijah was no different from any Christian. & any Christian, like Elijah, can “Pray earnestly,” & experience God’s power.

1Kgs. 17:1-7—“And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.” Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “Get away from here & turn eastward, & hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. “And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, & I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went & did according to the word of the LORD, for he went & stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread & meat in the morning, & bread & meat in the evening; & he drank from the brook. And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.”

Lk. 4:25—““But I[Jesus] tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years & six months, & there was a great famine throughout all the land;”

Jn. 14:12-14—““Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; & greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

*Jn. 15:16—““You did not choose Me, but I chose you & appointed you that you should go & bear fruit, & that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.”

*1Jn. 5:14-15—“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.”

Dehsiv is petitionary, proseuch is a word of sacred character, being limited to prayer to God, whereas dehsiv may also be used of a request addressed to man. Enteuxiv expresses confiding access to God, dehsiv gives prominence to the expression of personal need.

*“First aorist middle indicative of proseucomai & the instrumental case proseuchi (cognate substantive), after idiom for intensity in classical Greek”—RWP

“Rain”—brecw—V.—1) To moisten, wet, water; 2) To water with rain, to cause to rain, to pour the rain, to send down like rain. Strong–A primary verb; To moisten (especially by a shower):-- (send) Rain, wash.

:18—“And he prayed again, & the heaven gave rain, & the earth produced its fruit.”

As he had originally prayed, Elijah did the same after the drought had become severe. He prayed for rain & it rained heavily(1Kgs. 18:45). This rain, at the prophet’s hands gave the earth the power ot again “produce its fruit.”

1Kgs. 18:41-45—“Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat & drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” So Ahab went up to eat & drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; then he bowed down on the ground, & put his face between his knees, & said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” So he went up & looked, & said, “There is nothing.” And seven times he said, “Go again.” Then it came to pass the seventh time, that he said, “There is a cloud, as small as a man’s hand, rising out of the sea!” So he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot, & go down before the rain stops you.’” Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds & wind, & there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away & went to Jezreel.”

“Prayed”(See :13, 14, 16, 17)—proseucomai—V.—1) To offer prayers, to pray. Strong—middle voice of a primary verb; To wish; by implication, To pray to God:-- Pray, will, wish.

“Produced”—blastanw—1) To sprout, bud, put forth new leaves; 2) To produce. Strong–from blastov(a sprout); To germinate; by implication, To yield fruit:-- Bring forth, bud, spring (up). Used 4X.

Argumentation:

Mat. 6:5-15—““And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues & on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, & when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; & your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom & the power & the glory forever. Amen. For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Prov. 16:3—“Commit your works to the LORD, And your thoughts will be established.”

Obviously our works & thoughts are established thru conversation with God.

Ps. 37:4-8—“Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret--it only causes harm.”

Mat. 26:41—[Jesus said]““Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.””

Mat. 21:20-22—“And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither away so soon?” So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done. “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.””

DIRECTION & Definitive Change(:19-20)

Explanation:(:19-20)/Involvement in the Lord’s work

:19—“Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, & someone turns him back,”

“Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth,...”

We must recognize that even Christians can “wander.”

Baptists use the term ‘backslidden’ to describe this condition.

Jesus said some people allow ‘thorns’ to supplant intended growth.

Paul forever encouraging the church to work out their salvation.

“Wanders”—planaw—V.—1) To cause to stray, to lead astray, lead aside from the right way—1a) To go astray, wander, roam about; 2) metaph.—2a) To lead away from the truth, to lead into error, to deceive, 2b) To be led into error, 2c) To be led aside from the path of virtue, to go astray, sin, 2d) To sever or fall away from the truth—2d1) Of heretics, 2e) To be led away into error & sin. :20—“let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death & cover a multitude of sins.”

With such power in prayer at the hands of all Christians, it is imperative that we make every effort to “turn back” those Christians who have allowed themselves to be lead astray having “wandered” from God’s truth.

The person who concerns himself with the spiritual well-being of another, rescuing him thusly, from eternal “death,” & quite possible from a premature physical “death,”

Sinners are living in “error” & must be saved. Their ‘souls’ are at stake.

The sinner’s salvation—turning back to God—hides in Christ(from condemnation) a plethora of various sins.

*All sin is seriously dealt with only in Christ. This relationship effectively “covers”/hides all sin from God’s concern.

*Sharing our burdens & praying for one another is critical to one’s deliverance both physically & spiritually.

*When we really let go maintaining the numbers of this church body & instead truly seek God’s best in others, then God will bless the result. God wanted to see a definitive change in you...Godward, did He not? But He could not & did not bless you fully until He was allowed to bring the change. This encouragement came thru the Ministry of Restorative Prayer.

“Know”—ginwskw—1) To learn to know, come to know, get a knowledge of perceive, feel—1a) To become known; 2) To know, understand, perceive, have knowledge of—2a) To understand, 2b) To know; 3) Jewish idiom for sexual intercourse between a man & a woman; 4) To become acquainted with, to know. Ginwskw is a knowledge grounded on personal experience. Strong—To "know" (absolutely) in a great variety of applications & with many implications.

“Sinner”—amartwlov—1) Devoted to sin, a sinner—1a) Not free from sin, 1b) pre-eminently sinful, especially wicked—1b1) All wicked men, 1b2) specifically Of men stained with certain definite vices or crimes—1b2a) Tax collectors, heathen.

“Error”—planhv—N. f.—1) A wandering, a straying about—1a) One led astray from the right way, roams hither & thither; 2) metaph.—2a) Mental straying—2a1) Error, wrong opinion relative to morals or religion, 2b) Error which shows itself in action, a wrong mode of acting, 2c) Error, that which leads into error, deceit or fraud. Strong—objectively, Fraudulence; subjectively, A straying from orthodoxy or piety:-- Deceit, to deceive, delusion, error.

“Soul”—quch—1) Breath—1a) The breath of life—1a1) The vital force which animates the body & shows itself in breathing—1a1a) Of animals, 1a1b) Of men, 1b) Life, 1c) That in which there is life, 1c1) A living being, a living soul; 2) The soul—2a) The seat of the feelings, desires, affections, aversions (our heart, soul etc.), 2b) The (human) soul in so far as it is constituted that by the right use of the aids offered it by God it can attain its highest end & secure eternal blessedness, the soul regarded as a moral being designed for everlasting life, 2c) The soul as an essence which differs from the body (distinguished from other parts of the body). Strong—Breath, i.e. (by implication) Spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only.

“Death”—yanatov—

“Cover”—kaluptw—1) To hide, veil—1a) To hinder the knowledge of a thing. Strong—To cover up (literally or figuratively):-- Cover, hide.

“Multitude”—plhyov(Eng.—“plethora”)—1) A multitude—1a) A great number, of men or things, 1b) The whole number, the whole multitude, the assemblage—1b1) The multitude of the people. Strong—A fulness, i.e. A large number, throng, populace:-- bundle, company, multitude.

“Sins”—amartia—N. f.—1) equivalent to amartanw(V.)—1a) To be without a share in, 1b) To miss the mark, 1c) To err, be mistaken, 1d) To miss or wander from the path of uprightness & honor, to do or go wrong, 1e) To wander from the law of God, violate God's law, sin; 2) That which is done wrong, sin, an offence, a violation of the divine law in thought or in act; 3) Collectively, The complex or aggregate of sins committed either by a single person or by many. Amartia meant originally the missing of a mark. When applied to moral things the idea is similar, it is missing the true end of life, & so it is used as a general term for sin. It means both the act of sinning & the result, the sin itself.

Argumentation:

Mat. 28:18-20—“And Jesus came & spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven & on earth. Go therefore & make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father & of the Son & of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; & lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”

Isa. 35:3-5—“Strengthen the weak hands, And make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are fearful-hearted, “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, With the recompense of God; He will come & save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.”

1Thess. 5:11-23—“Therefore comfort each other & edify one another, just as you also are doing. And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, & are over you in the Lord & admonish you, & to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves & for all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; & may your whole spirit, soul, & body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Jude :20-25—“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh. Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory & majesty, Dominion & power, Both now & forever. Amen.”

1Pet. 4:7-10—“But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious & watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”

Jn. 17:15—““I do not pray that You should take them[disciples] out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.”
