Psalm 62
- Tonight’s is a supplement to the series on faith we've been studying
- Every time a situation arises, we can pause and take into account Him
- When we take into account what God has done, we honor His work
- We remember His sacrifice ... And we honor His works in our lives
- Read Psalm 62:1-12
- Pray
Point 1 - God is always consistent (1-4)
- Our soul can only truly find rest in who God is (Psa 3:5, “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me.”)
- It doesn't matter what issues are around us, we must seek Him out
- In all of our lives, one thing is always going to be consistent ... God!
- Note the wording of verse 2: He alone is ... (PRESENT TENSE)
- This means:
-- In none other is there found comfort and rest
-- In none other is there security in understanding His will
-- In none other is there salvation and completeness discovered
-- We must admit this at the first of each day, and at the end of each day
- The message of the cross, and that of God, is not one of convenience
- It is not meant to be flippant, but a desire to draw closer to Him always
- (v3-4) David asks something that we have all asked before:
- "How long ..." / "How long must I endure what is happening here?"
- Notice even in this confession ... it is God that brings about the trial
-- "How long will YOU assault ..."
- APP: Great comfort here in knowing that even in the bad He is there
- The end of verse 4 we see that word "Selah" again ... Think about it
- If we reflect that God is always in charge, what can harm us?
-- Isaiah 54:17 ... No weapon formed against us shall prosper
Point 2 - Rest comes from the Lord (5-8)
- Verse 5 ... See verse 1 of this same passage Verse 7... Psalm 61:3, “For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.”
- Verse 8 ... Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”
- Trust:
-- 2 Cor 1:9, “But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead”
-- Hebrews 2:13, “… And again, I will put my trust in him.”
- Trust is something that God holds sacred, and asks that we develop
- Again we see the use of the word "Selah" ... Stop and pause and reflect
- APP: No matter what the struggle is, there is always hope in the Lord
Point 3 - Set your heart on His treasures (9-12)
- David writes using scales of justice here to show measurements
- If God were to weigh all the good all the bad people; still equal
- This gives credibility to Romans 2:11 ... God is no respecter of persons - People are His creation and designed to worship Him ... Only
- In this knowledge, we must be willing to admit who we are as well
-- There is none thought of as more, or less in the Creator's eyes
- We are strongly encouraged to not let money control us (v10)
- This leads to idol worship and something we need to avoid
- It is not a matter of what we have in our pocket, vs what's in the heart
- God speaks to David quite clearly through the events of his life:
-- 1. God is strong
-- 2. God is loving
- But look at the word choice: David says that God spoke these things
- APP: Well, if David wasn't listening how would he have ever heard what God said?
- It means that David was tuned into what God was saying to learn this
- It is not something that comes from osmosis, but requires diligence
- Because of who God is, our hearts should always be tuned to Him!
-- APP: Revelation Ch 1, 2, 3 is very clear about LISTENING to God
- Ends with a warning (again scripture testifies to scripture)
- This is where it becomes paramount to understand the mission of Jesus
- The OT predicts the way ... The NT reveals Who is the way
- Each of us is rewarded by the things that we have done
1. Luke 23:41, “And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.”
2. 1 Cor 3:8, “Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.”
Conclusion
- When we listen to the voice of the Lord, we hear the direction of life
- Can we not commit to hearing a little more of what He is saying?
- Surely, there is enough being said that is not from God ...
- The challenge for believers is to silence it, and listen for His direction
- When God speaks ... The promises and rewards are spectacular IF we would call upon Him for everything
